I had an idea while drifting off to sleep last night, and after a bit of thought, it seemed to be a go.
The idea is this: Suns give out intense thermal damage, scaled depending on distance from the star, with a modifier for damage inflicted depending on sig radius, like the missle damage at the moment.
The implications (just off the top of my head) are this:
1. Capital ships with heavy thermal tanks can use suns as a staging post for system invasion. Enemy forces would have to refit to attack, if they thought they could.
2. Fleeing smaller ships/fleets can "take a risk" and engage close to a sun if they have a heavy thermal tank, or to escape standard fit ships.
3. Different types of suns give out different levels of damage, depending on age, size etc.
4. Gives a bigger role to logistics ships, target painting ships.
5. Adds a new dynamic to the POS/NPC Station/Conquerable strategy we currently enjoy, and means that smaller corps can take a stab at established 0.0 bases without having to invest or risk in POS infrastructure.
..
Boudn to be lots of other ideas too.. but those are just the ones that occurred to me at the time of having the idea.
Whatcha reckon? :B

Loser!
Shouldn't it be EM damage too?
Considering the EM waves that come off a star are... pretty intense
And what about explosive? A star is basically a zillion explosions going off at once held together by the gravity created by its immense mass.
Imagine a fleet of ships getting nailed by a coronal mass ejection. That would be pretty cool..

The thing is, you never fly near the suns of EvE.

You don't even get all that close, really. I'd rather see it do something crazy to scanners or targeting systems or something. Solar wind and whatnot.
