speaking in battleships and level 4 missions / pve
when the best armor repairer is :
centus x-type large armor repairer
2800 powergrid 46 cpu 1260 hp/repaired 450 energy activation cost 15 seconds cycletime
and the best shield booster is :
gist x-type xlarge shield booster
500 powergrid 170 cpu 672 hp/repaired 204 energy activation cost 4 seconds cycletime
so let's see an average for 20 seconds for example :
armor with repair systems 5 vs. shield with shield compensation 5 :
2240 repaired vs. 3360 repaired 800 energy vs. 918 energy 2,8 hp/energy vs. 3,66 hp/energy
looks pretty even one could say...
but let's say you need to repair a bit more... so we add for shield a shield boost amplifier... the best one does add 45% for 77 cpu / 1 powergrid... and for armor sadly we have to stick a second lar on...
so we have armor vs. shield :
4480 repaired vs. 4872 repaired 1600 energy vs. 918 energy 5600 powergrid vs. 501 powergrid 96 cpu vs. 247 cpu 2,8 hp/energy vs. 5,30 hp/energy
well...
let's say we have to repair a bit more... so we add a crystal implant set for the booster and for armor we might as well forget about it but we of course take a third lar...
then it is like :
6720 repaired vs. 7484,85 repaired 8400 powergrid vs. 501 powergrid 138 cpu vs. 247 cpu 2,8 hp/energy vs. 8,15 hp/energy
The balance in that is hard to understand... And since i doubt there is anything going to happen about that, it is either jump on the balance train or keep on hearing about the "skill" of the shield tanking podpilots...

Becasue we can all afford faction/officer boosters. ^_^
But yes, we shield tankers are cool like that.

The simple answer, is that faction equipment is not balanced. |

O RLY?
My Gistii SSB Cerb disagrees! Silence! Don't make TomB nerf it! I want to keep doing L4 missions requiring absolutely no risk...

Well, for one thing, most ships I've seen built for armour tanking (and thus actually have lots of high slots) already have pretty good resistances to all four damage types.
On the other hand, the Caldari ships I'm flying all have HUGE holes in the shield resistances, and generally you have to share cap boosting with the mid slots needed for shield boosting AND resistance stuff.
So it seems balanced in that regard. You cannot just consider sheer boosting without considering how much resistance to damage you have!

You have to ignore the faction stuff because its bull****. The T2 variants of everything are spot on, as are the T1. Its those damn Gist x-Types that have absolutly no equivalent on the armor side.
/me begs devs to let all the pretty faction armor stuff in the DB onto TQ.
CFW (Certified Forum Warrior) I kill people ingame too. |

Shield Tanking + Tackling = gimped tank. Armor tanking + Tackling = gimped DPS.
Shield tanking puts your ecm capabilities (tackling aside) at 0. Armor tanking leaves you with multiple med slots free for unleashing ecm havoc on your enemy (along with those lovely MWD's and Cap boosters). There is some balance... although comparing armor and shield tanking is like comparing a truck to a minivan. They're both cars, but they both excell in different circiumstances. ____________________________________________ Don't worry aboutit |

I find that shield tanking has a upper hand ive noticed...
But the gap between these two tanks aren't as vast as one might thing if you take into all the factors with both shield and armour tanking...
When u compare pure active armour repping/shield boosting... then of course things are gonna be different...
But you also have to take in other factors ... such as resistance boosting... armour definately has a hands down advantage with boosting all resistances passively.. and to great effect...
I think this coupled with cap power relays makes the armour tank more then respectable...
however, i still will admit... i have an easier time fitting for a decent shield tank then an armour tank...
