Okay, according to the "rules" the purpose of this forum is:
Quote: This is an out of character forum for discussing corporations, alliances, fan sites and other organizations.
Most seem to interpret the above to mean that this is the political section of the forums. This is where we come to pimp ourselves out, congratulate or slander our enemies, etc... The vast majority of the posts here deal with ideology with regard to the stance one takes within the game. My alliance / corp / alt is better than yours and such. This works well enough and helps everyone who reads these forums get a general idea of who is who in EVE and what they stand for.
Yet here is the thing - EVE is a PvP game. Be it on the market undercutting someone by one ISK to get your stuff sold or warping your fleet in at just the right range to BBQ the enemy and force them off of your POS, the political landscape of EVE revolves and evolves around the battles that take place within the virtual world.
So where are the reports of these fights? Where do we talk about them? This forum seems to be a 'catch all' for several kinds of discussions involving Corps and Alliances. If you are lucky, you might find the actual details of a critical fight somewhere around page 13 of a Molle post. I'll use a recent example.
This past weekend saw the MC engaging in some pretty awesome fights against the pirates in the UK system of 9UY. I've started several times to write up how some of those battles went but hesitated for a few reasons. For one thing, Ange1 had already made a great post signaling the effective end of the war. Pilots from both sides are paying thier respects to each other and making comments about the fights that took place.
Yet if you weren't there, all anyone else knows is, "There were some dreads and a bunch of fighters? Then a node crash? Idiot blobbers. Sheesh..." There was so much more going on. There always is!
What I would like to see is a new forum where people can focus not on the politics of the battles fought, but the actual battles themselves. A place for warriors to tell thier side of the story, away from the politics of why it happened covered so well here in this forum.
For example, I'd love to see someone like Verone or Tbone write up their version of events from this past weekend. What was it like to charge out of that POS bubble at twenty Dreads in a frigate with over a hundred fighters at your back? What thoughts did you have when this or that happened next? On the flip side, I'd love to write up things from my perspective, but I don't want my efforts to be buried in the middle of a political thread where it might not ever be seen or appreciated by the other side.
Some might warn that such a forum would degenerate into a lot of talk about kill mails and, "Yes we did!" or "No you did not!" stuff. I'd like to think that, as the RP forums show, people would try to avoid that sort of thing for the opportunity to share some of their adrenaline packed fun with others.
I'm sure someone is going to reply to this and try to say it's a foolish or unnecessary idea, doomed to failure. However, I know that people loved the short write-ups about what happened in the matches of the Alliance tourney. I thought it was worth the effort as I know there are a lot of people here who enjoy a good "War Story" from time to time without having to wade through all of the politics behind it.
So, there's my idea and I'm curious to see what people think. Thanks for your time and... go!

Such forum section would be fitting and interesting to read. However, I worry that any honest attempts at combat summeries would get flooded with flames, accusations, and useless comments.
I doubt ISD could do decent enough job to keep most useless comments out.

Originally by: Nebba Kenezzer I'll be honest with you, Seleene. From my perspective, a detailed analysis would seriously de-flare any big battle. Perhaps I'm too much of a sensationalist, but I like these forums to be full of fun and fire. Most of us can agree that the forums' heyday has long since passed; let's rekindle the flame.
Neb, I totally agree, m8! Fun and fire 4TW! I'm not talking about a detailed analysis so much as just talking about it somehow. Not what fittings you used or that stuff (unless people wanted to), but more of a, "I was there and this is what I saw!" type of thing.
One of the inspirations for this was there is an AAR forum for the game Hearts of Iron 2 on their website. You can literally spend hours reading some of the write ups there and it's fascinating stuff. I'd love to be able to have something similar for us here.
To hit something you're more familiar with, I know that LV and RA have been slugging it out for months. Since Max joined my corp, I've heard some awesome stories about that conflict from him, stuff that I've not seen one whiff of on these forums. Epic fights, the fun that was had, the frustration about things and all that.
I've been to several EVE meets now and I'd say that easily 50% of the talk is about fights or wars and, "OMG, you were there?? Do you remember when this happened?" Then someone walks up and is like, "WTF are you guys talking about?"
I just think it would be cool to have a place to share these stories is all.

Oh, Max saw but a glimpse of the many battles Chow and I have been at the forefront of. I don't think those were that incredible, though--the most exciting fights occured back in the day when all of us old timers had the pvp jigglies
At any rate, it's not a bad idea; I think it'd be even cooler to tie in the eve-history wiki [[ Clickee wiki ]].

