Some questions on the Ferox. It seems like a ship with many sides to it.
I know the typical mission running and ratting set up is to use 5 launchers.\
But its bonuses seem to be feasible for Gun boat and EW boat as well. When would you stick five guns on the thing? What type of guns? Is that purely and pvp set up? And Last, when are guns better than missilesŕ.

Common sense and reading what bonuses that ship has hints using 250mm rails, or 200mm depending on tracking need and taste and so on |

Ok, lets begin.
The ferox >is< primarily a gunboat, just alot of people fly it with missiles due to tracking + the lack of skills needed to be good with missiles compared to guns. It isnt that good at EW, due to its feeble cap, but EW drones in the dronebay is never a bad idea. 5 guns, of course. Railguns mainly, due to the range bonus, and no it isn't purely PVP. It is faster to NPC using railguns than missiles, due to the higher DPS, but they require more skills. Guns are better than missiles quite often ---------------------------

Don't forget that the typical UberTankÖ Ferox can't fit 5 medium guns very well unless you use the smaller versions of them (read: shorter range ones). Nos and large extenders take up a LOT of its powergrid. ---------------------------- Remember, killing a Goon isn't murder. They don't have souls. |

WIth the right fitting - 5 rails (250mm) and AB for npcing you could then fly in and pick them off at optimal range - u would not need the NOS and can use 3 LE with Rat specifc hardner or charger....? Guess there are many variations on this.
But what about Ferox for pvp - guns or missiles?

For PvP I'd go with guns, as missiles take too long to hit, especially at range. With the ship bonus it makes a reasonable sniper with the right fittings.
For PvE I use 5 T2 250mm rails and 2 assault launchers. Only 1 large T2 extender, 1 multispec shield hardener and 1 rat-specific, leaving room for a couple of other mods (currently 2 x T2 tracking computers which pushes the optimal+falloff distance with AM out to about 45km). Low slots 2 x T2 mag stab and 2 x T2 PDU - tears through level 3 missions.
IMO AB is a waste of space on a Ferox, but each to their own. It's usually more effective to take 2 or 3 types of ammo out with you and switch ammo to match the target range. I use AM out to 45km, lead out to standard max sensor range and iridium for longer ranges (when I need to sensor boost). Tungsten and Iron are just too wimpy damage wise, and if you need to aggro a rat further than the max range of your ammo it doesn't matter if you miss... just loose off a couple of rounds 'til they target you then turn off the guns until they come into range.

For PVP(group PVP), a good setup, if you have the skills would be:
HIGHS: 5 x T2 250mm Rails
MEDS: 3 x Tracking Computer IIs 2 x Sensor Boosters II
LOWS: 3 x Magnetic Stabilizer IIs Small rep might not be a bad idea for the last slot in case you take armor damage.
If you don't have all the skills for Tracking Computer IIs, then you could replace those with named or use tracking enhancers in your lows instead which will allow you to fit Invulnerability fields in your Meds. --------------------------------------------------

For PVP, the Ferox is best used with Missiles. Why? Because Missile Launchers don't use Cap, it allows you to make a Passive tank that will immuine to NOS and Dists. To each there own, but the last thing I enjoy during a PVP battle is having my guns shut off due to being nosferatued.
I use something a long the lines of this
5 X Heavies 1 X med Nos 1 X Med Cap Dist
2 X Large Extender 2 X Passive Resists 1 X Invul Field
3 X SPR 1 X BCU ------------------------------------- AANI ARCH |

The "typical" nbertank is built around 5 heavy launchers, to free enough CPU and PG for the 3 Large Extenders ... in my opinion, it's a bad use of the ship, but it works.
You can fit a really solid tank on a rail-Ferox, 2 hardeners, Med Shield Booster, Shield Boost Amplifier and a Large Extender (more a buffer than anything else), but it's an active one ... not really ideal when you're NOSed, but tanks about the same DPS as the passive recharge rate of the "typical nbertank".
You'll need more skills in Engineering (cap skills) to make it work tough.

If you get NOS'd in a rail setup something went wrong :)

You are in a Caldari BC. You can't dictate range, Period.
Even a standard phoon setup will be able to close on you, and you can't kill it fast enough with rails do to having only 5 turret slots before it starts giving you fits with transversal.

Then you warp off
Of course your not dictating range, but you shouln't be flying solo either. If your sniping, you stay alligned and get out when appropriate. Ideally you did warp in at your optimal (which should be pretty high with rails) and can snipe until you need to warp. Your not going to take out a phoon solo, much less anything larger than a cruiser. But used for gang fire support, a rail ferox works. ---

I have been tinkering with a "railrox" and my setup is :
5X 250 mm rail I 1x assualt launcher 1x standard launcher ---- 1x em ward T1 1x invul field T1 1x Med shield extender 2x Tracking Comp I ---- 1x Tracking enhancer I 3x Magnetic Field Stab I
Tracking speed -- 0.0387 (base 0.023) ROF -- 4.18 (6.38) Damage Mod -- 4.25 (2.75) Optimal 25K antimatter; 81K Iron

Actually, it has more to do with Railguns having ****-poor DPS on a Ferox, and the cap you save by using missiles not only lets you tank much better, but it let you opt for the passive tank, which can be quite beastly.

Ferox and Moa should really get 1 more turret hardpoint :/ Personally I go with rails because they do nearly twice the DPS of missiles. That and instant dmg is worth the worse tank.
