Heya,
Since we get 3 slots per account I was thinking on what would be best to create for each slot.
I was thinking: 1 combat oriented char, 1 trader type char and one science/research type of char. But what i wonder is: can goods be transferred between chars on the same account?

As I have only one life, I've decided to have only ONE character, this one. If you have time to fully develop 3 EVE characters you havent: - a wife/gf/husband/bf - a job

The problem is you can only train one at a time. Still you can get some good benefits out of them.
I have 3 characters on this account.
I trained one of them up just enough to help with trade and research, took only a couple days.
The other one is just a character with not much skills, I use them to check the market prices in another area :).

you can only train 1 char per account at a time. if you really want another char that can do anything you'd have to get a second account.

Pricechecking is very useful - have alts in different regions, log them on to see what prices for things you want to buy or sell are on the other side of the universe

Got 3 Accounts and characters...AND a job..AND a wife...AND a life outside eve too.
I have a Main Combat character, a Miner/Builder/Science type and a sexy Achura who is almost done training for interdictors and will be my small ship/covops specialist when she is done. On one of the accounts is a guy who can haul for me in empire too but he is not going to be trained up any further. Beond that I have severalo disposable alt spies and scouts filling up the empty slots. In a few months I will be using the slots to train cyno alts
Dont ever think I am the only one, there are guys out there with 6 or more seperate accounts, Gospel!

The 2 other chars aren't meant to be actually played since you can't train at the same time. And that's not about to change as more then 1 account is a big source of CCP income, and it boosts their subscriber figures too.
They're used for: forum posting, scouting/spying/exploring places where your main dosen't want to go in noob ships, checking prices, or in case you want to reroll you can just retire the old one without actually deleting it..
To be honest i'd really like to see a compromise for training on more then 1 char on our account. Not training skills as if they were seperate but increase training time proportional to the number of chars that are training at that time. If i train 3 skills on 3 chars, my SPs are coming at 1/3 rate. This way i would still use the same longer time to train my chars if i choose to play more then 1, but i wouldn't have to deal with the hassle of logging in on one char, deciding i want to train something, quiting the game (LOGOUT plz!), loging on my other char, stoping training, quiting, loging on my first char, starting a skill. And this every single skill.

Well I got my original character that I once tought I had broken !!!, long story short, I shot Concord when I undocked the very first time... got killed alot of times and tought I had broken the character.
Made a new character named with a number 2 on the end, after a while I just have got too many skillpoints to swap LOL
Anyway, this character does it all, got 33 million skillpoints, some combatpoints, industry, science and trader.
If I where to start today with the knowledge I got now I would have made one combat/mission/pvp character, one Industrial character (Trader, mining and producing), and one science character...
Truth is that now a clone starts to cost quite abit everytime I get podded (no I don't get podded often), it is not the cost of implants that bugs me now if I get killed because I don't carry implants but the cost of the clone. If I could get the skillpoints from my industrial and science part over to a new character it would probably half my cost of a new clone
That would be the benefits of having divided characters up like that, on the other hand, I don't need to log in different characters to do stuff !!!!

Edited by: R3dSh1ft on 06/10/2006 10:42:53 I'm a jack of all trades, i don't use alts because:
1. If you have 2 accts ur not playing a game ur working a job. 2. Doubling up on training for common skills (engineering, learning etc.) just does not appeal. 3. IMHO its not in the spirit in which the game was designed. 4. If you have a good corp and alliance like mine, you don't need alts, just friends. ______________________________________

Wow lots of replies in such short notice - quite the active player base EVE has. Thanks for all info!
Btw: I have a Job, I run a good social life, me and the lady have plans for marriage and yes, I still like to play several chars simply becouse I have the option.
I think Arcticblue2 comes closest to what I meant by usefulness for alts. One for Combat/Pvp One for Mining/Trade/Producing One for Science.
Ofcourse ill spend lots of time developing my initial character and gaining game knowledge, but for future alts I knwo what I need now.
One question remains tho: can i swap items and stuff between chars?

Yes, use the escrow system. Escrow items from one character to the other but remember to restrict the escrow by character name. Can I also suggest that you never escrow things to your alts at 0.0 isk cost? If you forget to put the pilot name restriction in then 0.0 isk escrows get snapped up *instantly* by all the illegal escrow bots that cheats use.
You can give money directly to your alts - add them to your buddy list to make it easier.
All that said however I would strongly suggest you only develop one character on your account. Your ability to fly ships and use modules in EVE depends on your skill training and you can only have 1 character training at a time. If you play for a year but split your training between 3 different characters then you'll end up with 3 rubbish characters instead of 1 useful one.

Yes, you can trade goods between chars on the same account.
What you *can't* do is train more than one character at once. That's right, if one character is training, the others can't. This means you can only have one real character on an account. The other two are generally used for various scouting and utility purposes and never train.

Yes, you can. But you're still not appreciating the difficulty here, that you can only train one character at a time on an account. *You can't have three real characters on one account.* In order to advance, a character has to train *all the time*. If you want three characters pursuing professions, you're going to need three accounts.

There is some use to having more chars on an account.
Im over a year old and a fairly profficient combat pilot (skills at least).
The stuff I want to train will take a month +. Putting a month into a 2nd character on the account for things like trade would be fairly helpful, esp. if you tailor the attributes to the task.
I think Ill do a trader and station it at my empire base at torrinos, so that I can maintain my market.
thanks for the idea! ---------------------------------------- Friends Forever

one for a main character, one for when you want a change of pace (am I the only person who enjoys creating and training up a character for the first million or two SP?), and the last either empty, or a market spotter. that's all that's needed. there's no reason a main can't be both a combat character *and* a trader, after all.

1 account, 3 chars - train alt up for R&D and or laboratory slots - alt in Jita or other major markets to log out and doing transactions - High trade alt to give you more selling slots
But as said by others, since you can only train one, it's not realistic unles syou train up in hunting and buy a miner toon and transfer it in

The main reason I can see for using the three slots is to keep clone costs down.
I've got 24 mill SPs and that means lots of money if I get podded.
If I had my time again I'd probably have made Slaaght combat only, and another char my refiner, hauler and researcher.
