[boring part]
I'm a returning EVE player. I've played the game for perhaps a little less than a month in total - some time during the beta and perhaps 1 year after release for ~3 weeks. It never hooked me for some reason, and the fact that WoW (I know, everyone hates WoW here, but read on :)) was in beta/released slightly later put an end to a rather short-lived EVE career there, which I spent primarily doing missions and small-time mining (perhaps that's where I went wrong).
Now, WoW is boring me and I decided to give EVE another chance. My old account was rubbish so I figured I'd start over and registrered for this 14 day trial account. I did so much missioning and mining last time I played and that apparently didn't really cater to who I am. So I figured "heck, why not try pirating?" - I was a Minmatar last time around and had dabbled somewhat with Gallente ships, and Caldari missile-boats really are not my cup of tea, so I went with Amarr this time around since I had read some good things about a Punisher.
Now, my account is approx. 11-12 days old and I've been around the block. The first couple of days I used to train the necessary skills for the Punisher 'Bleeder' setup (thank you Malka Badi'a) that I had been reading about on the Ships & Modules forum. It seemed very "newbie-friendly". I was able to fit my Punisher with a little help from fiends and from a module that I had picked off from a random rat in 0.7 space that was worth ~1million (talk about luck). Had a few run-ins with different miners and other new players such as myself, had a few kills and also lost 2 Punishers in the process. Nothing amazing had happened, and while I had fun I just wasn't...hooked!
Untill one day, when the fight which I would compare every future fight to began. I was merrily strolling about in Istodard, warped to the southern-most planet surrounded by a dozen or so belts and did a 360 degree scan (the stickied Scanner guide is SO AWESOME <3). A few ships popped onto my scanner, one of which particurarly caught my interest. A Caracal. Ever since watching a Punisher movie ( http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0606/punisherhiq.avi ) that I found from searching on http://www.eve-files.com a while back when I started this trial account, I have dreamed of one time taking on a Caracal solo. And while a friend of mine that I was chatting to certainly thought it was insane of me to even THINK about beating it, I still went for it.

Edited by: Intigo on 12/09/2006 15:54:34 I narrowed down the Caracal to one belt by lowering the degree setting on my scanner (once again, thanks for that awesome Scanner guide) and warped in . I was 30km off and the Caracal had apparently just mopped up the last of the rats in the belt and was moving to the last Cargo Container. I turned on my AB and approached, my adrenaline already rising as I knew this fight would by no means be a pushover.
I got within 10km (to not rise suspicion too soon) and locked on, immediately scrambling him and engaging my guns + NOS as I got within 5km, engaging orbit at 1km. At first he didn't fight back, but he quickly regained his senses and webbed me and shot back. I was pretty much losing hope there already as the first 1 and a half volley from his missiles took out my entire shield! Not only was he dealing massive damage, I was apparently completely unable to dent his tank! He was sitting comfortably at 75% Shield with his Shield Booster running as I was unloading my measly 200mm ACs on him (1 named 'Scout' one, and 2 of those uhh.. semi-named ones that are better than the standard one - this was my 3rd fitted Punisher, and since I got 3mill from ransoming a miner's pod a few days earlier I thought I might as well put some money into it this time :)) and my 1 Nos.
I carefully rethought my strategy and with adrenaline surging through my body I turned on my T2 (only piece of T2 I have, so easy to train for) Armor Repper. I figured I would need to outlast him as there was no way I could dent his tank or last much longer cap-wise with AB + scrambler on. I turned off my AB as I was already going 80m/s or something from his web and figured going a little slower wouldn't hurt me. I also disengaged my scrambler as I guessed he wasn't going to warp out now when it was clear that I was losing.
So I was a sitting duck. It did not seem I was able to outtank his damage, atleast not by a lot. And while I do have 2 Cap Relays fitted, my Armor Repper was still draining my cap slowly but steadily. It looked bleak and I was losing hope steadily...untill for one moment I realised he had turned off his web! Just a little glimmer of hope appeared in front me and I realised that perhaps he was having cap trouble?! Without much regard to why he did this I immediately turned my AB back on and orbited him at 1km, going 500+ m/s and taking considerably less damage. And just then, my suspicion was confirmed. Not only was his web turned off, he had also stopped shield boosting! I was sitting at 20% armor and very low cap, but the fight was suddenly turning in my favor! As I realised this I immediately turned my scrambler back on to make sure that he wouldn't be making a run for it. Then it was just a matter of time and *POP* his Caracal was history - Woot! (it took me 3 tries to find Print Screen during the fight, I was bloody shaking). I was still trembling as I slowly attempted to lock his pod and convo'd in order to ransom (I am a pirate after all). I stated my demands (2mill for his pod) and was greeted with (warning - profanity): Loot + smack I chuckled to myself and unlocked him and scooped up all the loot I could carry (had to dump all my ammo). I wasn't really ready to take the sec loss from a Pod kill, and not even smacktalk such as that was able to get me off my "Cloud Nine". :D
I sold the loot from his Caracal for ~4 mill later on which was more than double of what I had in the first place, so that was quite the boost as well. I could still feel my adrenaline surging for the rest of that day. :)
I am hooked. There's no way out of it now, I just need to dig up some cash somewhere so I can keep this account activated. I'm somewhat strapped for cash IRL lately, but with some luck I might be able to pay for the 2nd month by buying a GTC with ingame ISK, if I'm able to scrounge up enough. ^^
Please do stop by and say hi in Molden Health!

