Having visited a lot of other forums, such as the ones on MMORPG.com, I have come to the conclusion that we are inferior to other MMOs, in particular Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft, because we don't have the Six Million Players (tm) that seems to be the yardstick for quality for the masses.
Let me, without further ado, propose some ways EVE can win the numbers game!
1. Make the Jovians a playable class! Er... I mean race. Yes, make them unlockable, but only after you blow up a few hundred super-elite rat spawns and loot "jovian crystals" that tell you which factions you need to grind up to 9.9. There are five total, and the last one is a secret, where the crystal tells you "the crystal remains silent."
Now, this worthy soul, after mission grinding for, say, Republic Security Services, Dai Lai, and Zoar and Sons, can "unlock" a new Jovian character slot, with uber skillz right out of the bag!
2. Instanced battlegrounds! Yeah! You wait in line for about an hour, then your ship is teleported to a "disputed space" instance. A really big flag is on either side of a deadspace zone, and the first to run the flag to the other side, wins! Or... you can opt out and disconnect, waiting for your side to have a bigger blob for a guaranteed win.
3. Raids! There's nothing more epic and heroic than gathering up 40 of your "friends" and kicking down the door of some deadspace rat, banging on it with missile and sniper spam for five minute stretches. One uber module is then dropped, which everyone can whine over.
4. Heal0rz! This is very important. Get rid of all armor repair and shield boosters and make logistics ships not only necessary, but uber! Nothing like refusing to do anything until "teh heal0r" slot is filled! And nothing like refilling the shield and armor bars of your friends while they fight stuff. Right? RIGHT?
5. Solo pwnmobiles! The oldschool gankers are right. Battleships need to be completely invulnerable to anything but another battleship, because getting the skillpoints for one entitles you to it. In fact, make "epic battleships" that require raids to aquire, that pwn regular battleships!
6. Levels! My level 41 frigate pwnz your level 39 frigate, noob!
7. Sex appeal! We need to have full-body avatars with the choice of leotards, bikinis, gravity-defying glue-on clothing and much much more to bring in the horny teenager crowd. Anime-up everyone's appearance too, so SonGoku666 can live out his wildest dreams while private convoing DrowGrrrl69.
8. Most important of all: We need an "awesome story" like World of Warcraft. Which means everyone should get a chance to kill the leader of each NPC pirate corp at least twice a day, save the galaxy three times a day, and be the "hero of the Federation" and get a cool non-tradable medal that everyone else has, too.

You forgot to add a few things!
- Bright, colorful, cheesy special effects for every module and skill used. Just HAVING the leadership skill should involve a big cartoony trumped floating over your ship, blaring a "call to arms" sound effect, every time you form a group and your bonuses get added in. Not to mention blood-drops or vampire fangs when you NOS someone, or even better, bright clouds of glowing green mist that blast everywhere when you use an armor repairer.
- "content" expansions that cost money, like in EQ!

Well, in all seriousness and such, Faction Warfare isn't going to be instanced (so anyone, within reason, can get to the guys fighting and ruin their fight just fine) and you're not going to be killing Mentas Blaque too often (especially considering he doesn't have the physique to be flying a proper pod-ship)
... but we already kill Tarei and Estamel more than once a month, so...

Ok LoL at the post in the first place,
I do think CCP should try to involve players creating customisable content into the game, well beacuse it would just be way coool 
For example player missions created by players with rewards allready 'donated' by fellow players.

Seriously, folks. I think the OP had a point about EVE's concept and the way it's perceived by the rest of the MMO-playing population.
The only way EVE could ever get signifigantly more people is for EVE to lose its soul.
Star Wars Galaxies tried to do just that, and look at what a mess it is now.

Granted, Eve may only have 30K users active, but how many of Wow's 6 Million or so are actually still playing. How long has Wow been running compared to Eve too?
And stick on clothing for GAME characters? Man, You got issues

1.2. make skilling Jovian require running missions repeatly while very time you use a jovian module or ship your sec status drops a bit and a few 100k are added to your player bounty and you are attackable everywhere w/o concord protection.
1.3. when reaching -5 you show up on the map
1.4. no clones for jovian characters
9. customizable ships (yay - pink apocs!)

If somebody attacks you with a full T2 setup they drop 50 ISK when killed but killing them increases your standing with someone you really couldn't care less about.

People return to Eve because it's a proper game. The rest seem to be fun for a while whilst Eve maintains it's integrity.

You forgot the necromancer skill and module. With this module you will be able to reanimate corpses who will follow you into the battle. And you can buy better ships for them. With necromancy V you will able to control 5 souls.

Hey, don't just chuckle at my populist notions. Add to them!
Here, to get you started:
Let's impose "no fire" zones where you can't target anyone! You can fly up to an NPC "Priest of Discord" flying an Apoc and turn on your "pvp" flag by giving him the copy of the Pax Gankjooia you start play with. No one really does this for any rational reason, but sometimes CONCORD glitches and gets into fights with the PoD. The battles are hilarious, and super laggy to boot! Whoooo!
To further promote the "iconic" nature of EVE, everyone will be able to play a Jovian right off the bat! Yeah, they'll be just as crappy as any other starting character (at first) but then be given built in, penalty-free, MWDs that cost almost nothing to activate because they are a "point blank" class of ships, or something! Nothing like Ipwnzjoo the iconic Jovian running away from every fight he can't win (which isnt many)!
When the game starts, we should replace Aura with the leader of whatever faction you started off in, who tells you that you are the last hope for the EVE cluster, and tells you to blow up some rats in velators in a top secret mission that, erm... damn. I think I just had a stroke writing this!

