I've been holding off on getting a battleship till i had the appropriate skills to fly it and now that I can get one and use it effectively, I can't decide between a Dominix & a Megathron and was hoping to get input from anyone that has flown both
i like the Domi for the drone bonuses (being Gallente I lurve my drones) but the Mega seems to be a much bigger, sturdier ship that might be better as an all-rounder
can anyone give me some good advice based on their own experiences?
thanks in advance

I use a domi very often. Its a very flexible ship, which can be fitted very cheap and effective for nearly every purpose.
The only situation i would prefer the mega, are sniping , closerange blasteraction (although you can set up the domi for that too) and mining in groups where another mate does the tanking.
If you play straight gallente you might want to push your drone skills anyway, and the domi will fullfill all your needs.

Put it this way - Dominix : Low SP, High versatility Megathron : High SP, High skill
If you're just getting into battleships, get a dominix. Unless you really really want a megathron ---------------------------

The Domi has an extra mid slot to help with tanking (cap recharger) and can depend mostly on its drones for damage. You have room then for a couple nosses in your high slot in case you need more cap to run repairers.
The Mega's tanking ability is much thinner. Bigger is not always better, unfortunately.

I flew a mega before the Domi.. and now i realize i coulda saved 40mil if.. well heck i woulda saved 100 mill if i would have just gone straight for the Domi. If nothing else, the Domi is an Awsome stepping stone.. and for some, it's more like a stepping platue, cuase once your in one the mega doesn't seem all that apealing.
And i'm not saying a mega can't kill a Domi, but Domi's are almost never an easy take down (1 on 1). And most of the time, i think the Mega pilot is gunna be callin' up his insuance company :)
Though, i'm not even sure if your coming from a PvP perspective.
Oh! And not only can the Domi lay a serious smack down, it's also an awsome support ship... heck, there is SOOO much a domi can do.. I can't even.. i can't.. *umph*

Dominix first.
Megathron second.

I'd recommend the Domi. The Megathron has higher base HP, but a Dominix can tank better and still do damage. You can even use guns on it in addtion to the drones (yeah, shocking ). It's more versatile and it costs less while still being very effective.
The only problem is it looks like a giant potato/turd/doorstop.

odd that a lot of people responded, but very few actually asked the important questions. Where do your skills lie? Do you have a lot of turret skills or a lot of drone skills? what are your tanking/electronics skills like?
If you have a ton of drone skills, get into the domi and stay in it, the mega will be useless to you if you're a drone fighter.
If you have a lot of turret skills, then hop into the mega (but i'm talking a lot).
Another thing to consider is how many of these types of skills you have and what you plan to do. If you're looking to get into a BS to run lvl 3 and lvl 4 missions, you'll need to figure out a good tank that'll fit your play style (be it with drones or turrets), and one you can sustain. for instance, for lvl 3 missions, you're going to want 1 LAR, and 4 hardeners. Now with both ships, that leaves you with two low slots to spare, and 4/5 mids (not touching the highs). to sustain your tank, most people will fill one of those extra lows with a cap power relay, and all the mids with cap rechargers. for level 3's you can put an extra cpr down low to fill your last low slot and that should put up a good enough tank on both ships, however, if you want to run lvl 4's you're going to need/want 2 LARII's down low, which gets rid of one of your CPR's. so here is where your skills come into play. without energy management and energy systems operation to 5 to even think about sustaining your tank, still keeping your mids full of CRP's (or cpr 2's as you should have for lvl 4's).
getting back to your above question, now that you have your lows and mids full to keep your tank sustained, you have very little room for damage mods (and by very little, i mean none). So to do your damage with turrets, you're going to need at least 2-3 mil in gunnery skills. to do an equal amount of damage with drones, you're going to need around 1.5-3 mil in drone skills. so.. if you have the drone skills, go with a domi, if you have gunnery skills, go with the mega

I agree with everything Lefthammier just said. The only thing I would add is that I noticed you're an intaki. Intakis tend to have high memory and low perception attributes. This makes you more adept at learning drone skills (memory primary) than Gunnery (perception primary). So if you dont have all the skills now (2 million or so in either gunnery or drones), you could achieve an effective setup faster by going domi.
I know this from experience, as I am also an intaki and, as it happens, a domi pilot. I love my domi. While I have some problems in 2v1 (me being solo),I am VERY effective 1v1. A often dual my corp mates who have highly trained ravens and megas (t2 cruise missiles and t2 neutron blasters respectively), and win most of the time. I can tank 60,000HP in the first minute of combat and plenty thereafter. I use my 3 of my 5 midslots for EW which gives me a big ace in the hole. 2 heavy nos in the highs give me a bonus and my opponent a penalty. With t2 ogres and drone interfacing 5, i can do upwards of 400dps. That's not as much as a blastermega, but I can last longer in a fight and therefore do as much or more damage overtime.
Lastly, I will second anyone who said the domi was a versitle ship. One of my setups allows up to have a lesser tank (30,00 HP in the first minute), but hit 300-400 dps from 15-140KM range. I have another setup that allows my to tank upwards of 100,000 HP in the first minute (not much thereafter, however), but serve as a very effective fleet support ship (baiting, tanking sentries, scram, logistics drones, etc).
So if you haven't already made your decision, I hope this helps.

Dominix - The dominix is the ship that requires lower SP to be effective versus the megathron. It's very versitile, quite easy to fit, and the better option in PVE, and probably the better option in PVP unless you're experienced with the megathron, in fact it's so good it's the "i-win button."
Megathron - I won't even touch this ship with my SP until I get Tech II Hybrids, the Tech II Ammo changes have made this ship nigh impossible to use effectively without Tech II ammo (yay CCP ). The megathron pretty has two roles, sniping out far with Spike L, or being a close range damage dealer (blasterthron). Thus, it's more suited to the extremes of range, and if you're going to be using it as a blasterthron, well, prepare to have a hard time finding a fitting that works, and an even harder time on actual combat when things don't fall under the perfect conditions.

