My Caldari character is low on ISK (about 20k I think), in a T1 Frigate (Bandar), and using railguns (a 75mm and a 125mm) with antimatter ammo (which I believe is the best, right?). Generally, do not use a mining ship in a combat. You will lose it easier.
then got promptly blown away in the next mission I took (3rd or 4th one after finishing the scripted ones) -- rescuing some people on a bus that was hit by pirates. Worlds Collide - Level 1 - Cartel/Guristas. It's really a very easy mission once you know how.
I chalked it up to bad luck, bought another ship, aborted the mission, and took another. Bad choice. You should have asked for help.
This mission had me take out a bunch of drones (probably 10-15), but I couldn't even hold off the first squad of 4 drones long enough to kill one of them, so I had to abort and warp out Rogue Drone Harassment. Again, bad choice. Read above response.
My question is this: What am I doing wrong? Should I have better equipment to run level 1 missions? If so, what's a good target, and how can I get enough ISK to buy it? Mine? You gave up too easily.
The first time I did Worlds Collide myself, I lost 3 ships. When my 4th ship has gone up in flames (and out of money too!), I asked for help in local. A nice gentleman helped me. In the first level 2 mission I got, I couldn't hit any cruisers. I warped out and trained heavy missiles for half day, returned to mission and finished it.
Tip for not losing any ships - Shield tankers 1) When lagging badly, warp out if you haven't done your homework. 2) When entering a mission that you don't know, find a warpable object and point your ship that way. Always verify warp alignment from time to time. 3) When shield < 40%, activate shield booster and stop it when capacitor is below 33%. 4) When shield < 33%, stay warp aligned. 33% is the peak shield recharge rate. 5) When shield < 25%, think of warping out soon.
To avoid unnecessary incoming damages: 1) Get as far away from all but one group asap. If you are not within their activation range, they won't pursue you. 2) Shoot only those shooting at you, or pick only the group closest to you. If you even land one shot at another group, they will all approach and shoot you. 3) Do not use drones or shoot stationary guns if other unaggrivated groups are nearby.

Originally by: Ricky Starwalker As for optimal range: Does the "optimal range" field on the equipped turret (what I see when I right-click, choose 'show info,') change to account for ammo? Or do we have to compute this "adjusted optimal range" manually?
Every module stat you see in when doing a 'Show Info' on your ship in space, already has skills and ammo modifiers applied. If it says 20 km optimal, it is 20 km. No further math needed.
