What you plan on doing is about right, but it's also about how we compare between an alt and a main, I mean define an alt, I believe it's an alternative character totally separate from your main, how it's used is down to the individual, how people view the use of alts is open to opinion, there are many different uses for them, some can be defined as questionable, I see it as a bit of diversity from my original main, or to be honest, a change of scene to do something different with my gaming experience.
I have multiple characters, but I don't regard them as alts, each one has there own personality and as an experienced role player, each one has there own traits, one is an industrialist, one is a pve/pvp combateer, and another is a scientist/researcher.
Ok granted on some occassions each of these characters can show traits of the others by certain ways you type in convo, plus on teamspeak you could try and change your voice but you cant, its like many males players do have female avatars, and that topic has been covered somewhere here on the forums  .
So yes create different characters to suit your gaming needs, after all its your world, what you do in it is up to you.

This is definitely an idea that I toyed around with in my head. An All-in-One character risks alot of skillpoints insurance when he goes out pvp-ing. All those points in science, industry, etc don't serve much purpose in combat but end up being costly if you have to replace your clone. Using alts to separate out the various "fields" of skillpoints help to keep PVP costs down.
Of course, the learning skills throw a small wrench into that plan. =)

Ah, erm, yes. Very good point mate, I hadn't thought of that. Another two months and some ISK to get the second char up to speed. I couldn't bear trying to get a skill up to level 5 with a basic uneducated character,
Still, the Brutor manage to learn stuff so I guess anything is possible!

I have had great use of all my 3 characters slots.
Over the years a have developed all of them to different tasks. I do not care about huge ammounts of skillpoints on one char, nor can I be bothered to spend cash on more than one account.
Tomorrow my char in the third slot will be flying HAC's.

- Secondary alt Jita based full time to get the usual Empire market's prices
For your question, yes you can transfer stuff from your main to an alt, with the Escrow system, or if you're in a corp, using a "full access" corp hangar.