Neb, you are now making my argument for me. To many of us, tossing one or two dozen dreads and a hundred support ships into a fight has become passe and 'normal'. Yet we've become jaded and forgotten just how amazing stuff like that is to players who don't see it every day. Even as someone who participates in some of the larger events in the game, it doesn't stop me from being interested in stuff exactly like you are talking about.

I would really like an idea like that, ya know getting to actually know a little bit more detail without having to have friends at the fight You could be having a boring/slow week and you could be hearing about the epic fights in so-so land.
I think the fact that there would be accusations and disagreements about what happened would make it exciting! You see posts in this forum where people try to get it across but usually doesn't work to well. Me like. -----------------------------------------------

Yes pretty and big please. as the "statement from establishment" thread show us it can be done flame free and in good spirit. however forum mods should be extra extra extra jumpy on what comments they would allow in such forum part. eg ask ppl to avoid saying i like ur sig or i <3 hast (well tbh i do but...) etc etc stricly war stories forum.
ok i would allow ppl saying "good read" and things like that as its allways good for the writer to get some feedback. anyhow last thing i want to see is that war stories turns in to flame stories, So ppl reading this and thinking of flaming there instantly plz reconsider what it would take away from community.

As the forumprostitute I am, I fully support this idea. It may very well burn to the ground faster than a deserted house found by Bellon and 10 gallons of rocket fuel but so be it.
The key is to keep it fairly short and to the point, isnt it Marko D that makes some very nice reports from time to time? It should be like those, perhaps with even less "detail" sometimes?
Such a forum, if it worked out properly, would serve as a memorial to great battles and wars that shaped EVE into what ever future we will see. And also, if you are making a movie, got the fraps of a battle but not the words...
Cheers, Lowa

Edited by: Lucian Alucard on 26/09/2006 08:32:54 I aggree with Neb. But the opinion that I have maitained for years that the forums have been in decline is based on a multitude of reasons.
First, there is antiquated system of rules in place. People who frequently get baned do so since they have commited a multitude of minor infractions most notably the Sig size rule, more then once a talented forum entity has banned due to this lame excuse.
Another thing that has to be brought into question is the bias of the "Vol. Squad" members who moderate the forums. They are people to, expecting them to act differently or in a more respectable fashion then what they are is at best assnine. These people have opinions and dislikes, the old guys like myself,Seleene,DS,Chowdown and so forth have seen the Mods do both great things and some seriously shady things over the years. In short no one is perfect and multiple mods should be consulted for any offense that might result in a ban.
Both of the above have lead a good deal of the more impassionate and gifted writers to go underground, two years ago I would frequently write long posts such as this but since certain friends have been removed from the forums over the years the post have become more infrequent and shorter. I am not the only who thinks this way and has reacted as such, why speak your mind when you know your thread is going to be locked, deleted and you get a temporary or permanent ban? I admit free speech has its limits and there is a point others need to be protected but to be bloody honest since The Great Northern War,the Devs have *****ed down increasingly more so every year. And as such many of their old player base has felt the change almost to a point to where we can say that there will never be anymore " Great" wars for there is no longer people to motivate and sensationalise the public anymore.

I have to agree with Nebba, these forums used to be used for exactly what you suggest, in fact I can remember when it was at its peak. During the height of the SA/CA war every fight would have a detailed breakdown on the forums. Simply, people got sick of hearing about it, fleet X&Y engage at X range and the outcome was......
Simply battle reports are boring, for all but the winning side. If you're good, you're good there should be no need to make forums posts to assure yourself of the fact.

That's awfully morbid, Chow. I quite enjoy hearing about what other people are doing in the game. Some of the best stories I've heard come from losses.
Originally by: Chowdown If you're good, you're good there should be no need to make forums posts to assure yourself of the fact.
That's so far from the intent here.
I can understand why Lucian feels the way he does. Due to certain changes over the past few years, people automatically assume that any attempt at creativity or 'fire' as Nebba puts it, will be smothered by either the mods or fellow players. However, it doesn't always have to be like that.
Originally by: Thug Lyfe Isn't there already a roleplaying forum where you can dress up and act out fantasy battles if you want to? Sounds like a perfect place for your sensationally fabulous idea.
I seriously thought about that, however those forums require you to speak in character and not all people want to bother with a fully fictionalized account of events.

I like the idea of a forum for 'war stories'. I'd set it up a bit more generally though, not just limit it to alliance/corporation events. Guess I'm thinking more along the lines of a general stories section.
War stories, stuff you see on C&P occasionally, stuff like what Innominate Nightmare is doing atm, etc.

