Hi, this is the average price of interceptors at Jita today, sorted from highest to lowest...
1. Crow (Caldari) 21.0m Price going up 2. Taranis (Gallente) 13.2m 3. Crusader (Amarr) 9.4m 4. Malediction (Amarr) 8.0m 5. Claw (Minmatar) 7.5m Price going up 6. Stiletto (Minmatar) 6.8m 7. Raptor(Caldari) 6.1m Price going down 8. Ares (Gallente) 5.2m Price going down
My main question is, what's wrong with the Ares?
And if the Stiletto is preferred by pilots, then I think it's undervalued a bit.

You need 2 MAPCs to fit a decent setup on the Ares, which is a long range setup (rails + light missiles). For short range tackling the ship is missing a 3rd med slot. The ship either needs more grid or a 3rd med slot, since the taranis is already short range my vote is for "grid".
Also I'm suprised Crudaser and Malediction are more expensive than Claw and Stiletto...

1. Very low powergrid. 2. Rather low top speed. 3. Too few mid slots to tackle. 4. Split weapon layout means severely decreased efficiency on damage mods. 5. Bonuses are spread out over several weapon systems. (below is RP/aesthetic stuff) 6. Roden Shipyards philosophy is unfocused and unspecialized - this is not how T2 ships are supposed to be. 7. Roden Shipyards design is highly un-Gallentean, realistically the Gallente Navy or President's beaureu would not commission any contract deals for these ships after reviewing them. 8. Roden Shipyards' own testing should have put the ship back on the drawing table. - Three years old |

Seriously, you can look at posts on this all day and think 'Can't be that bad' (i did). Then try and get in one and try and fit any kind of decent setup.

QFT.
If it actually had the grid to fit decent weapons it might be ok. But you need one or even two MAPCs to do anything with this piece of junk.
If the grid was incresed so that normal setups don't absolutely require a MAPC, this ship might be useful. As is, it's in the same junk pile as the Nemesis, for the same reason.

Only good thing with ares is price and ... luckily it's so crappy that most people underestimate you if you happen to fly one. Most inty pilots are pure crap and crow sorts the problem for them.
But in short, taranis and crow are expensive coz they can kill stuff and have 3 medslots. Crusader & claw can kill stuff well but have 2 meds and you either don't web or don't scramble(or don't mwd) and it's like cutting 50% of performance of crow/taranis before you undock. --------------------- Looking for frentix? What is the Ares?..
Atron Hull - 21,000 ISK Red Paint Job - 4,000,000 ISK Pointy Irrelevant Things - 1,000,000 ISK
An overpriced shuttle! Its major flaw for pvp is two fold however..
1. You can't fit anything worth fitting. Think electrons or 75mm gatlings. 2. It tries to be the "support" variant, exchanging firepower for tackle power.. but the Taranis is better at both.

my advise would be :
step 1: buy an ares step 2: try to fit an ares step 3: bash your head of table as you cant fit anything step 4: pass out step 5: sell ares
after that you will understand the price

Still i didnt lose that many 1 vs 1 with my ares
Allthough one time i screwed up and lost it vs a taranis, pretty stupid.
One of the guys i also couldnt handle was a crow that went 6 km/s with normal missiles and 4.7 with precision that hit for 89 damage each...
I didnt die, crow did way to much 30k flybyes for that but still. _________________________________________________

I love my Ares, very good fast T2 shuttle, nearly uncatchable, can be used as (low) sec small mission runner, nowadays for lev 4 courier missions worth it. But anything else... no

I always figured the 'Ranis would be the speedy tackler and the Ares would be the damage dealer. But thanks to no PG upgrade when missile bay PG reqs were upped, all I can get on are 75mm gatling rails and rocket launchers.
The problem with the Ares is when you compare it to the Taranis. The disparity between the two is immense and that, I think, is also a bit of a perception problem. The Taranis is easily the 2nd best (some argue THE best) interceptor in the game. it's hard for the others to compete.
I actually really like my Ares, and I can get some very nice results out of it in both PvP and PvE. But oh for a little extra grid so it can be fitted better... and how abuot a little role balancing? It's clearly not the tackler so how about upping the combat output? This may mean the Taranis gets nuked a bit but with the extra mid and the stats it has, it's better suited for tackling anyway.
Just my 2p.

Taranis is the be all and end all of short range 'ceptor fights. I'd proberbly actually use the Ares if i could fit standards and 125 or 150 rails without gimping all my lows.

It can't even fit electrons and rockets with a decent setup. Its terrible and should be removed from the game, because no matter what you do, the taranis will be better. Its the tackler and the damage dealer.

"What is wrong with the Ares?" people say. I would rather say: what is wrong with people that can't use it for what it does best? That is hunting frigs, fighting other ceptors.
I recently had a 1 vs 1 against a arty claw and I come out on top with 15% struchture left. As the fight begun and we both scramed each other it was a fight to the end. I tought I would lose as my armor dropped faster then his. But thanks to the extra lowslott and a damage controll in it (50% to hull) I survived. The Ares has more structure then shield and armor so fitting a DC is always a good idea.
As for my skills they are nearly maxed for ceptor and the tech 2 125mm rails I used, but my missile skills for the rockets was less then 30k at that time. So there is room for improvement.
The Ares a tech 2 shuttle? I don't think so.
