Time to put my money where my mouth is and write up a canidate for a new 'War Story' forum...
The Job
The MC got word that our presence in 9UY was desired around the middle of last week. While the conflict had been going on for nearly two months by some accounts, it had reached a stalemate due to a number of reasons. Lag and node crashes had caused problems for both sides and resulted in a situation where some battles got turned on their ear. Our client wanted this war to end because, at this point, it just wasnÆt fun anymore and people wanted to move on.
Mobilization
Word went out early Thursday morning that we would be basing in Providence out of ISS Fabrica and ISS Condiso for an attack on the Pirate Coalition assets that were siegeing the UrshaÆKhanÆs UNITY station. Having just suspended operations against Namtz'aar K'in, the MC corps already had our forward bases stocked up and ready to go. Now they needed to be moved to our new area of operation.
We spent most of Thursday and Friday shifting our fleets into position and gathering updated intel on the target while opening lines of communication with ISS and UK. Several escorted freighter runs took place which moved the entire combat might of the alliance from Gelfifven to Providence in less than 48 hours.
Friday night and Saturday morning saw cyno fields popping up at regular intervals as a large wing of the MC cap ship fleet consisting of over forty carriers and dreadnaughts moved into ISS Fabrica and began preparations for the fight to come.
Initial Planning
Our scouts had confirmed information already given to us by UK and ISS as to the layout and disposition of the Pirate POSÆs. There were five Establishment POS and one owned by Coalition of Carebear Killers. UK had eight large POSÆs of their own maintaining sovereignty of the system. The war had turned into an ugly stalemate, a vicious fight that saw either side gaining an upper hand week by week only to see victory turn into disaster at the last moment.
It was our job to jump in the middle of this and force the situation to a conclusion favorable to our client no matter the cost.
We knew that the enemy had between ten and twelve carriers available in total but due to pilot availability they rarely fielded more than six or seven at a time. They also had a Nyx Mothership which we were fully prepared to engage for the opportunity to take it out of the equation if given the chance. Intel also said that the enemy could put at least ten Dreadnaughts in the field.
We worked with the leadership of ISS and UK to determine a plan of action and prepared to start the beginning of the end to this conflict on Saturday night.
But then an opportunity presented itself and we went in early...

Edited by: Seleene on 27/09/2006 16:16:55 POS Assault #1 û Planet 3, Moon 3, Saturday Afternoon
Local in 9UY was very low (less than 20 people) and we already had a decent part of our capital fleet on station and ready to go. WeÆd initially not planned to begin POS-busting operations until later that night but the opportunity to get an early hit in was too tempting. We counted on the enemy not expecting us to go this soon and while we were probably right, their response was much stronger than anticipated.
The call went out to form up and in less than 30 minutes we had about a dozen support BS, an equal number of smaller ships and a pair of ISS carriers on station in the system. Twelve MC Dreadnaughts, one UK Dread and a pair of ISS Dreads made up the attacking capital ship fleet. Three allied carriers stood by to provide fighter support to our support ships.
Not bad for half an hourÆs notice.
Our support fleet took up position outside the range of the POS guns and we jumped in our Dread then warped them to the enemy POS. The POS was a large Minmatar tower with at least six large guns and several smaller batteries. It also had at least four active shield hardeners online but the force field quickly began to crumble under the weight of the firepower weÆd brought to pound on it.
WeÆd noticed a few more enemy pilots entering the system or logging on, including Verone and one of the known Nyx pilots for the Establishment. Soon enough, our scanners had picked up the enemy fleet which seemed to consist of the Nyx and at least seven enemy carriers. It was a sobering report. Our Dreads were locked down in Siege mode and committed. MC pilots were all too well aware of the weight of firepower that many carriers could bring to bear, so we watched with trepidation as enemy frigates began warping into the POS bubbleà trailed by dozens of fighters.
The POS shields were degraded to fifty percent and, even as the enemy fighter count approached seventy, the order was given to continue. As our dreads entered another cycle of siege mode, the enemy frigates and fighters stormed out of the POS bubble, every one of them going after the Moros piloted by BDCIÆs Otto Bismarck. Now for those of you who have never seen such a sight, itÆs goddamn scary, but weÆd prepared for this. We hadnÆt anticipated such a quick and heavy response, but all we could do was follow through with our plans.
Our dreads dropped a countering force of T2 drones and our small support fleet, with all T2 guns and ammo, warped forward to begin sniping at the enemy fighters from long range. OttoÆs tank began to fail almost immediately as the fighters tore into his ship. After two minutes passed, his armor fell below 50% and continued to plummet. Things were looking bleak however the fighter cloud was beginning to thin. Our snipers reported great success but the real defense came from the Ogre IIÆs directed by our five Moros pilots. As the MorosÆ slow targeting systems finally began to get locks on the fighters, their drones cut a swath through them.
It almost wasnÆt enough as OttoÆs Moros caught fire, dipping deep into structure. Finally though, the number of fighters had been diminished to a point where his tank was able to overcome the damage being dealt. Soon, after nearly eight solid minutes of fighting, the remaining fighters were pulled back. We estimated that over half of the attacking fighters had been destroyed and the POS, that weÆd never ceased fire on, was now in reinforced mode... -

Originally by: Ange1 I think you have to bear in mind that until this assault, we had never done POS warfare before.
Didn't you just have like four or five weeks of it?
Still, I agree. Anyone can look at what happened in retrospect and think of ways to have "won" or done a better job. As it was, both sides got to experience something new and different (I've never faced 100+ fighters before for damn sure) and it was a learning experience for all.
Originally by: Ange1 A very nice write up Seleene, think I'll throw my own personal view of the last battle later when I get home from work ;)
Excellent. I'd love to see more of this type of thing from everyone. -

Originally by: Dumus I do not doubt you would have still had your victory and it would have been worthy of much more praise than I am prepared to give this one. I apologise profusely if this sounds remotely like sour grapes. I assure you it is not.
Excellent post, m8.
Dude, I actually understand exactly what you mean. A lot of us have sat around the past few days thinking the same things. If it were possible to replay the entire thing in a lag-free environment, I would do it in a heartbeat. I've little doubt that had the servers been up to it that I have still been taking screenshots tonight of yet another slugfest with you guys. A hard-won victory is always much sweeter. Not that this was easy! LOL!
Still, I get what you mean. You wanted to make us really pay for it and TBH, I'd have gladly traded a few cap ship losses for the ability to play out something of this scale the way it should be. It's just imaginary money and I'd have loved the chance to hop into a frigate myself and dive bomb one of your cap ships as well!
I'd wish you luck, but then I'd be condemning some poor bastard to a merciless podding by your evil pirate ways.

Max is nuts. I actually started to ***** at him to get the hell away from the POS until I saw an enemy frigate explode and he's like, "Sorry, Boss, I'm busy here." -

Those pics were taken on an alt flying a Revelation. Or did you think I had lasers mounted on my Moros? His drone skills are still getting up there.
Thanks to everyone who has left a comment on this post. In a way, I find this to be more fun (and certianly less taxing) than making videos. It's certianly motivation to try to do more reports like this in the future. I hope Eddz and others keep it up. -