My issue with it is that 4 out of every 5 threads would degenerate into one of three things:
1) Arguing about who actually won 2) Each side bashing the other for "lame" tactics (be it blobs, POS stuff, accusations of lag sploits, whatever) 3) Whining about lag, of which there is already too much.
While it could make for amusing reading, I suspect it would end up being overmoderated. ----------

Your absolutely right Seleene,it doesn't have to be that way. But do you really think people could get away with stuff like they used to? The old Jade vs. Prophecy bash fests, the DBP vs. FE threads, christ the old CA vs. m0o threads? No it would never be allowed to get past post six. And thats both good and bad. Good because we don't have to deal with 3 page long posts anymore but bad that it restricts content, there are a majority of players who believe that the only content there is or that at least matters is the one you make for yourself once you log in,I have always been of the opinion that the game we play is only a part of a larger picture.
In games like WoW,EQ,L2,AC,FF XI,you get to see the character you build and you have visible human interaction of sorts, you lack that same interpersonal relationship and hence you get a opprotunity to create that and it doesn't have to be relagated to the realm of RP,as the opening FMV to this game states this is OUR tale and these forums not only provide us the opprotunity to create our own personal culture but to chronical it as well.
As such I have always inpart approached this board as a metagamed bastardised version of an RP board, something are said to incite feelings or state opinions that are not my own and tow a popular party line and then sometimes I state my fricken mind,I have a rep for being a nutcase who says what he thinks and my corp history reflects my distaste for those who do not get the hint that I speak my mind. The point is we are given the opportunity here to voice our veiws on Eve and the actions other people take as well as report them.
In my humble opinion this should be a political news and banter forum and a forum like Seleene stated should be made to discuss actual battles, tell cool stories,I mean tbfh 98% of all eve combat happens in gangs of less then 15 people, yet we only hear about the big epic fleet battles and tho those battles are really great and awe inspiring at times it does get dull after awhile. Who here wouldn't like to hear about some lone pirate getting hunted down by 6 guys then beating the odds and winning, then having the Killmails to back it up?
I think this is a great idea now that that no one has a eve wide TS server up anymore. Which in and of itself is an idea I have been working on resurecting.

Yes! I¦d love to read more _personal_ stories from pilots in the fights, not just summaries (+ spin :D). You can find them sometimes in the c&p forum, i.e. "first ransom" stories and the like.

It could be a good idea to allow only "counter-stories". If the event in question looked different from your pov - write down your story or shut up! :)

This is a great idea.
MC have had some memorable battles recently in 9UY and Istotard and it would be great to have a platform in which to share these stories.
It is often interesting to read about how a battle unfolds. What sort of strategy did the FC's have? Did both parties set up for a short range engagement or long range? Were Cap ships used?
There are so many engagements that go on daily in the EvE Universe that would be so interesting to read about. When you dont live and operate in a certain area it is still interesting to read about how the inhabitants of that region are doing.

Its a great idea, Seleene. However after a while, it will become pretty standard describtions, and thus very boring. Maybe some of the big battles revolving capital ships and such will be interesting a while longer, until it also becomes normal.
I can just imagine the site be filled with: "Great fight we had, I warped in with my carrier, and my whole gang followed. Lots of pew-pew." or even worse "Omg, it would have been a epic battle, had it not been for the terrible lag"

What Seleene asks is something many of us would like instead of the usual crap that is spoiled on these forums..
Want a suggestions seleene? Go to the proper forum here on EVE-O and make a new forum request for a forum called "Battle Reports".
There people like you, or I, could read up those battle reports from people that were inside the battlefield, their impressions and stuff.. Of course we will always get the same stupid flamers, but hey! maybe we can get some of those nice reports we really like to read.
Nice idea. I second it.

Then again I'm one of those crazy mooks that takes detailed notes (and sometimes films) his WH40k battles so I can make a good writeup. Recently they were against the backdrop of The Fall of Medusa V.
In addition hooray for Rogue Trader tournaments.
But steering back to the topic, I would like to see a forum for such a thing. Adding the sort of dramatic flare to battles that gets muddled in current annoucement formats.

I fear the danger of trollification, but even so, a battle report/debrief would be quite nice. I enjoy watching 'combat vids' because I like to know what went on.
Problem is, any 'OMG we fought so and so, and they suck' in this forum is treated, rightly, as trolling. There's a lot of stuff that happened in 9UY that I'm aware of. Probably a lot more that I missed. And I expect that happens daily around EVE.
