No you don't. You can easily survive the first 40 levels on quest based items. If you are going to try and give the game a black eye, at least be honest about it.
WOW Cons: 1. got grind? 2. Skill and Talent system condone cookie cutter builds 3. Crafting is on original and not as rewarding as other MMOs 4. Poor balance in some classes and abilities will make life hell getting into end game raids.

DO find a group of people you like to play with DO enjoy the scenery and environment. (And the music if you're into that.) DO PvP when you feel like playing CS but don't want to be a terrorist or counter-terrorist DO Enjoy the game as you play it.
Edit: Explanation: if your goal is to get to 10.0 standing with your faction's navy, and all you do run missions every day until you get that, you'll understand what the WoW grind is like if you're trying to get to level 60. (Ignore time differences, just the basic concept.)
DO Ignore gear. That's right, you heard me: IGNORE GEAR. Take it if it comes to you, but don't sell everything but your soul to get it.
Following these steps will put off hitting level 60 for a great long while, making your gameplay experience much better.
Getting to 60 is only half of the game... if you enjoy large groups of people fighting epic battles. I am in an AQ guild and do enjoy the events. The only downside of this is the amount of time it demands.

50% of MMO players can't be wrong, it's a good game.
If World of Warcraft is a good game, Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson are good singers.
Interesting comparison. But, when a single game can capture such a large audience, it is obviously doing something right, and much like you comparison points out, "right" is in the eye of the beholder.

Ok, i think Kindakrof got the idea. ;)
Now see, you are wrong here. A large portion of people do not agree with this which makes your comparison fail.

He's on second term, Over. That's enough agreement to me. =/
Just because he is on his second term doesn't not mean he is highly liked (below 30%) currently by the population of the U.S.
