the main reason people currently have lag is not because of the amount of ships on your screen (unless you got a bad graphics card that is)
but mainly because of weapon tracing and hitlocators on ships.
in short, if you fire a a ship the laser, blaster, railgun (whatever) locks and fires on a sertain point on the ships hull, as many of us know there are several of these points located on a ship. however, this does mean that eve will have to reset its locator every time the enemy ship makes a turn or something is destroyed ext.
This causes quite some overhead, In a 1 on 1 you won't notice it. However it really becomes apperent when you have 100 ships shooting at 100 ships and vice versa, cause each beam from each turret from each ship to each ship is calculated by YOUR computer. and this causes a LOT of calculations, cached memory, memory that has to be dumped ext.
CCP has allready come up with a way to adress this problem (last year) however for some reason it hasn't been implimented in the game yet.
they just make sure your computer doesn't render the hitlocations when you can't see them (not watching at or to far away from) the beams will then just fire at the RootBone (main center) of the ship.
on the last fanfest they adressed this and shown a live fight done by the CPU with about 200+ ships fireing at one another. a huge blazing gunbattle with no lag
(and that was running on a pretty common pc, they gave the specs)
Now to get to the point of pod drones... to me it sounds like something that would have no use whatsoever. technicly they are guns that autotarget (with the inteligence of the reguliar drones i'm not to sure about this working as you invision it AT ALL) they get damaged :S they are mounted on your ship (mmmh sentry drones mounted on my ship... wait a second those are called TURRETS !!!)
to me its a rather useless Idea... besides since they would be mounted on the ship they will react to EW with the ship (no use)
and the Term DRONE means: self-controlled non attached vehicle. your thing may be self controlled but isn't a drone at all cause its still attached to the ship. therefor its more like a stuborn gun with downsides (self-inflicted damage).
I'd think this over with a good cup of coffie mate :D
