I'm on my 3rd day of the 14 day trial and very impressed with the game. I'm finding the wonderful people in the Rookie Help Channel very helpful and polite.
However, This morning I was solo mining in Cistuvaert 1 and saw another ship out there, as I travelled back and forth it was still there so I thought I would say hello, like you do. Nothing happened for a while, but then I got a message to say the Pilot had blocked me and there would be no further communication! Not very friendly really.

eve is like real-life in the aspect of diversity amongst the players. Not everyone is friendly (definitly not everyone!!). There are however, lots of people that would be willing to chat/mine/rat with you if you ask them. Embrace the grumpy people as well as the friendlies and you'll have a good time here. (or just shoot the grumpy people like i do, and have a good time+cash)

Well, in any mmo universe there will be players like this.
No real reason to get dissapointed imo.
Also, from what ive read (im also a newbee) you shouldnt adress everyone: you never know who¦s attention you might draw - you could end up podding happily through space.

As the saying goes it takes all kinds, maybe they were just haing a bad day. You will find there are many paths to this game and a lot to understand - ask in the help channels or other players - right click a lot also. A lot of the trail accounts are used for odd puroposes like spamming isk selling websites so they may have just blocked your conversation due to your 'Eve Age'. Try using local instead of starting a conversation, fly safe..

Don't worry about it. I would like to think that most of the citizens of Eve are willing to hold a decent conversation, and would be willing to answer questions. Just because one person is like that, doesn't mean everyone is.

something also to consider, the pilot that blocked you might not speak english. I know that some non english speakers/typers do this just to avoid language barrier issues.

lol...this is a good ?...i also seen a massive ship and when i went to talk to him he blocked me...But i thought cool when i become a big player i allso can be BOSS...lol. I like it.Anyway i was mining the other day and this guy said to me Hi,and so i checked him out to make sure he couldent hurt me, then i said go away dont bother me...lol.Iv been ya 2 weeks now and i cant wait to get a ship to sort some people out....lol i luv it.Eve is cool coz i like mining and im a loner

Thanks for the replies everyone, I just thought it was odd that the very first person I tried to converse with in space blocked me.
However, the second one I spoke to held a short conversation with me so I am happy.
I guess you have to be a bit careful with whom you try to make friends with.

i'm normally very friendly but sometimes i'll get a convo at just the wrong moment and i'll bite their heads off in some sort of blind rage.
I guess a lot of people are like that.
Be careful talking to TOO many people though, you don't want to get a name as some sort of spy or something.

something like that happened to me the other day, I was doing a litte archaeology and was happily pootling my way through the area scanning things as I go. I noticed these frigates zoomingaround but didn't think much of it.
Turns out that they were doing the area as a group and i'd barged in, nicked all the good stuff (Sleeper tech skill book) and was about to leave.
One of the guys said some nasty stuff to me in local and I suddenly realised what i'd done! I apologised and jettisoned the book for him and then we were all quite friendly, we helped eachother for a while until I had to leave.
So yeah.. he was a good guy who I annoyed..guess you never can tell.

There are special constellations called "COSMOS" constellations, in these places there are agents and special locations for doing hacking and Archaeology, both of which are useless outside of these areas.

There've been quite a few cross-overs from other MMO's, the general consensus being that eve has a more mature and friendly community (well, untill you find the "corps/alliances discussion forum", but its good fun  )
anyhow... some corporations would definately be screaming out for guy/gals like yourself, HIVE certainly is

You should have locked and killed him for not talking to you, the unfriendly bastard. Your disappointment would be instantly replaced with an adrenalin rush of satisfaction as Mr. Grumpy's pod flees in horror.
Er....You'll also get a visit from Concord, but hey, screw people that won't chat.

I don't block, but I often ignore a convo from someone I don't know, for a couple reasons. First, I used to get a lot of scammers convoing me asking for money. I don't mind helping people out, but it gets old. Second, the rest of the convos I got were just people saying 'oops, sorry, hit the wrong button, meant to show info'. No problem, if they really want to talk to me, they'll send me an evemail or convo me a second time.
Also, I'm afk a lot, and when I come back, I'll have a convo request open, and I'll have absolutely no idea how long it's been there, so I ignore those a lot too.
