Just wondering here. Im about to reformat my computer and thinking of giving linux a go until vista instead of buying xp now when vista is coming soon. Does it run most games on the market atm. The ones im realy interested in is EVE, Dawn of war, HL2 ect.
Also how is the performance part of the os. Are there any huge bugs or isues with it?
Last thing. I attend a LAN party every 2 months. Will it effect my ability to join games ect with everyone elce.

I think if you have to ask these questions, its not for you. I really dont know anything about it other than it requires a deep knowledge of it before you can use it.

Have your low level format disk utility handy on a floppy or you will never get a real OS back on the hard drive after installing Linux on it. Speaking 100% from experience.

I guess it shows some people who speak from experience dont have any real experience.
I used to use GRUB to select the WinOS I wanted to load... all you have to do to dump grub (or dump windows) is reset the MBR.
As for running Eve on *nix.. Is it even possible after their latest network changes?

This was true of Red Hat Linux back in the mid 90s but this computer had Linux dual-booting on it until I decided I wanted the space for other stuff. No trace of Linux now.
Granted I do get a Windows boot menu on startup asking if I want to boot one of my old broken copies of Windows or my latest reinstall but that's another issue.

In order to be able to run EVE on Linux (Or on a Mac OS, as well) you'd need a Windows emulator. Admittedly, though, I don't run Linux, so I can't say how it runs.

Up until a few weeks ago you could run eve under nix.. but i dont know about now.. The only program that can do it requires a montly sub as they have to pay MS for the dll's that common games need.
I'd really spare the hassle and just use windows ;).

Eve runs just fine in linux under Cedega. Not as fast as on windows but playable.
And you don't need a deep understanding of linux to do anything, most distros are user friendly and you just need to learn the basics for the most part.

EVE with Linux info (skip to the last page, most of that thread is outdated info by now)

You mean fdisk? Low level format is definitely not necessary.

Even better idea - grab a bootable CD image from it from the internet, burn that and play with that first.

Ubuntu is vastly easier to use than Windows by a huge margin.
Unfortunately, playing EVE on it isn't as easy. Or, better said, its really easy until CCP patches it, breaks it, and forces you to wait weeks for a Transgaming patch.

Wine is not an emulator.

It should be noted that it can be harder to set up. I blame ATI for any and all of my X related problems though. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

To sum it up: 3xxx ran awsome. 4xxx ran great but not as much as 3xxx. Latest, disaster. But they've already located the problem and are fixing it (Transgaming that is).
Predictions: expect every patch to break it and be stuck w/o EVE till Transgaming fixes it, specially now since Kali is coming up with a lot of changes.
Suggestion: dont ditch the XP partition like I have.
And that about sums it up.
