I've mined and then ratted my way up in the world a bit, currently I'm piloting a Caracal. I've trained to get into a Ferox, but I'm still a bit shy on money. I mostly earn my isk by ratting in .5 sec space - it's slow going, but every now and then I get some amazing loot.
What are some suggestions for me to earn a bit more money? It seems like there is not much in the way of continuity going from the ratting I have been doing to the next level. None of the rats are a challenge anymore. I had a great run one night in .4 space, but then got gatecamped and podded. It didn't upset me, or make me whine on the forums or talk smack in local - it was my fault, and I didn't really lose all that much anyway.
I guess I'm just looking for some advice as to where I should go from here... missions? They seem kinda boring to me, not to mention very involved to get into. Should I try to find a corp/alliance that holds .4 or lower space and see if I can rat in there for a fee or something?
I don't want to join a different corp, as I'm currently in a corp with 6 RL friends. I'd be willing to look at an alliance, but I don't know what we as a corp of newbies would have to offer.

Need money fast? Mine some of the higher-end 0.6-0.5 ores like Pyroxeres and the like. It's even more boring that ratting, but the ISK vs Hours ratio is much, much higher.

I mined for a while and made a bit of money. Most of my buddies are still mining, and I have made quite a bit more money than them. Of course, that one implant I got in .5 space worth 26 million isk really put me in the lead, but even before that I was making more isk/hour than them just killing rats and selling the loot.

Do level 2 missions - you can make 1 to 2 mil isk an hour. In a Car it should be easy and quick. You can be in a Ferox in a couple of days.

My friend... perhaps a little piracy is in order. I smile more when I make a kill or ransom than I ever did watching the cargo hold fill up with gravel.
The flow of green is not quite so consistent and the risks are great but the fun factor far out ranks these little problems. Trust me, you will get a rush from a kill that is simply not comparable to finding a shiney rock to mine or finishing a level x mission.
Off course this is mearly my humble opinion.
Good luck in whatever you do.

Edited by: Ral YoungBeard on 20/09/2006 16:04:36 Rat in 0.0. It's not as hard, nor as dangerous, as you might think.
Got buddies? A group of frigates can kill battleship spawn. The neat thing about it is most BS can't hit frigates due to their size and speed. (You do generally have to pick non-missile-spamming rats to attack.)
The most dangerous part is getting past the chokepoint gatecamps. There's plenty of info around about instajump and safespot bookmarks to get you through. (E.g., our guide: Linkage)

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try to address them... kinda hard as it seems I can't view the entire thread from the reply screen. Ah, the back button works.
Level 2 Missions - to be able to do those, I assume I'd have to go and do Level 1 missions until I get high enough standings with the agents, correct? This is what I meant when I said they seemed like an involved process... I'd have to get back in my Cormy or Merlin, warp all over, and do a bunch of low reward missions.
Lowsec Ratting - I think I will attempt this again, with hopefully a bit more knowledge and security. I've been learning how the map can be invaluable, so perhaps it's time I risk my arse out there again.
Piracy - I come from a background with quite a bit of roleplaying, and I'm not sure I want this particular character to become a pirate. I was planning on perhaps making a strictly "Yarry" alt, but since you can't train 2 pilots at once I've no idea when or if I will get around to it. My guess is that down the road a bit Beefy here may turn to the darkside, but then again he may not. Thanks for the friendly reply though.
Ratting in 0.0 - I will actually probably try to go this route, as from what I read it is actually less dangerous than lowsec.
Thanks again guys.

If you do decide to go the missioning route, train your Social skills (Connections especially) as they make getting the higher level agents a LOT easier.

Lvl 2 missions - Unfortunately, you do have to run lvl 1 missions to build up standings to earn a lvl 2 mission. Pull up the Corporation Info sheet for whatever corp you choose, and you'll see an Agent's tab, this will list all agents, and through there you can see which are available, their quality, and what be able to locate them.
I suggest finding a decent lvl 1 mission agent of the best quality you can find in a system you desire, and work that agent until you can either A) get a lvl 1, quality 18+ agent for that corp, or B) have a lvl 2 agent available, also in a system you desire.
Lowsec Ratting - The "jumps per hour" option on the map can sometimes help you find a good losec system to rat in. Pirates love to camp well travelled routes, so finding a system a little off the beaten path can help, not always the case, but worth a shot.
Piracy - Pirates are pirates, while I do tend to think gate-camping pirates (not defense forces, mind you) are the dregs of EVE. But there are many forms of piracy which I think enhance the gameplay experience in a way random gatecamping does not (for me).
0.0 ratting - Honestly, I haven't tried it myself. Similar to lowsec, the LOCAL window is your best friend.

I have alot of luck ratting in lowsec systems with NO stations. It's very quiet usually, and if someone is in local, he's out and about in space either mining, ratting, or pirating. It's that simple.
The drawback? In my frig, I have very little space to store loot and ammo, so I either end up leaving alot of loot behind, or I place secure canisters in that system and store the loot there to be picked up later with an indy. I also use the secure cans to store my ammo so fewer runs back to civilization to resupply.