I'll admit that I've seen a lot of evidence to support this claim.
I have spent months in the noobcorp, and in the channel, along with the usual "HOW DO I SHOT LASER" kind of nonsense from WoW kiddies, there's almost always someone to say "this game sux omg" and who apparently picks up free trial accounts just to be a rabble rouser.
Mind you, I've tried to get some reasons out of the doomsayer, but all that's ever said is "6 mil peeple play wow lol nuf sed"

I can't beilive no one's mentioned this yet!
Since EvE's skill system can be way too unfair, all skills and skillpoints put into something other than your race's ships should be refunded and not allowed to train ever again!
And since everyone knows what they want from the beginning, you should have to choose all of the skills you'll ever train right from the beginning, and become unable to train any others, unless you make a new character.
OR
We could just have trainer agents located throughout the galaxy, where you can talk to them, and they'll refund all of your skillpoints for a few hundred k isk, and you can redistribute all skillpoints to any skill! Be careful though, each time you do this the cost doubles!
Plus, loosing a ship is just too painful! Your ship shouldn't blow up, just break down! When you eject, you go to the nearest 'pod-point', and just fly back to your ship. You'll be as good as new! No one will take anything of yours!

Hey hey hold on a minute! I joined this game 13 years old and back then I already laughed at stupid games like WoW (aka, Teletubies)! Not all kids are idiots.
PS: The only thing this game needs is 10 times bigger bounties on rats so I can PvP more often

Just because someone plays world of warcraft there is no need to call them an idiot......
Having said that, there are some idiots at work who play WoW and talk about it ALL DAY LONG...
EVE is different to most other MMO's (different, not better, not worse)which is why I gave it a second chance (and I'm sooooo glad I did )
Anyway, I keep asking on Global chat, but who here can pl me? because I want to play the uber Jovian class and I need to be lvl 250.....pl me pls !!11!!!

hmmm...Dunno about WoW, but since i did play Lineage 2 i propose to have floating castles and remove space stations. We get a bunch of legendary dragons that take 300+ people to take down and give u a bunch of crazy modules (plz put in cat ears to put on ur ships in place of guns.....). Make isk soo very hard to get that 90% of the community will resort to botting/ebay. This would make the game appeal to all koreans thus giving this game 7m suscribers.

i kinda like this idea ... in addition we should be able to jump outa our pods armed with hefty axe/sword/spear/club and beat the hell outa our opponent
and plx add big complex bosses that we're going to try to kill for days and weeks and when we finally kill it ... it will drop fcking nothing

We need to anime the hell out of everything! Because if it's made in Japan, it's automatically cool! And deep, and profound, and... oh jeez, I can feel my hygene deteriorating just by typing this.
Well, if we added in Earth and Beyond's "Tada-O" that wouldn't be too bad.
But yeah, just imagine if we anime'd the hell out of everything. Hell, we already got a quasi-religious name for the game. We got "Angels" and the Amarr are full of theological gobbledy****. Just distort the word placement and bingo! You got "deep profound Anime names!"
Like maybe we could have "Pious Deity Seraphim Requiem Devices" that spit out retarded-looking circular rings around our ships, lined with random Hebrew and Aramaic letters.
Make everyone look more metrosexual! Even the Gallente... if that's possible!
Put in potions! You can't have the asian gaming experience without "pots" to pop every five seconds in PVP.

You forgot a couple things though!
- Make pilots able to get off ships and walk through stations or planets, otherwise we wouldn't be able to see them running while bending their torsos 90¦ forward...
- IMMEDIATLY include the possibility of creating characters that look like 12y/o girls in japanese school uniforms. We need to break the 30k user barrier, and pervs would flock to this one.
- FIND THE WAY of including swords that look 4-tons heavy but can be wielded with the grace you would a straw...
- We URGENTLY need the character creation process to be modified in order to include shoulderpads sporting foot-long spikes that would impale your head should you choose to tilt it.

Have five instances of every rat faction's leader running at the same time, while everyone gets a chance at the daily "saving the galaxy from DOOOOOOM" in place of those irritating nuances of realistic person-to-person politics we got now.

Ooh no, it's another 'Damn, 6 million people like a game based on a ruleset that's been around longer than most of us have lived so let's just call them idiots, smell our own farts, and act like we're all so much smarter than them.' thread.
Maybe we could get more people in eve if half of the current population stopped being so self proclaimed l33t ('cause you sure talk like elitist, ya know), and stopped calling the population off a small country (6 million is a lot) idiots, f*ckt*rds or d-bags to feel superior.
Maybe we can't get more people in eve because your ego's are taking up all available space in the continuum (on noes, Star Trek reference, I must be an idiot, f*ckt...see above).

The OP made me grin because it made fun of some of the worst things I've seen in other games.
I think some of the replys since have been straying into the very territory that they try and complain about.
Meself, I think my opinion of WoW can be summed up in a cliche "Its a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there".

All of you forgot that for reaching 6M we need to fix PVP asap, no looting, no podding, no ship pop, but you can get honor points (honor points rule), which you can exchange for a non-tradeable fancy module.
