I think most people would be enthusiastic except that more objects in space, is more server and client load, is more lag, is more node crashes, is more annoyance...
Maybe in six months you will have a market, or at least an appreciative audience.

GMs generally frown upon 'can Art' - because it causes lag. I remember a thread few months ago, on this very forum, where GMs had the prospective 'can artist' remove and ananchor all the cans, or face a ban, specifically due to lag. It was a tearful thread, I tell ya.
Looks Ok, though.

If you place the cans in a place where few people ever go, such as a high sec moon in a system a bit off the beaten track, it's OK since you're not creating too much lag.
If you place it near a station or stargate you are breaching the EULA. - Three years old |

Edited by: GM Arkanon on 19/09/2006 08:55:49 Hello everyone.
I want to alert you to the fact that creating 'can art' is potentially a breach of our EULA. To whit:
7 - CONDUCT A. Specifically Restricted Conduct 1. You may not take any action that imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on the System.
Leaving a large amount of containers in space can have serious implications for the entire system. I verified this the other day, while investigating a lag complaint. After we removed a can art piece located in the system, it stopped lagging, so I think it't safe to say that it contributed significantly to the lag in the system.
We will shortly be publishing a policy regarding this issue, after it has been discussed internally. We would rather not have to take action against any player because of this, as we know that the intention of the players involved are not malicious, but please be aware that the creation of can murals is a breach of our EULA and potentially an actionable offense.

If that was the case has anyone (dev/gm/whoever) considered that a complete cleanup of the idle cans left lying around should be done? I remember it was mentioned they were going to do it after a while but nothing ever happened. Given the lag problems right now surely it couldn't hurt to clear up as much of the "junk" that is at least contributing to the current situation?

Well put a life on anchored cans then! How many anchored cans haven't been visited for months/years? How many can owners have completely forgotten where they put cans?
If a can is anchored, a countdown should start (1 month?). If the can isn't opened after a month, it deteriorates due to space debris impacts and pops. If it is opened, the timer resets. Simple, no?

QTM took down a huge K - O sign in cans in the arvasaras system in lonetrek, we got war dec'd by them then removed their cans and sent them a bill for removal.
We had even asked them politly via evemail to remove it then a few days later we got a war dec.
So we took em down, less lag in arvasaras.

Just because the lag reduced after the cans were removed does not prove that the cans caused the lag. It shows that cans MAY cause lag, but does not prove that they are the main cause. There may have been many other factors involved in the lag that you were not aware of.
I have often left hundreds of cans in a system after ratting for a few hours and seen no appreciable lag develop.
Sign art would only be a breach of the EULA if you can conclusively PROVE that the cans are responsible for the lag

The EULA is worded in such a way that logging on is a severe breach of the EULA.
Thats typical for legal documents. If EULAs and contracts would be that conclusive and unquestionable as many people want you to believe, where do you think do those hordes of lawyers come from? ;)

What I'd like to know is what kind of resources are being wasted on the thousands of abandoned drones scattered all over mission spots. Pick a system with a good abount of traffic and turn on combat drones on your scanner... literally hundreds of drones all over the place with no ships of any sort anywhere near them. After spotting 5 Hammerhead IIs yesterday I started thinking it might be worth training up scan probes to go retrieve them.

+1 but that's how the game is meant to be played. Can Art is not. Like insta, anchoring cans was not game-designed to make pictures but players did... Anyway, I'd like to hear what ccp have to reply to you because the EULA is not clear about this particular point.

If scan probes would let you scan for drones, it would. Alas, they don't.
This is actually one of my favorite salvage activities, though. If I scan a cluster of tech II drones that's not too far off the ecliptic, I can usually scan them down to a spot within a few hours fast microwarpdriving. Then I'll set a fast ship to it while I need to be AFK.
It's hard to do, but a real rush when all that lovely salvage pops into view on the grid. However fun it may be, though, it's really not worth the time and effort economically, because at most you're usually chasing five tech II drones, and it can be hours of work to find 'em without scan probes.

