Without preamble, this link opens a holo vid: the spartan interior of a Caldari captain quarters, all cool lighting and hard angles. A couch rests in mid-frame, a table before it, and a bit forward of that, in the immediate foreground, a mound of black strands bumps quietly back and forth, with an occasional scuffing noise and beep of controls.
A time-date stamp appears, top-right, indicating YC 114, 2-14, at 0246 EVT.
After a moment, the black mound lifts and a pair of bemused black eyes in a pallid face pop up into view beneath a pair of equally-bemused black eyebrows and a shock of black hair. These back away, and first the right eyebrow lifts, then the left, and the head cocks first left, then right, in counterpoint, as elfin nose, cheeks, lips, chin, and throat (and one dainty ear) all come into view, along with the top bits of the lightly-embroidered black tunic she wears. The diminutive Achur woman frowns at the camera, black little eyes flicking back and forth around the edges of the frame.
She taps a couple of times with her fingers at the air over her left wrist, and the image immediately rotates 90 degrees clockwise, catching a long shot of herself and the room (she's also wearing black trousers, and the ceiling continues to declare the architect's deep and abiding devotion to exposed metal), dimensions resizing to fit.
She taps again, and the room is upside-down.
Frowning in irritation, she taps twice more, and the view returns to its proper orientation, though not without spending another quarter-second on edge.
Scowling, she sets herself down on the table edge and scratches her head with one hand. Her eyes drift to the upper left of the camera's view.
For a moment, she is still, frowning slightly, as though trying to make sense of a riddle. Then, her eyebrows jump two centimeters, the rest of her manages at least one, and she stares wide-eyed right at the camera. Her fingers fumble frantically at her wrist's airspace, and a few seconds later, the video ends.
The final time on the stamp is 0248 EVT. |

I think a better question is why a vid of Aria fumbling with a holo-recorder is IGS worthy.

Another holo vid, with the same view, and the same young Achur woman staring, unsmiling, at the camera. The camera zooms in sharply from the front, and that frame freezes, boxed in blue, and slides to the far right. She turns to show the left side of her face; again, the frame freezes, boxed in blue, and slides back and slightly right, lined up next to the first. The next is a shot of the back of her head, the next of the right side of her face. Both fall back and line up, providing a full array of images. These remain for three or four heartbeats, and are gone.
The camera's view is back to its original, zoomed out position. The little Achur waits a moment, then does a slow, solemn twirl.
Text appears at the bottom of the screen.
This is Aria?
The video ends. |

A bay staffer helped me to the shower, then gave a cup of tea and a message for Aria. Some men, station security, I think, brought me here, after. They locked me in these quarters.
They bring food. They don't talk, though.

There were no backups or anything? Or are they corrupted too? If that is the case then I'd suggest looking at your past that you can find and try to piece it together, also try to get in contact with your old contacts and see if they can help you piece your life back together. As far as tech manuals, I believe Rictor is right. Im assuming a lot has changed since you last flew so looking at Isis might be a good idea to get reaquainted to everything. If you really are lost on everything feel free to ask me any questions, I really don't know if I would be all that helpful but ya never know.If not, at least I can help you find the answer. |

Next, the system tried to terminate the clone, but that failed, too.
Um. It actually looks like my old contacts did this to me, and I've got people telling me I shouldn't trust anyone.
I don't know what to do.
Some things are clear, after I understand what I'm looking at. The neural shunt hasn't really changed very much; it's Jovian technology in the first place, and doesn't really get upgrades since we hardly understand it to begin with.
Please don't ask me how I know that.
I know how to work the calibrations, I think ... I could do as you suggest, Rictor, and just plug in, if I trusted the hardware, but I don't. It's like I'm being pushed toward the pod, but I don't want to just go where I'm being pushed.
It could be I really am a capsuleer. But what if I was just a capsule technician or something? I could wetgrave.
If it's true, I've seen the list.

