I'm building a t1 drone frigate ship as an experiment for ratting in low sec space. I've pretty much settled on either the Imicus or the Maulus.
Imicus has space for either 1 med drone + 1 lite drone or 3 lite drones. Maulus has space for 1 med drone or 2 lite drones. Both ships have 2 turret slots but the Maulus has 1 more hi and 1 more med. The Maulus also has 100 more shield hp and slightly more cap + speed. Which one would you recommend?
Would 1 med drone be better than 1 lite drones against most frigates?
My current Maulus is setup like so:
2 x 150mm hybrid railguns 1 x sensor dampeners 1 x afterburners 1 x shield booster 2 x power diagnostics
I have no problem in 0.0 against the slower frigate rats where I can keep outside their range and hit them with my railguns and drone them to death, but the fast frigates/interceptors close the gap wayyyy to quickly and my railguns don't have the tracking or range for frigates orbiting at 2000m. I'm tempted to try the Imicus for the greater drone firepower (most of my offensive skills are in drones) but the huge drop in shield hp makes me a little uneasy.
Any suggestions?

Erm ... I find it rather odd that you're shield tanking a Gallente ship ...
I would use an Imicus with 3 Light Drones personnaly, but I have the Drone Specialisation skills up to 4, so my Lights hit really hard, and also the Specializations for Small hybrids ...
I'll have to test that, it's been a while since I've flown my frigates

My suggestion would be to pony up for a cruiser. Arbitrators or Vexors would be much better in that role than any frigate could hope for.

But then it wouldn't be a T1 Drone Frigate experiment anymore would it?

I use an Imicus to rat around in high sec for fun once in a while.
If you're using rails you might want to put in a web to slow down the fast stuff to let your rails hit better. Also if you are using rails you are not going to want an AB to close, so put your webber there.
Armour tanking is the way to go in an Imicus, you can fit 2 100mm plates with the other gear.
Also with good drone skills the 3 small drones will tear most frig size targets to peices, no need to upgrade to a med drone. Plus the small ones are way harder for the NPCs to hit.
Let us know how it goes, I am interested to see other ways of ratting in 0.0

I'll definitely keep you updated. I'm going to try fitting out my Imicus this afternoon and give it a test later this week.

Three light drones (3*7.5=22.5), will outdamage a medium and a light (12+7.5=19.5) in all situations besides being faster and having better tracking.
I'd fly the imicus as follows: Lows: small armor repper, micro auxilliary power core Mids: AB, cap recharger highs: 2x 150mm
Or use 75mm and a micro cap battery instead of the recharger.
If you can't fit the MAPC try a civilian armor repper and PDS.

I'm currently going with an Imicus with this setup:
3x lite drones 2x 75mm carbide railguns (w/ differing ammo for various ranges) 1x shield extender 1x webber 1x 100mn armor plates 1x armor repair module
This will give me a considerable tank and let me slow down any fast moving interceptor RATS to hit with my railguns w/antimatter ammunition. I may exchange out the weber for an afterburner or move the railguns up to 125mm or 150mm depending on how this works out.
I'll keep you posted.

My imicus setup atm:
hi: - small remote armour repper - 75mm rail (can't use guns ok, stfu :P)
med: - 1mn MWD (yeah baby) - Cap recharger (need no, fun yes)
low (not entirely sure, at work atm): - SAR II - EANP II
3 light t2 dronies
Tactic: Orbit at 40-50 km doing 1.5 km/s, let drones have fun.
Base targetting range on Imicus is like 35km, with good drone and targetting skills you can stay out of range quite easily. Moving at that speed also helps. Great fun and uber cheap ;)
- All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me - Pure drone user... give us a mini carrier and faction Typhoon and Dominix please |

This configuration didn't fare too well the other night against Angels. I was able to take out three Angel destroyers in 0.3 space but the caliber of DPS of the NPC's in 0.0 space (Edinburger) simply proved to be too much for this config.
I may try using explosive hardeners for my shields/armor and/or sensor boosters and try to wear them down from long range.
The fun thing about using T1 frigates is that they're sooo inexpensive.

