I was actually trying to create an idea involving a new care-bear profession (of the sorts) that didn't involve sitting in one spot and just sucking in isk (mining).
Whales would be rare, would be more valuable in lower security, and could only be approached by whaling ships. As to how you get the value off the whale is still up for grabs but one thing is for sure - You would actually have to HUNT for them. It could be tied into the new exploration concept being expanded by CCP.
I'm sick and tired of Going DIRECTLY to an asteroid belt and taking Ore. Or going DIRECTLY to an asteroid belt and belt ratting stupid NPC's. Or going DIRECTLY to a complex and doing the complex.
MAKE US FIND OUR MONEY!!! I want the hunt! It's already lame enough with players docking up whenever a hostile comes in system or outright jumping safe spots continuously - or worse yet, logging off =P
The hunt needs to be expanded in some way and space whales are a creative entity that could provide an awesome profession. So awesome that it would attract people to the game. "You can even be a space whaler!!!" ---

That would actually be quite cool if the new scanning system is any good. You'd really have to hunt. And imagine how much HP a whale would habe. 100% immunity to all damage types except harpoons.
Fun!
I think the PvP'er in me just died.

My only solutions to forcing people into "whaling ships" would be the following:
You must capture the whale ALIVE (only the whaling ship can do such a thing) Or space whales can sense certain stuff in ships so the space whales were manufactured with special stuff so they could approach (within 500km) a spacewhale.
Could you imagine flyin around in 0.0 looking for "the big one"? There would be a ton of risk involved in doing that - especially if space whales could fight back. ---

Back in the days... Starglider 2 from 1988
Starglider 2
It had space whales, they were mechanical ("Egron Mechanical Whales"), and could be found around the big gas giant, gliding gracefully through space in small herds, singing their whale song. And you could shoot them, but you didn't want to, of course.

I'd have shot them. Frickin' carebears.

The idea would go over much better if they were space sharks you hunted for a resource.
Killing harmless whales bothers people.
Killing sharks that would prey on defensless miners given the chance, though bothers almost no one.
Wherever you went - here you are.

Isn't this called 'Piracy'?
Hrm, actually, no. In Lowsec it's piracy, in 0.0 it's politics.
