In rural U.S they dont care about us as we dont represent a high enough profit margin to be considered.
My options are Hughes Net Sat, Dish Sat, and mobile 4G.
I have 4G. Can you imagine paying a $300 internet bill every month for 2.5 down/256k up? If you go over the 30ish gigs allowed, pay $15 a gig, which can equate to $150+ game prices due to digi distro. hmmm..a Netflx movie costs me 30+ bucks to watch!!?
using a damn egg timer to remind me how long I can use VOIP per night sucks!!!
We are getting rollover data starting this month, as if it is worth the price. I want to move, bad. |

Comcast 30 Mb down 5 Mb up at home. It regularly gets above those numbers during normal usage.
Some sort of crap Century Link DSL at work, way slower than what I have at home.
Supposedly Gigabit is coming to Minneapolis, but not to the areas where I live or work. Best I could get would be around 100 Mb from Comcast.
And I installed EVE less than a month ago on my new gaming computer ... it took around an hour and a half for the complete install.
When I finally do make an impact on this universe, it will reverberate across the entirety of it, and no one will be able to truthfully claim they don't know me.

thanks for all the info
I was so focused on this forum yesterday that I forgot all about my generator, until he run out of fuel :) I downloaded eve about 60 % and the rest will be in a couple of days when my data meter resets.
about the speed. I did some calculations to be able to compare the speeds that you have given me.
1st , I'm just a simple farmer who doesn't know a lot of how the internet and computers work, but I'm trying:-) 2nd, if I make a mistake please do correct me, I don't have a lot of people around to who I can talk about these things. I live about 3 1/2 hours drive past civilization.:-))
OK , what I think I understood so far:
For some reason windows always tells me the size of a download in GB, but speed is measured in Gb and 1GB is 8Gb? so If I'm correct then 1Gb is 8 000 000 000 bits.
this means that if I'm downloading 8 000 000 000 per hour I have to divide this by 3600 ( 60sec * 60 min) to know how much bits I get per second
8 000 000 000 / 3600 would give me 2 222 222 bits per second or about 2.2 Mb/sec ?
If this is correct then It seems I'm ending up at the bottom of the speed list :)
as always thank you for your time and reactions
Fly safe

ADSL 8-11 megabits down. 0.5-3.2 up.
Theortically average would be 9.5 megabits download, which is 1.2 megabytes per second, so 6GB would take approximately 1 hour and 24 minutes. In reality, it I ignored it for about 4-5 hours.

100Mb fibre to the house (same system Google just rolled out to 32 US cities)
But I am in one of the very few Aussie towns that got proper internet before a change of government and a new "5Mb is all you need to download photos of your daughters playing netball" policy was introduced. Our current government seems under a fantasy that "new technology" will give high speeds over WWII vintage copper phone lines that play up when it rains :D
The only downside for me is I cannot ever move from my current town without potentially facing a huge drop in bandwidth.

According to Speedtest. here in rural northeastern Oregon I'm getting 4.33mb down, 0.90mb upload, with a ping of 80.
That's a DSL connection, and DSL is new to the area - we only just got it here about two months ago. US $36.00 a month. I was ecstatic the day it was turned on
Before that, was using a wonky 3G-equivalent "radio microwave" internet service, which maxed out at 1mb down ($70 a month, "unlimited" downloads but you got throttled to 256k once you exceeded about 20-25gig a month in downloads). On the positive side, such crappy speeds broke me of any and all Facebook game addictions I may or may not have had, much less any Youtube habits I may or may not have had...
Rural areas are shafted here in the United States when it comes to internet service, and "rural" doesn't necessarily mean very far away, either. Where I am right now is just 18 miles (29km) away from the next nearest city of any significant size, yet we only got DSL-level internet service a few months ago.
I've lived most of the last 20 years in assorted small towns, all within 50 miles (80km) of larger towns/cities, and every one of them was at least 10 years behind what our neighbors within an hour's drive of us received. It's a disgrace, imho.
Anyways... a typical Eve release takes a few hours to download, but Eve itself runs just fine even on this slow connection.
