So, my courage is slowly gathering. I finally feel like I have enough cash flow to want to move 0.0 space and risk loosing my ship. I want to rat in low sec space (.3 to .1 maybe .0 if I can manage it).
What is a good set up to survive PC pirates / gankers (****ers?)? I know the set up needs to be a balance between performance and survivability. My set up question is for a Ferox (my ship of choice and what I wish to specialize in for a wee while).
In my high slots, I have 5 missiles, but I have two slots I can fit anything. For pvp these would be med-Nos but I more or less plan on running and not fighting (leaving a yellow trail behind, no shame in thatą..) ū what can I place in those 2 hi slots that allows me to live?
In the low slots I would like to have some PDUs but I know having 1 or 2 or even 3 warp stabilizers (what is the best one, is it worth to have named? I am assuming yes) might be the better set up. As for my 5 mid slots ū I am not sure and open to suggestions. Is it similar to mission running (mixture of extenders, boosters, hardners).
Overall, what allows me to rat and then make a run for it when jumpedą.hehehehe

0.5 to 1.0 safe 0.1 to 0.4 DANGEROUS 0.0 SAFE(except the choke points, deep 0.0 is way safer than low sec.)
if you don't believe me look in your MAP and tell it to be set to current active players or total number of jumps or poddings

i dont know specifically for the ferox but a typical low sec solo ratter setup for tanking would be passive, so if you armor tanked you would get adaptive nano membranes (named of course) stick three on and your resistances will all be in the 50-60% range, plus passive setups dont use cap and i think they have less requirements, but that is for armor tanking. for shield tanking go with a passive adaptive shield tank(if that exists) i would guess but i could be wrong, warp core stabs are pointless really as they inhibit your ability to tank/ fit damage mods, a solo pirate will typically fit a 2 point scram anyhow, and be in a ship that gets close to you really fast, so even with a stab on you wouldnt get away, so dont fit a stab.
trouble in low sec is a lot of ratters fit active tanks, so if they were fighting sansha rats they would have em and thermic hardeners on, most pirates will therefore fit to damage the kinetic and explosive weakness, you have an adaptive tank on then you have no main weakness. missions pvp skills

You probably know it already, but much more important than the way you set up your ship is watching and getting to know local, having instas and safes, and using your scanner. So what I did was basically set up my ship for NPCing, and let my brain take care of keeping out of the pirates' way.
I might give more weight to webbers and NOS than I normally would, but those are useful for NPCing too. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Edited by: Csilkk on 13/09/2006 16:18:14 Ferox would use passive or active shield set ups.
how does a passive set up work with addaptive shield? what mods are those? Invul Field (with general resists?)
Ty for the resposne your always good for it bates...
Tsane - thats what iwas thinking - a PVP set up for ratting in low sec space is what I might need and playing the game safe as best I can - just wondering if those set ups for pvp are adjustable for purly running....hehehehe

i am ? lol i dont remember who ive responded too hehe. however i dont exactly know if there is a passive adaptive tank for shields, as i fly ammar, but if there is i would suggest that is what you use , however before commiting the ferox to low sec, try ratting in a cruiser/frigate, sounds tough but it makes battles more interesting and if a pirate jumps you its between 500k and 10 mill loss as opposed to 25 mill loss missions pvp skills

I don't fly Caldari really, but I'd be amazed if named T1 gear didn't work just fine for you PvE. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Any decent cruiser setup will be fine for .1 and up. No T2 is needed. The named warp stabs don't give you more resistance to warp jamming. They just use less CPU. A scram does 2 points lock, so it is good to have two if it doesn't gimp your setup. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find the right setup for the right situation. I've found a few instances where the convential wisdom presented on the forms has been flat wrong in practice. Instas, safes, and a close eye on local are more important then ship fitting.

Yes they are; I just like to load up on shield extenders and invulns like one of the above posters suggested. Works fine for me.

in low sec :
1/ open your map and select "jump per hour" stat , find a low sec system where you have very few jumps per hour, ideally a dead end system with a station not too far but not in the system .
its an important point, because if you PvE on a frequented system, you are always going to see people coming in local and you will not know if htey just go through or looking for targets. In a dead end system, you eliminate this risk, people who jump in have a good reason to be there.
2/ have local open all the time and check sec status and corp of they guy who enter. Generally if you re alone , 1 guy enter and want to talk, you have big chance he is not here to try to kill you, he is just trying to assess the situation. on the other way, try to be as quiet as possible till they have you scrambled.
3/ create safespot in the system before to begin to npc
You can avoid a lot of stress by finding a nice and quiet little spot, once you found a system with very low jump/hour, check on this site how many asteroids belts the system have. If it have enough, move your stuff there and enjoy, also create a few instas from your system to the nearest station where you can unload the loot and process it.
After a while, you will know the locals and you will learn which corp you should watch for.
Regarding the ship, ferox is good since you can do all types of damage so you re not restricted to an area , and also it have a very decent tank . train your dones skills ( drones 5) and you can put 5 drones in your drones bay, they will take care of the frigates while you focus on the bigger fish.
With another char, i used to npc in low sec ( up to 0,1 ) with a punisher, its a nice little frig with good tank and if you have decent gunnery skills, yo can kill all the ships in low sec without too much trouble. The only problem is that amar ship do only EM and thermal so you are restricted to regions where npc have low em and thermal resist. On the other way, advantage of amar is that yo dont use ammos, which very important if you ninja npc in someone else territory ( i speak about 0,0).
Anywa, ferox will be good for low sec , just be smart and keep an eye on local , you wont die .
If i was you , i would stick to low sec before to adventure into 0,0. its another story there. Entry points are generally camped, you need to find the right time and lcoation to get through these choke points , also you have the logistics to take into account (unless you use amar ships ): you will need sooner or later to bring ammo. That means that you have to get not only your npcing ship but also another ship who have good cargo capacity to drop a secure container full of ammos . You can use a hauler or a gallente cruiser like the exequror who have good cargo space.

to address this point - there will always be times when someone gets closer than you'd like and having NOS's in your slots would allow you to drain their cap and potentially cause them to have to retreat or even lose the battle - think of them like a bayonet on a rifle - you intend to run, smart choice, but if your options are limited, it's nice to have a little something in reserve for when the bad-guys are on top of you.
good luck (and like someone else said, parts of 0.0 are generally safer than low-sec, but getting there - and getting out again - can be a pain)

5x Heavy missile launchers. 1 med nos, one tractor beam.
active rat specific tank ( with large booster ). Since missiles dont use any cap, you can tank really well.
Low... Warp core stabilizers if you're in a populated area... things that gives your inertia a boost is also good ( makes you warp away faster )
Most important... make safes, instas, and all of that... and keep an eye on local. It has worked fine for me so far.
Works for both 0.1-0.5 and 0.0...

The biggest problem you will have is 00 choke points.
My advice, create a throwaway alt and take a trip down to 00 to see if choke points are camped.

The thing with 0.0 is as soon as anyone spot you, they will hunt you down.
As for ferox setup (pve)
I used to use this in 0.0:
hi: 5x heavies 1x blaster 1x tractor beam. (blaster for extra dps on 500k-1m rats)
med: 3x Large Named Shield Extenders 1x Rat specific shield resistance 1x named ab (depends on playing style might skip this)
low:
1x Ballistic control 2x Shield power relay 1x Warp core stab / another ballistic
Basicly thats my pve and pve only setup. I would prob change blaster for med nos, but fiting that can be har I think. low: 2x Shield power relay ----