Oh, you need an expert in brain management, because you feel a bit wary about plugging your brain into stuff that you're not entirely sure about ?
Well, lucky for you, that I happen to know all sorts of people, several of which are also capsuleers, and enjoy plugging strange devices into their brain, for Science Purposes, of course.
Why, several of them, their entire IGS career apparently consists of announcing, "HEY! Listen! Hey, guys, I found some weird alien technology, I don't know what any of it does, but I'm going to plug it into my brain!", to which the majority of commentators will respond "Don't plug it into your brain", then the plug-obsessed maniac says "TOO LATE!", and subsequently has another mental breakdown, as the alien technology attacks their fragile psyche with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer on a walnut. Then a short time later, the plugee is revived from a backup clone and announces "It's alright, I'm not dead!" and says they've found MORE SCIENCE from the escapade, which is fortunate, because they've found ANOTHER alien device, which looks like it could be plugged into a brain. WAHEY!
Don't plug strange devices that you found in mysterious shipwrecks, into your brain.
It astounds me, that people who are normally quite reasonable about not eating the contents of cans of what might be food, found in shipwrecks, at least, not without testing the contents first, show much more concern about their intestines, than they do with their brains.
Picking up random ancient implants, or possible Jovian devices, or Sleeper doodads, or Rogue Drone wibblies, and blammo, right into the brain, without even the slightest bit of testing first.
Makes you think, doesn't it ? Well, it makes me think, anyway. Can't say it makes those plugees think, given their recklessness. Although it's possible that one of these weird alien devices might actually make them think, after they've rammed it into their brain.
Anyway. Brains. You need someone to test your brain ?

Well, I wasn't referring to myself. I'm not a brainologist.
But I do know some people who are, such as my cousin, Dr. Valerie Valate. The other one. The medical doctor. I'm the archaeologist. The other one is the medical doctor.
Or you might even consider talking to Synthia, as she co-wrote that paper on Sebiestor Brains. Of course, you're not a Sebiestor.
There are some others.
And also a lot of people who'll do strange things. Like that wingnut who was dissecting live human brains, in order to "look for where consciousness is formed", or whatever silliness that was.
And those other crackpots.
Come to think of it, almost all the "scientists" on the IGS, tend towards the plugging-alien-technology-into-my-brain-to-see-what-it-does side of things, and hardly any actually bother with the slightest safety measures.

Let me think.
Um.
There's a rhythm to the systems. Thrust-beat-cloak.
In a bubble, head up or down; 'ceptors forget to search the Z-axis.
Rifter to be inconspicuous. Buzzard for probes and safety. Falcon to double as squad support at need. Tengu to evade bubbles, but you're gambling a lot.
D-scan is necessary, but not sufficient.
Comms discipline applies to everyone but fleet command and scouts. Scouts have to be heard.
If you see Ignoramous in Local, speak up. ... or you'll get a mothership dropped on your convoy.
"Ignoramous?" I don't ... the name doesn't appear in the pilot registry.

Political discord, endless wars, rampant death.
Capsuleers making a killing.
Aria Jenneth was a murderer who killed her own grandfather.
She didn't try to hide it. She was also a pirate who loved to watch habitats explode.
She blamed that on being a capsuleer. She thought being a capsuleer made her worse.
She's also a legendary philosopher, I guess. Or so people tell me.
Reading her, though, i'm pretty sure she couldn't stand herself. She hid in a labyrinth of ideas because she couldn't stand her own reflection.
She didn't want to be wise. She wanted to be safe, from her history, from the world, from consequences.
She was a hypocrite, and a sophist, and she knew it.
I hope I'm really someone honest and morally upright, like a clonejacker. |

There is no alternative. Her writings were about how different and alien capsuleers are. Her writings just fed into the delusional feelings of godhood that makes capsuleers believe they're beyond mortal concerns. Her very first writing, said in no uncertain words: "You're not human." That sentence, that one sentence, is what creates monsters.
We are humans. Just humans in a VR where we're controlling real spaceships instead of virtual ones, and where we pretend that our mortal replacements are immortal continuations. Do you feel immortal? You, more than any of us, should be able to appreciate the fact that you are a replacement, because you are absent of the memories that create the illusion of continuation. You aren't Aria Jenneth, or any of her copies, you're a new person made in her image and with her name, just as the clone after you won't be you.
As long as people keep trying to live with these delusions that we're something other than human, we'll keep spawning people who believe they can ignore human concerns.
What made your templates' writings terrible, was that they were defeatist. "You're a killer." Why? Capsuleers are not killers by nature, they're killers by choice, and by lack of the restrictions normally imposed on society that would discourage that choice. "You do not have empathy," "You do not even notice." If a capsuleer has no empathy, and does not notice, it's because they choose to have no empathy, and choose not to notice.
Becoming a monster is a choice. Your templates encouraged people to make that choice by instilling these defeatist and self-aggrandizing philosophies. Your templates said not to embrace illusions, and yet everything they wrote was the crafting of one. You yourself pointed this out.
What your templates did, was say that we are monsters who should try to be human. That is a lie. What capsuleers are are humans who all too frequently try to be monsters, and have been allowed to be by intentional removal of the chains that normally keep humans from fulfilling our darker impulses.
You're a human being. Don't ever think you're anything else. Impose whatever restrictions on yourself you need to make sure you don't choose to be anything else.
That Infomorph Psychology thing, by the way? The real name of that skill is Voluntary Suicide. There's an area where you should impose a restriction. Your templates weren't immortal, you aren't either. |

Science: Aria was a dabbler, here. The record's jagged, highs and lows all mixed in together like teeth on an old key.
Amarr Encryption, two.
Caldari Encryption, one.
Electromagnetic Physics, one.
Gallente Encryption, one.
Graviton Physics, four.
High Energy Physics, one.
And on and on. They all match.
The records ... what I can get ... show my archive was last updated 114.6.29. It's about the time Aria vanished.
There are reasons to doubt this method. The archive's corrupt; how did my skillset survive?

