Edited by: Testicular Testes on 20/09/2006 07:14:48 Lots of purple dots shooting at one dude in unaccelerated footage with Nightwish playing in the background. Footage of the T1 gear in the can being looted has to be included.
Runner ups are the Rook/Falcon PoV videos sitting 100k away and activating jammers while fully aligned. That stuff gets my blood pumping too.

People tend to like vber fitted vindicator(or *insert any other faction ship, with vber fitting) movies.
BlasterThron movies seems to be pretty popular overall.

No long pretentious intro. Display your setup, even passive modules. Even fights where you could concieve of either side winning (like vagabond vs battleship). Similarly, as little ganking as possible. Weird setups that work are also nice. And high vid quality.

Small Group/solo work
Fights which aren't totally one sided (there's a difference between having an advantage in skills/numbers and a gank)
Good, fitting music
Display your setup (i.e. don't black it out)
A small intro and smooth transitions between fights/sections

Interesting fights by someone who knows how to play the game with some good music.
Bad videos are ones where you can't see the UI, I could just log onto the game if I wanted to see loads of random ships just flying around.

inSpirAcy's recipe for a good PvP video:
- Straight into the action, I could care less about your corp.
- Solo or small gang, always equalled or outnumbered.
- Clear image with legible damage text.
- Use of novel ships, setups and/or tactics.
- A soundtrack that matches the action and transitions with it.
- An entertaining and descriptive commentary.
If you satisfy all that and I happen to have a lazy afternoon, I might download your video and give it the thumbs up.

- Very good combat footage, no ganks - Good camera work of the combat footage - Good quality - IF you want to story, tell a interesting story. If you dont have a good story, don't tell a story. - Don't make it longer then 10 minutes (there might be rare exceptions), ppl get bored after arround 10 minutes. - Don't put those "omgwtfmy*****" comments into the video. Either the fights show that you are good or they don't.

Edited by: Tanya Kovacs on 20/09/2006 11:07:55 I'm not making eve-movies for my own, but after downloading and watching eve-movies I keep only a few of them:
- the ones with something "special" in them (e.g. good story, rarely flown ships or stylish effects) - vids with good groupfights - vids with close 1vs1 or 1vsX-fights (to sumarise it: interesting movies)
I insta-delete this:
- boring Xvs1-ganks - most of vids featuring the Vagabond, Blasterthorax or Blasterthron - vids featuring one single ship for 30min. Variety 4tw - vids with as much ganks as possible and 8x fast motion (- vids where I can't read the textmessages ) (to sumarise it: boring allday-gankvids) -- All my postings reflects just my personal opinion and my lacking knowledge of proper english.

Edited by: Dark Eagle on 20/09/2006 12:19:57 I'm new to video editing, but I'd say that as long as a video achieves what it set out to achieve, and does not try to be something it is not, then it is worthwhile. Whatever that might happen to be, the three most important things for me are probably:
Atmosphere Directoin Clarity
Edit - In fact, most of all probably a video that, upon seeing it would make somebody have a sudden urge to log in to play eve.

1. Include a storyline, or at the minimum comments/text regarding the various engagments in your flick. 2. You'll never satisfy everyone on music tastes, but we need more vids with rap/hiphop, or slamming tracks of any genre that you've never heard of that gets the head bobbin'. I like hardcorefacebashing music as much as the next guy, but don't include teenie bopper music or certain alternative music. 3. Full-screen-I-can-read-everything-on-the-display quality vids at 1024x, 1152x or 1280x widescreen. There are some really good grainy flicks out there, but having the high-quality, big file size can really separate your video from others. 4. We all want this -- show me something I have never seen before. This can be anything from custom editing to highly one-sided fights you come out on top of, etc. Use your imagination here. This is often very difficult to produce which helps lead to the appeal. 5. I want to see a fight! Fights involve more than activating your guns, let me see your cap and drone management as well. Many flicks today are from people who are just getting into pvp, or finally competant with their pvp skills they will show off that they can kill people. We all like to kill, but it's not always fun to watch you orbit pointlessly as your shield naturally recharges for 3 minutee of unaccelerated gank footage. However, capital ship kills or freighter ransoms are always the exception ;)
I could probably keep going but I'll stop here.

Damn, I've been thinking people would hate me if I used high-quality, large-file vids. I'll fix that right now, thanks for the heads-up.

Edited by: SwindonBadger on 20/09/2006 12:52:00 Its good if u can get the occasional bit of TS or vent talk in there to... listning to one guy going, "Ive got the megathron scrambled" when are u goona get here.. or target calling, if it aint intresting a kicking tune is better,
try not to let a shot run on too long, some fleet battles are prity good only when u speed them up, Im guessing most people like small gang vids as its lot more personal and u genrally have the the gangs moving around rather then all aligned waiting to warp. Some of my favourite big gang/fleet vids are not long range setups, more like 12 bs close range (blaster thron ect ) V 20 to 30 bs cruiser gangs, U get alot more going on since all the bs r moving about and getting into blaster range ect. I really like inty frig gang vids even if its a gank as they still got to work hard to pop a well tanked bs, but inties v inties make for great vids only that trying to hold a camera and do speeds in excess of 3 kps make life hard. A little bit of text in the poast u make or vid explaning where when ext is good spending 3 mins bigging up ur corp and then showing 1 min of ganks is a bit .... doing a cool snappy intro is dandy.
I like good eve vids as much as the game, least u get to focus on other ships u wouldnt have in the battle, camera work is also a big part of how ur vid looks so make sure u get a tripod on a bs if u can for the long shots.

1. Actual content. This means good fights, and not fleet battles or ganks. Fleet battles are fine, sure, but they're really not what people are looking for.
2. High resolution, 800x600 or better, preferably 1024x768 or better.
3. Good effects, but not ones that interfere with the content.
1) is by far the most important.

Thanks, just saved me a week of leaving my PC on while it renders my 160000x120000 video with a bitrate of 4mb/s Believe me, I do my best to keep my files small. Virtualdub and the Xvid codec are god-sends. However my fraps, oddly, seems to capture at 800x600 despite me setting it to capture at full size and running the game at 1600x1200. Perhaps that's simply the maximum.

1152x864 is the largest 4:3 resolution which Fraps will capture in full-size. I run in windowed 1280x760 and capture that, which also works at full size.
Seems whenever there's more than 1000000 pixels at a particular resolution, Fraps will drop to half-size. Dumb, dumb, dumb limitation...

My personal definition of a good eve video is this:-
Something that encourages play, or demonstrates the character of eve in a unique way
In other words, it doesn't have to be shot in ubTr quality with a $5000 rig, edited with Micheal Bay finesse and have THX sound booming through it. No, honestly, it really doesn't. Although it's interesting to see quality like that - it won't make the film good. Only good content will do that.
Regards,
AK.