nice story. Makes me ponder going ratting in a nearby system. I went out with a T1 non named fitted rifter. Lost i because I wanted too. PC ganged me so I could help them and they used the 'good spawn here' tactic. Typical. But I felt like a challenge and I was bored so warped in. Haha, boom. They tried to ransom me, but the moment I said 'no implants mate' they left the convo and podded me. XD

My mentor and eternal guiding star - the pirate of all pirates! One of the people who really helped me by teaching me the basics and letting me hunt with him for a while. I will be his suicide tackler any time. :D
Also, much <3 to teq, rawr and the rest of the crew in #eve-online on QuakeNet, lots of useful advice there.
This post was primarily made to show that you can actually pirate quite efficiently as a low SP character in a Frigate, and also to just share the best EVE experience I've had so far and what really has permanently hooked me on this game I think.
From what I've gathered, posting directly to killmails is not accepted on this forum, but you can follow my progress (and see my losses) on a killboard that a friend of mine let me use at http://nova.pingtimeout.net/kb/
I hope my story will inspire other low SP pirates to give it a go. There's (almost) nothing to lose and everything to gain. :)

The first link in that thread has a guide on using the scanner. Was also another scanner guide somewhere on these forums that I read.
Maybe Eve-Search has it. :)

this just goes to show that there's no reason a low SP character cant PVP. i remember i went out only a few days after this char was made, made a gang with some ppl in the starting school and went out roaming through low-sec with a t1 frig/dessie gang :) we all enjoyed ourselves lots and though it was only a glimpse of pvp (some of them lost their ships, but kills were made) it made them want more and as a result most of them now have full subscriptions to EVE, where the average trail accounter does a few missions and trains some skills by the time their trial is up, experiencing essentially NOTHING of EVE and not really enthusiastic about continuing :S

Frank, yeah, he was NOS'd since we started the fight. The guy wasn't the smartest, he could have moved out of gun + NOS range when he had me webbed if he tried.

Hrm... the first couple of kills I had were pretty easy. A few inexperienced Frigate pilots such as myself and a Prophecy mining solo with mining drones.
I think in the course of my "current pirate career" I've had 150-275k SP.
The Caracal kill was approx. 250k SP. Also, Asteroide (the victim) was only ~20 days old. He did have some nice named loot for a new char though.
Thanks for the comments so far. More yarrr to come soon! Perhaps once I fix my PC I'll be able to Fraps a bit too.

Great read.
I'm starting to think that the Caracal is the cruiser of choice for people who suck at PvP. I've yet to fight one that didn't just crumple the moment I jumped on and opened up a can of nasty.

He probably did most of his damage to you, and drained most of his capacitor, with the smart bomb, unless he got that from loot and it just happened to be in his hold.
Just FYI: missile launchers use no cap so it is sometimes not terribly effective to NOS, depending on how they are tanked.
I started getting an adrenaline rush just reading your story. Good memories floated to the surface.

Good job! That Caracal Pilot must have been a newb. How shamefull to lose a fight he should have won.