It is not right.
There is no death for the identity, only for the body. Continuity of data stream and thought is conserved, like with any hardscan process.
Conventional thinking based on human perception of space time continuum can not cope with the scope of multiple identities and discontinuity of thought.
Telling that someone ceases to be that someone after a hardscan, or even a delayed cloning, is nonsensical. Technically you stop being you at the next second no matter what you do. |

You don't. A copy with your memories does (or without, in this new Jenneth's case).
But as usual, capsuleers will cling to the delusion that they're immortal, and thus more special than the rest of humanity. So, forget I said anything, as it just falls on deaf ears and is drowned out by dreamers.

An emergency cloning is a violent event.
A clone jump is not. That's ... the point of it.
A jump clone permits clone retention ... all implants retained, however expensive and fragile.
Medical bay to medical bay ... no actual cloning bay even required.

A mind isn't a set pattern that ends because it changes. It isn't even software, loaded up from memory and then stashed away again.
A mind is an electrochemical dance among neurons. It reaches, touching there, there, there-- turning, sweeping, fetching, holding, leaping. It is always in motion, whether it is moving or being moved. Change defines its presence. If a mind stops ...
... maybe that's death. The living mind never truly stops, even in sleep. Even emptied in meditation, it still hears the wind whistle-- even if it lets the sound go. That clear stillness is a part of the dance, itself.
Does a mind in transition stop while the library it dances around in is boxed up and shipped to a new address?
... I guess we'd have to ask an expert.
Hm. Even if it does, that's only really profound if you believe that's when the soul packs its bags and moves to Heaven. |

It shouldn't be surprising.
Just another pile of meat.
... The transfer itself still doesn't seem all that profound, unless, again, there's really such a thing as a soul, and we each get one per biological life.
If we only get one, that first cloning is really profound; the others, not so much.

The topic is a subject of academic debate with a number of factors involved, and not an ironclad, no-grey-area reality as you are presenting it. Please remember this reality while you are making your assertions. |

Well I guess there's something to be said for starting fresh. I mean, all those capsuleers who can't cut it and just get stuck in a clone loop to enjoy the physical experiences all over again. Maybe you just decided to do the same with psychological.
Welcome back Aria. Don't limit yourself to humanity, we may be less then them, but we're something more too. And just because you're not human, doesn't mean you have to be a monster.
It's just easier that way.

Funny. I don't recall ever saying or implying I was immortal or that I was any more or less special than humanity.
For the record, I'm neither immortal or human. I might well appear to be one or the other or even both depending on the perspective of the observer. |

Oooooh dear.
Aria? Are you out there? Can you see this happening?
Are you getting a kick out of this?
Your own "reset," your maybe kinda-sorta second chance, your fledgling pod-pilot self who is not even carrying your childhood baggage, has your associates and students suggesting to her that she's not human before she's even flown a ship.
What was that about "please ignore this if it doesn't apply to you; it could cause you damage?" Where's that principle now, huh?
Three cheers for unintended consequences!
... Gentlemen, thank you for the warm wishes. I think I'm going to go fill my very human, virgin ears with plaster until l've at least flown my first hundred hours.

If you think you're still human, you haven't been paying attention to your own recent existence. You woke up after being dead. You may not be a monster like the rest of us, but at the very least you're a post-human.
But cling to what illusions you will if they comfort you, we all need our creature comforts, the beautiful thing about the vastness of space is that it doesn't really matter if we agree or not. |

I wouldn't listen too much to these arguments about immortality versus humanity, Aria.
Human, I think you've already figured out, is a state of mind. It's what kind of person you are.
I have no idea who you were before, or what kind of things you did, but if this truly is a sort of fresh start for you then I wish you well. Second chances are rare; I know that as well as anyone. Make the most of it.
Stay human, Aria. I can tell you that if you don't, you may come to regret it yourself.