The Dominix is good - but its "i-win button" status is sorely overrated unless you use ECM.
I suppose what I'm saying is that ECM is the "i-win button"; not the Dominix.

Megathron is the ship for high skillpoint players with lots of pvp experience, and everyone here is talking about tanking. The megathron if fitted correctly doesnt need a great tank, its a damage dealing ship, and not enough people use it for that purpose.
Dominix is the better option for someone new to a battleship, but imo you SHOULD be aiming for a megathron long term, the more skilled pilot uses it and trust me its way more fun.
You dont need 40m SP... it depends on what you've trained ur character, you can be good in a mega if uve got 15 mil sp, aslong as your specific for that race and ship.

For PvE I prefer a Domi to a Mega.
On the other hand, I prefer a typhoon to either. I can run a LAR full time on one, can't do that on a domi.

depends on skill and fittings, my PVP setup domi can run a lrg rep2 till downtime, without use of nos or the cap injector my pve setup one runs 2 from uptime till downtime(I ran it afk for about 3hrs in 0.0, tanking a spawn, corpmate as gang leader and enough safespots that if anyone showed it wouldn't have been probe-able anyway)
domi is an awsome ship, it works well with low skillpoints, and becomes an awsome monster with lots of SP 20m sp, and i'd take a domi over a mega any day of the week, but maybe because ~5m of those sp are drones, and ~5m more are spaceship command(heavy 5, di5, racial drones 4, gall bs 5 completes late sunday), and only about 1.5m are in gunnery

Now i only have 4.5 million skill points at the moment but i'm finding the Domi very good.
What might be worth mentioning also for mission running is the cost of maintenance of a domi is zero. Apart from the odd lost drone here and there if you do the old NOS/drone you can fly through the missions easily and not use any ammo etc.
Obviously this depends on your personal finances, but if you are a bit strapped for cash may be worth considering. --------------------------------------

why on earth would people who havn't flown these ships even bother commenting on which is better? a lot of things may look better on paper but work crappy in combat situations.
and as far as drones bieng 'bugged', i don't have any idea what you're talking about. i don't have a single turret on my ship (so you could say that i do my damage with drones :P ) and i've never had a problem. i think the real issue is that a lot of people just want to send their drones out and sit back and drink a soda or something while their drones magically do what you think they should and that's just not the case. you need to manage your drones like you would your guns. target what you want to attack, pull aggro, and then tell your drones what to do. don't just send them out and HOPE they kill what you want them to. then after that dies, TELL THEM to kill the next thing, don't let them fly around randomly.

if you can't run your tank on ANY ship, you either don't have the skills to be in it, or you have it setup wrong.
it's VERY easy to run a LAR (or in my case, 2 LAR's) constantly in a domi if you have only a couple skills to 4 and CR II's (that's for mission setup of corse)

I rat exclusively in a Dominix, and it can handle officer spawns in my config.
Whats nice is that same exact config can also handle ANY solo raider ship attacking me. ANY. I have yet to have a single solo pirate kill me.
For Sansha ratting where I am.
Highs: 3 x E500 Nosferatu 2 x Heavy Anode Pulse Particle Stream I 1 x Small Tractor Beam I Mids: 1 x LiF fueled Booster Rockets 1 x ECM Multispectral II 3 x fb10 Cap Rechargers Lows: 1 x Large Armor Repairer II 1 x EM Armor Hardener II 1 x Thermal Armor Hardener II 2 x Energzied Adaptive Nano Membrane II 1 x F85 Peripheral Damage Control 1 x Type-D Cap Power Relay Drones: 5 x Ogre II 5 x Valkyrie II 5 x Warrior II 5 x Medium Shield Maintenance Bot I 5 x Heavy Armor Maintenance Bot I
(Logistics drones support my alliance mates in the belts when they get attacked by the solo-raiders that leave me be)
With 5 Ogre II I have been ratting faster over time than any ammo using ship, short of a high SP Armageddon. The fact that I never have to use ammo means I have a 600m3 cargo bay used to store loot and I go to the giant cans less to drop off the loot. (Little secret - Keep all the loot from Sansha's, 5 Giant Cans worth repro into over 150mil worth of minerals at alliance prices, closer to 250 at empire prices.) That can put your ISK/hr income better than Ark mining in a barge.

Most valid points raised allready...
I can only add this:
Assuming high SP Mega is for Fleet and for Solo whereas Domi is more of a multitask thingy ... Blasterthron is only good 1v1 or 1v2 if you are uber. If you try say 4v4 in a Megathrons and you have the one team fitting rails and the other team fitting blasters the rail team will probably clinch it... sad but true.
If you chose Domi dont miss the opportunity to EW it up and go for NOS set up unless if in large gang (in which case you might want to try 250IIs and armor tank or dual250IIs and shield tank)...

I have both. I use the mega for special occasions (sniping with rails, or close range massive damage with blasters). I use the Domi for everything else. Domi is the better all-around ship because of the drone bay and bonuses.

I can field a fully t2 equipped mega in either blaster or rail configuration. I still think Domi is the better "all-around" ship. Sure, mega can wtfpwn in the right circumstances, but Domi is more versatile, allowing you to be victorious in a wider range of engagements.

Over 100k the mega is better because it snipes more effectively.
Under 100k the domi is better because its an ecm boat.
