Having visited a lot of other forums, such as the ones on MMORPG.com, I have come to the conclusion that we are inferior to other MMOs, in particular Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft, because we don't have the Six Million Players (tm) that seems to be the yardstick for quality for the masses.
Let me, without further ado, propose some ways EVE can win the numbers game!
1. Make the Jovians a playable class! Er... I mean race. Yes, make them unlockable, but only after you blow up a few hundred super-elite rat spawns and loot "jovian crystals" that tell you which factions you need to grind up to 9.9. There are five total, and the last one is a secret, where the crystal tells you "the crystal remains silent."
Now, this worthy soul, after mission grinding for, say, Republic Security Services, Dai Lai, and Zoar and Sons, can "unlock" a new Jovian character slot, with uber skillz right out of the bag!
2. Instanced battlegrounds! Yeah! You wait in line for about an hour, then your ship is teleported to a "disputed space" instance. A really big flag is on either side of a deadspace zone, and the first to run the flag to the other side, wins! Or... you can opt out and disconnect, waiting for your side to have a bigger blob for a guaranteed win.
3. Raids! There's nothing more epic and heroic than gathering up 40 of your "friends" and kicking down the door of some deadspace rat, banging on it with missile and sniper spam for five minute stretches. One uber module is then dropped, which everyone can whine over.
4. Heal0rz! This is very important. Get rid of all armor repair and shield boosters and make logistics ships not only necessary, but uber! Nothing like refusing to do anything until "teh heal0r" slot is filled! And nothing like refilling the shield and armor bars of your friends while they fight stuff. Right? RIGHT?
5. Solo pwnmobiles! The oldschool gankers are right. Battleships need to be completely invulnerable to anything but another battleship, because getting the skillpoints for one entitles you to it. In fact, make "epic battleships" that require raids to aquire, that pwn regular battleships!
6. Levels! My level 41 frigate pwnz your level 39 frigate, noob!
7. Sex appeal! We need to have full-body avatars with the choice of leotards, bikinis, gravity-defying glue-on clothing and much much more to bring in the horny teenager crowd. Anime-up everyone's appearance too, so SonGoku666 can live out his wildest dreams while private convoing DrowGrrrl69.
8. Most important of all: We need an "awesome story" like World of Warcraft. Which means everyone should get a chance to kill the leader of each NPC pirate corp at least twice a day, save the galaxy three times a day, and be the "hero of the Federation" and get a cool non-tradable medal that everyone else has, too.

You forgot to add a few things!
- Bright, colorful, cheesy special effects for every module and skill used. Just HAVING the leadership skill should involve a big cartoony trumped floating over your ship, blaring a "call to arms" sound effect, every time you form a group and your bonuses get added in. Not to mention blood-drops or vampire fangs when you NOS someone, or even better, bright clouds of glowing green mist that blast everywhere when you use an armor repairer.
- "content" expansions that cost money, like in EQ!

Faction warfare ?
Well, in all seriousness and such, Faction Warfare isn't going to be instanced (so anyone, within reason, can get to the guys fighting and ruin their fight just fine) and you're not going to be killing Mentas Blaque too often (especially considering he doesn't have the physique to be flying a proper pod-ship)
... but we already kill Tarei and Estamel more than once a month, so...

Ok LoL at the post in the first place,
I do think CCP should try to involve players creating customisable content into the game, well beacuse it would just be way coool 
For example player missions created by players with rewards allready 'donated' by fellow players.

I would love to see a bounty pilot get some friend or an alt to pod them to collect the isk if that resulted in a two week delay before their 'personality' was uploaded to a new clone. |

Seriously, folks. I think the OP had a point about EVE's concept and the way it's perceived by the rest of the MMO-playing population.
The only way EVE could ever get signifigantly more people is for EVE to lose its soul.
Star Wars Galaxies tried to do just that, and look at what a mess it is now.

What would be the point of making Eve more like WoW or similar? Why not just make all MMORPG's exactly the same? 
Granted, Eve may only have 30K users active, but how many of Wow's 6 Million or so are actually still playing. How long has Wow been running compared to Eve too?
And stick on clothing for GAME characters? Man, You got issues