There is an easy solution for Can art lag: Make the art in some safe spot, and then leave shuttle called Can Art Here nearby.
Make it within 1.5AU of hub gate, and now people can use cheapest scan probes to have a look :)

Heh, this reminds me, one day I was out practically alone in a system, no real traffic, 3 people in local at the time and had been for awhile, I knew one was in a station, and wasn't sure where the other was, but never showed up on scanner. So, I hit scan, took awhile as it usually does...
And what am I greeted by? around 20 or more combat drones, just sitting around in the middle of space.

Sooooo.....
How will this apply to the many abandoned anchored cans in high-sec, where the players aren't even active anymore, and nobody can remove them?
Drones are no big deal, you can scan/scoop them out no problem. But the cans are basically permanent lag bombs right now when you warp to a popular old belt.

I haven't done it in a long time, but I USED to scan/scoop drones all the time. Used to get piles of them. When did it stop working?

My personal favorite can art: (NSFW) http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0608/nasty_can_art.jpg
Back when I first joined, there was a Dev-sponsored can art competition. Now that eve's strained servers can't keep up with the massive number of people online it suddenly goes from an amusing activity for all to a EULA violation. Gotta love that flexible legalese! If you spam a system with hundreds of cans in a completely random array, it's ignored. If you put hundreds of cans into a picture or words, it becomes a lag-creating eula violation.
If I find a viewpoint from which the thousands of cans in these belts form a picture, can I get a GM to remove them? [/sarcasm]

So when is CCP gonna do about all the 100s... if not 1000s of cans floating around the systems where they took out the asteriod belts. Or all the ones people forgot they knew they had. I bet those are causing more lag then some can art at an out of the way spot. (abandoned high sec ice fields to name one area)

If can art lags a system so horribly, then all the PERMANENTLY ANCHORED CANS in all the high sec areas need to be removed as well. There has to be a TON of old/unused, and even currently used secure cans anchored in all the different high sec systems being put to no good use in particular.
Furthermore there are cans all over the place that amount to nothing more than space grafitti whos sole purpose is to display a message.
If you're going to nerf can art, get rid of the rest of the cans as well. It's impacting my game play when I warp into a belt in a .5 system trying to engage a war target and I lag out because there are so many cans in the belt.

To anyone who is interested, the can art in question is located in the EBO system, if memory serves.

Some of you mentioned that a cleanup of the cans would be useful.
Well some of the cans are years old and soem are only hours old, how would we differentiate between them.
How about a 30 day limit on the cans (or possibly 7 days)
They are cheap enough as it is so its not like buying a can every week is gonna make you go broke
We already have logs in most of the cans, just add something like that, that will pop the can after 7 days or so. (maybe a mail to be sent to you after 6 would even be cool)

very cool :)
I think timers that would make them go down at downtime would let people make can art in the same way that people make ice sculptures :) ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

I'm going to maybe contract myself out for this kind of thing. What kind of rates do you think are fair? Per can used or per letter?

Just because the lag reduced after the cans were removed does not prove that the cans caused the lag. It shows that cans MAY cause lag, but does not prove that they are the main cause. There may have been many other factors involved in the lag that you were not aware of.
I have often left hundreds of cans in a system after ratting for a few hours and seen no appreciable lag develop.
Sign art would only be a breach of the EULA if you can conclusively PROVE that the cans are responsible for the lag
Visit any ice belt in empire, I triple dog dare you.
Witness the crushing lag as hundreds of anchored and probably mostly unused cans are on grid with you.
That said, anywhere ELSE in the same system, it doesn't seem to have the same effect. But on-grid, you'll be lucky to see a slide show. ___________________________________

Tbh some can art is well err art others well lets just say not so good the MC's shark was awesome before it was altered,
maybe CCP could make 1 system where people can do their can art legal like or summat , could become a tourist point :)
suppose its a bit like graffiti , you prob can never stop it but you can control it.
anyway thats my 2 cents :)