Yesterday was a strange day.
It started with finally getting clearance to undock. I guess I'm not going to be shot.
That Merlin looked so huge, looming over my balcony in the station: metric tons of tritanium; blaster arrays powerful enough to slice another ship into chunks of debris; engine arrays I could have walked into. Launching ... the kick of the thrusters, the stronger push of afterburners-- it was exhilarating.
It sort of stayed ... impressive ... until I warped near the beacon at one of the "Unknown Structures."
I'm not sure my sense of scale's recovered yet.
We measured it at 196 km, antenna tip to bottom of hull, give or take a kilometer. It would ... take me a good few minutes to walk my own margin for error.
The Buzzard I switched over to to experiment with probing ... didn't seem so big anymore. Though I still feel pretty small.
The probing led to a, well, I guess "illegal" might not be the word.... A Federal Navy detention center, in Caldari space. I only saw the guard at the deadspace entry, but it was an intimidating force: Elite Navy frigates, mixed with cruisers, but the main force was a squadron of Gallente battleships, each ... I don't know how many times the size of my little cloaked frigate.
I felt very glad not to be seen.
While I was taking it all in, another pilot warped in, in an Ishtar. Chaos erupted. I thought ... I know, capsuleer, but still, he was so outnumbered, I thought ... they'd kill him for sure, but he fought his way through to the gate. The gate slung him away into the deeper reaches, and I sort of thought, how heroic, running a gauntlet like that to ... well, to rescue the prisoners, or shut the place down.
He came back a few minutes later, though, and everything just started exploding. I thought it was amazing at first, but then a companion ... reminded me what I was looking at: ships full of people exploding, crews in the tens, hundreds, or thousands, dying every minute. And ... I realized, this isn't a battle. It's a massacre.
I ... guess I must have sounded horrified, so my companion suggested we go save some lives. We ... headed out to the Caldari border with Amarr space, looking for stranded human cargo. Twenty minutes or so, and we didn't ... actually find anyone.
I'm told that this sort of mercy mission is looked down on, that it's not ... considered respectable work. And, cruel as it sounds, I can kind of see the point. We could have, at most, expected-- what, a few dozen? A couple hundred?
It seems as though we'd have had to get ... very lucky to save, in an hour, one percent of the numbers that Ishtar killed in five minutes. If we were trying to make a measurable difference, we failed, and we probably were always going to.
What's more, I got frustrated, and I started following the lines of reasoning so clearly laid out in my head. The discussion sort of ranged all over, but I didn't realize until near the end of it that I didn't care nearly as much about what I'd been saying as it sounded like I did.
I'd been ... following a script, assembling pieces of knowledge Aria had sort of pre-arranged for her own use.
Some of ... old Aria ... is beginning to make more sense now. At the same time, I don't want to just trust these ... "facts" that I remember.
They represent the world according to Aria.
Old Aria did believe in looking for the truth, but she was so partisan I have no way to distinguish between facts and "facts."
One thing is clear: if I want to be sure to become my own person, I need to be careful about debate. Old Aria loved debate, and most of the intact parts I have from her mind are intellectual knowledge-- debating material.
I can maybe trust its accuracy, but I can't ... trust its completeness. So, sifting what is true from what she believed is going to be sort of a process. But if I just trust her to have been right about things, I will end up thinking like her.
So ... I guess learning that is a start.
Time to start examining what I think I know. |

The trouble with the terms "humanity" and "personhood" is that they are made-up terms, invented and re-invented a million times over from the days of our collective cave-crawling ancestors up until the present day. As a consequence, every single person seems to have their own individual definitions of those words. This in turn means that whenever people debate what the terms actually mean, their arguments tend to be based on opinion rather than fact, making any kind of consensus extremely unlikely.
The most rational way to determine whether a given specimen or individual qualifies as human - or indeed as a specific individual - is to look at how the law defines those terms, and measure the individual in question against those standards. Although it can be argued that legal opinion is still, at the end of the day, subjective opinion itself, it is at least codified opinion - which is as good an opinion as you're ever going to get.
As a capsuleer, you are typically under CONCORD jurisdiction. From what I can tell, your identity as Aria Jenneth within the pilot registry appears to be valid. Clonejack or no, this means that until CONCORD says otherwise, I consider you the same person I used to know. And, incidentally, also human.

Welcome back, Ms. Jenneth. As for twisted morals and pseudo-ethics, I would like to wish you just to be honest to yourself and others. We are capsuleers, we are combat pilots and machines to kill people. We do our duty by fighting and killing, and this is what we must accept.
Lately, especially in this exact media, there are too many weaklings and hypocrites, mostly caused by annoying gallente propaganda, who twist morals and ethics and scream a lot about "killing innocents", while with other hand sending thousands into oblivion, or those, who can't accept killing of hundreds in order to save thousands.
Be honest about what you do and why you do. And don't afraid to push the trigger when your duty calls for it. |