No need to be so hostile. I'm usually around Rens the majority of the time, as I generally pirate in the Molden Health region. If you want a 1on1 when I finish training for T2 guns, I'd be all for it. I'd most likely lose as I'm still at around 400k SPs total, but it'd be a learning lesson never the less. Feel free to eve-mail me.
murder one, glad to see you enjoyed it. Your stories and threads here on the forum are a great source of both entertainment and valid advice on pirating. You're an inspiration to many new pirates such as myself, I bet. :)
Majin82, yeah, I don't plan on leaving my Punisher just yet. After I finish this T2 guns training I'm switching over to Minny cruisers - Rupture just looks too sexy to pass up. Can't wait to try it out.

I have the same feeling. Once i undocked in a Manticore in a low sec system when i was an outlaw and one caracal attacked me. In two volley he was down to half hull and i was tanking him. He had to warp out embarassingly. It left my mouth open. Later that day i killed a caracal in my manticore.
I really enjoyed your story btw. Post more. Do more pirating. Have fun.

An update!
Been a bit busy with work lately and training for T2 guns (which I can use now, YAY!), but I am officially back in action once again - rawr. <o/ Slightly modified my setup too, nothing drastic though (fitted a membrane to replace a cap relay as my cap skills increased).
And what a great return it has been so far - another Cruiser kill, and my God it was a thriller.
I was running about in Half, looking for a fight as I usually am. I do a 360 scan from the bottom planet surrounded by 12 or so belts and among the ships I find a Bellicose. I immediately light up since from what I've been told these are gimp! I narrow it down to one belt and warp in, already feeling the same rush of battle as I had when fighting the Caracal.
I warp in 45km off the Cruiser and curse silently to myself, as I've seen way too many Mining Barges or other targets warp off when I warp in at this range. But he seems to be too busy finishing off the last rat in the belt to notice me, so I approach with AB (T2 too, I have phat loot!), making sure to add the drones fighting the rats to my overview as I approach so I can target the damn things when the fights begins.
Even though I've been told that Bellicose is gimp, it sure did dish out quite the hurt. Outdamaged the Caracal (who was using Heavy Missiles, granted) by a fair amount. Target Painter + Drones = ouch. D:
I engage and immediately dump my NOS + scrambler on Bellicose, target a drone and unleash hell with my new T2 guns, weee! The thing goes down fairly fast, but so do I due to the fairly impressive DPS that the Bellicose was doing. I take out the first drone, but I'm already at 75% armor! Fortunately, the DPS taken is severely lowered for every drone I kill, so I continue relentlessly while cursing quite loudly at the fact that Punisher only has 2 Max targets (and most of the cursing is pointed at myself for not training the skill that lets me have more targets locked earlier, but I wantd my T2 guns ). As I take out the last drone I'm down to 20% armor and my cap is severely drained (I've been turning scrambler on/off a bit during the fight, but I didn't want to risk my target warping off), but I can finally start doing damage to the Bellicose.
At this point I also notice that he has been asking for help in Local, even pointing to the location of our fighting! I immediate begin scouting Local while orbiting the Bellicose at 1km, doing my best to tank the lowered (but still enough to keep me below 50% armor constantly with repper going in phases) DPS he's outputting. In Local I notice another person from his corp called IshmaelDS and realise that I am now fighting against time! I need to get this Bellicose down before his help warps in or I'm as good as dead!
The fight progresses slowly - while it's clear that I'm winning now that his drones are out of the way, I still don't have enough of an upper hand to turn off my repper, constantly below 50% armor. As he finally enters hull, I dread as IshmaelDS turns up on Overview. From the Overview [] I notice he's flying a Battleship and I decide to take my chances and finish off the Cruiser (since he has slow locking, I figured). As the hull on the Bellicose keeps going lower, I slowly start to align for warp to a nearby belt.
50% hull, I'm silently praying the Battleship pilot is either sleeping or just locking slowly. 25% hull, at this point I'm pretty much yelling at my screen for the Bellicose to die, as the first couple of hits from the Battleship starts hitting my ship. Just as the Bellicose pops I am knocked down to 10% armor once again, after being up over 50% for a good portion of the last part of the fight. I immediately warp out, shedding a tear as I leave the loot behind. As I write "gf" in Local I also thank the Gods above for the Battleship not having a scrambler fitted.
Phew - that was quite a fight. Once again, my love for this game has been established.
Come see me in the Molden Health region! <3