Actually, if you're going 'drone frigate' I'd be inclined to suggest using a microwarpdrive. The idea being you use something 'long range' to aggy the NPCs, set your drones going, and then run away and let your drones get on with it. Keep an eye on them though, so if they start taking shield damage you can recall/relaunch them.
Maybe a couple of omnidirectional tracking links, and maybe a drone link augmentor or two.
In terms of damage per m3, small drones are better than mediums are better than larges. Thus you're better off with 5 lights, than 2 mediums, 1 light, or 1 heavy drone.
They lose a bit of shield/armour, but gain in speed and tracking.

The Omnidirectional Tracking Link and other drone upgrades are hi-slot, right?
Another question: How do you determine your max drone control range?

Base range is 20km, plus 5km per level of the Scout Drones skill. --------------

The Omnidirectional Tracking Link and the Drone Navigation Computer are med slot modules, while the Drone Link Augmentor is a high slot module.
There is another skill to increase your drone control range : Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing, + 3 kms per level.
With Scout Drone Operation 5 and Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing 4, I can control all my drones up to 57 kms (and even 97 kms on my Dominix, I stuffed 2 Drone Link Augmentors in my highs).

Definitely Imicus, with 3 rat specific light drones.
High : Drone link Extender x 2 Med : Sensor booster, Drone Navigation Computer Low : Whatever, e.g. stabs or maybe Signal Amplifier for even more range.
With good mods and skills this is about 90 km both targetting range and even more drone control range.
Tactic is warp at 100km, send in the drones.
Don't get shot at ever, it definitely can't handle it. Also looting is a pain so not the most efficient money maker.

I was thinking something like this, except trade sensor booster or drone navigation computer for micro warp drive, which would make looting alot easier and let me put a gap between any rats that get over-eager.

Imicus with MWD really need a cap battery or you'll get like 20AU warping range. And even with that you won't sustain it long anyway, unless you put some cap power relay in low slots but then your drone control range will be way bigger than your locking range so the drone link extender are kinda wasted.

My drone skills not being up to the caliber required for 0.0 space, I've been doing some ratting in 0.2-0.4 space using my Imicus setup.
I've had great success in these low sec areas with the following config:
2x 75mm carbide railgun 1x small shield extender 1x webber 1x 100mm plate 1x small armor repairer 3x lite scout drones
Nothing fancy, just enough shield/armor to tank damage while I rush in and give my drones time enough to rip them apart while providing backup fire. I'm going to continue to try different configs until I find out what works best at this time.
Once I'm done with my Imicus I'll pull out the Maulus and see what it can do with the increased hi and mid slots.

An Extender and Armour Rep+Plate? I'd replace the extender with a target painter - nothing better for long range agro and it performs the double function of improving your drones' damage by mitigating tracking issues.

I've altered my config a little. I'm currently using the following:
2x 150mm railgun 1x small shield extender 1x small shield booster 2x power diagnostics units 3x lite scout drones
Mabye it's just me but I find I get better all-round damage output with my 150mm rather than 75mm railguns. It does higher damage per hit and the range is invaluable for a config like mine where I lack the speed to get in close. The ability to switch out ammo types to vary my range comes in handy; antimatter for 6km, lead for 12km and iron for 21km.
I'm primarily fighting Angels so it makes more sense to shield tank than armor tank, and 2x PDU's are necessary for the 150mm railguns high powergrid requirements.
Target painter eh? Interesting.

Edited by: Kery Nysell on 09/10/2006 14:45:59 Here's a theorical setup that I still have to test, using drones only :
HIGHs : 2 x Drone Line Augmentor
MEDs : Drone Navigation Computer + Omnidirectional Tracking Link
LOWs : Small Armor Repairer II + 200mm Plate II
Dronebay : 3 Tech 2 Light Drones of the right type for the rats
With my skills (Scout Drone Operation 5, Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing 4 and Gallente Frigate 4), that raises the control range to 116.4 kms ... way outside the Imicus locking range
It's also usable without high skills, by using tech 1 items, it comes just short of the base PG and CPU of the Imicus (19/20 and 170/230) ... and with tech 1 drones, of course ...

I'm going to try a config similiar to this eventually. I was actually going to try this earlier before I saw the going price for drone link augmentors. For some reason I couldn't stomach spending two-and-a-half times the cost of my ship on a single component.
I'm stingy.

Maulus is better because of the extra mid and low slot. Its basically impossible to put any sort of tank on the Imicus. We had a corp frigate tourny once and a lot of people used drone ships to take advantage of the damage since it was t1 vanilla mods only allowed in the tourny. With roughly equal skills, the maulus teams beat imicus teams hands down.
