It consisted of a 100 man SA fleet (Stain Alliance before the in-game alliance abilities) and another big corp (I forget the name) that had a fleet of 75 ships. These two fleets went up against a fleet of ~200 CA (Curse Alliance) ships.
What happened was the 100 man SA fleet faked like it would enter VOL- one way, but then switched and took a fast round about way via insta jumps. The other fleet then took up position where the SA fleet left. CA then put their 200 man fleet at the gate where they expected SA to jump in from. However, it was timed that both fleets entered VOL- from different directions at the same time (thanks to teamspeak and good planning). The effect was that the CA fleet suddenly had two groups of targets at two different ranges and eventually lost after a hard fought battle.
So that was about a ~400 ship fight back when CA and SA where still around and at war... (i.e.: old history for most people).
Not the biggest ever, but pretty damn big for the time and pretty sweet considering the tactical maneuvers.
(Note, the system the fight too place in might not be actually be VOL, I don't remember after all this time. It was a system in curse though)
I was on the Curse side, and the battle was in HWL, not VOL. I think the other party that fought next to SA was Atuk. Atuk jumped in from VOL and SA took the long way. It was a long and hard battle in which Curse took the most losses, but I can remember something about invisible fleets. The fleet that was not at the gate was invisible for the Curse forces around the gate or something like that. But at least the node stayed up :)
For me the biggest en most memorial battles where the ones in which Supremacy + friends invaded JQA/3FA territory in jan 2005. Several battles that lasted for hours where fought in VV-V, 250+ people participating and hundreds of ships killed (pilots from both sides grabbed new ships as soon as they could and rejoined the battle, several JQA pilots lost 4 or 5+ ships during the 4 hour long battle.).
I was also on the CA side it was the biggest pvp that i remember but defently not the most fun. I think it also proved that the CA did not have a dev lag machine as the lag hurt us more then them. As for the invisable fleets, the warp in fleet would lag more but see the whole grid whereas the CA fleet were only seeing the forces they had already loaded so random ships were exploding from unkown forces :p
