Edited by: Isidor Sek on 28/09/2006 21:06:24 Edited by: Isidor Sek on 28/09/2006 21:05:49 Despite the large scale border wars that dominated most of '06 in New Eden, fundamentally the last 6 months had seen an unusual period of stability, with the major powers of 0.0 building at a furious rate, both in power, wealth and capability. With the super conflicts of 2005 a valuable lesson was apparent, rarely did both sides survive an all out conflict involving two superpowers. The spring of '06 saw the old superpowers gone, new powers arising and ones with wiser more devious minds.
Ironically, given the naming conventions of our beloved CCP, a cold war arose. The new Superpowers still fought, but now they waged it on the territory of others. Each superpower became surrounded by third world satellite nations, BoB began the trend but its soon became standard practice. In exchange for ability to call upon the superpowers considerable military to protect them, these satellites fought by proxy. So, though war rages, the eve universe reached an unsteady equalibrium.
As the new age of Kali approached, the pace of the superpowers efforts to scale up thier industrial capacity, military might and territorial control. For those of us who quietly observe and are the historians and lore keepers, the pressure of this momentum towards final and true territorial dominace has been awaited with anticipation.
Despite its outings against Goon and Stain, BoB had sat back for many many months, the wise in 0.0 never took this as a sign to assume they were a fading influence in 0.0 but that some truly evil plan was a foot. It was always a case of simply waiting to see what it would be, perhaps more importantly when it would be.
BoBs decision to unleash its forces now is a fascinating one and it may well mark an extraordinary period of land grabbing as a domino effect crosses the Superpowers: Grab land now before territorial defences make the task a much harder prospect, perhaps more vitally destroy your enemy now before he becomes a harder target.
Whether BoBs focus is the South West or the whole South, the knock on effect could be a war of a scale not seen since the Great Northern War. I must admit, despite my role as a diplomat, that the historian in me find the prsopect of a war of this scale a truly wonderous prsopect.
I merely ask all those that participate, by choie or necessity... fight well, fight hard, fight honorably. In eve there are a rare oppurtunities such as this one to make legends, to create stories and epic tales that will last years.. sieze this moment:
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more, Or close the wall up with our English dead! In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger: Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood."

edit: didn't know BoB actually just declared war atm o_O, keep that in mind when reading this
Like he said, the big states are stable - look at ASCN, BoB, without a doubt the two great superpowers in EVE at the moment. How much has their territory changed in the last month? The last three? And if anything, they could even be expanding as Querious was taken into BoB and granted local autonomy to FIX; on the contrast, look at the North, the West, the northern part of the East - its in a complete state of flux.
Kali will indeed be an interesting time for EVE. I will say one thing, BoB and ASCN will likely come into conflict sooner than later - when that happens, either the war will leave both sides scarred and bleedy so badly they'll take more than a month to recover, or a swift and sudden strike could leave EVE with a single hegemonic power. If its the latter case, when combined with system defenses and gate controls, we could be looking at an empire to which there might be no stopping...or at the very least it'll be an incredible ***** to take down.
Indeed, will they make their move after or before Kali? Regardless of the server's ability to handle fights? Before or after POS Warfare and constellation soverignty changes are to be introduced?
This is an exciting time indeed!

Speaking as an observer only...
It is assumed (& rightly so imo) that if & when there is a clash of the superpowers, itl be BOB aggressing one of the superpowers. It also appears assumed at ASCN will be their target, perhaps because theyre more of a threat, perhaps coz theyre the easier option its not for me to say.
However if such events did take place, id be very surprised if it remained all in the South. Given that if one of the two sides did emerge victorious & strengthened rather then bled white, theyd be an almost unstoppable entity. It seems to me that most of the alliances in the East & North would side with one or the other or simply be sucked into the escalating conflict (PvPers dream all that fighting ).
Therefore in my mind were BOB & ASCN, or for that matter BOB & D2 or even D2 & ASCN ever to come into full blown conflict or even all out war, it wouldnt remain between them for long. The implications of one of the sides coming out as superior would be too great for the rest of the 0.0 Alliances would be too great for them to allow for 1 or the other to become such a sizeable entity.
How the new regions coming in Kali will affect the balance of power i dont know. Its been the subject of several threads already so i wont go into it. But the above is how i see things potentially happening if such a scenario were to occur in the next few months. Sorry its rather long & longwinded (think theyre two different things )

That is awesome!
Although I won't be involved in this war, I did fight in the GNW, there is one main differnce I see. The only thing about the GNW that differs from this "GSW" is that the factions involved in the GNW truely despised each other. While that may not seem like a big difference, when times get tough it makes you want to fight harder. And makes propoganda more interesting. :) (jade anyone?)
Other than that, the size of this war I believe will eclipse the GNW, especially conisdering Capital ships are now in game. The isk destroyed in this war *should* be phenomenal.
So good luck to both sides, it will definetly be interesting!

If there is a clash of the powers, you will see what happened early 2006, where all the smaller alliances took advantage. They will move in and try take some space of whom ever the attacker is.

You forgot to mention one conflict, the war of lv kos v and friends against red alliance. Having taken part in that war during spring and summer I can't really say it was all that peacefull. Many battles have been fought there in the region, with lots stations changing ownership.

Thanks for all your replies,
The post about southern stain and the news about the declerations reminded me of one of the truely bizarre but frequent occurances of war, both in RL and in EVE.
The Quiet before the storm
It is the collective holding of breath at the top of the roller coaster before it plunges downward. We all know that New Eden is just a game, but we get to know our home regions very well, even on a level of instinct. We subconciously spot signs, we know its moods, its ebbs and flows, when system X will be camped when it will be clear. It is a fascinating process to see spontanious and unbidden moments of collective change. A region suddenly becomes quiet, you notice the patterns of traffic have changed, certain groups of players are absent. It is the eve equivilant of the wild west town when the street suddenly empties to leave the combatants to slowly approach each other, hands hovering over thier pistols.
In a war sense, it is the tension in the air, the guilty anticipation of conflict, it is exciting but dreadful. Out there in the darkness massive forces are collecting, the walls are coming in and if your one of the small nations you know you could be crushed in the melee that is to come. If your an independant, pirate or freelancer, perhaps its time to leave town till the storm blows through or is this an oppurtunity, if it is, is the risk worth it.
It is for these reasons, writers and poets have gone to war, the criminals and the oppurtunists, the heros and the warriors. Is that over romantised? maybe.. but its when the war is in full brutal swing that we pay the price, its then that we discover how much we're willing to give.
May we live in interesting times.
