Since this is directed at a quote from me, I'll reply.
Ell is a specialized character, I joined Eve because of PVP and from the tutorial forward I trained learning and combat skills with him. A little study of the skill system and study of tactics, fittings, and recruiting needs on the forums told me I could play with the big boys at relatively low SP if I had a good plan and focused my training on certain areas.
I went a different route than most, I ignored battleships entirely until very recently. I trained to very good Gallente T1 frig skills, then went T1 Frig -> Interceptor -> Assault Frig because it was a logical progression to me. It allowed me to skill rather densely because I wasn't always rushing around to fly the next biggest toy. I took a few side trips in my training when situations dicated it was to my advantage, but overall I stayed (and stay) pretty focused.
When I wanted to begin to diversify the stable of ships I could fly, the core fitting skills were already trained to 4 or 5 and had been for some time, so it did not take long at all to develop decent shield tank and missle skills when I decided a Ferox would be good for L3 missions. I can run L4s nicely in a Domi, not as good as the high end Raven pilots but good enough to keep ISK flowing when I need to.
As far as diversity in my skill set. Mining and trade are as exciting to me as watching paint dry. I have a decent little fleet of ships to absorb losses, I'm in a good but small corp and I have ISK in the bank. Most importantly, I'm happy with my character and where he is in the game relative to both newer and older Eve players.
In short, I made a choice not to whine about how unfair the world is, instead I chose to study it and learn to live in it.

Seriously that's what bothers me personally, I want to be able to play all areas of the game and have a specialized route on each of them... We're talking 5 years that way... 5 years before you can test most of the content, not because of the enormous amount of content by due to the restrictive nature of the Skill system and it with Kali 1 it will only get worse. 16.5 years to be a specialist at everything (using +5 implants and maxed learning skills all the way), that's without the new skills which are being put in patch after patch.
On average a player stays for 7 months Oveur says...
It just doesn't add up, you create a game for it to be played and yet you put a leveling mechanism in place that shuts most of the player base out from using it.
i think you are trying a wrong approach - i'd rather see EVE's skill system something like the following - you choose your race and bloodline ... you gain a bit of advantage using the ships of your race (starting with racial frig lvl1-4 and so on) ... but then you have the chance to invest time to get access to all the different ships - it's not like everyone should be able to fly every ship .. it's more like - focus yourself on the things you want
and don't forget - being able to fly a certain ship should never be the goal in itself (it's not rewarding) ... but having fun while flying and mastering it should be the goal.
to clarify it a bit - i got now 12mio sp (around 10month in the game)... i can fly all t1 frigs and 3 different racial cruisers and gallente t2 frigs - but do i use them all? no ... since 6 month i fly exclusivly taranis (though on few occassions i was flying something else - i always came back to my lovely taranis) - and i'm happy with it. why? it doesn't matter how many ships i can possibly fly, if i suck with every those ships. i prefer to master one ship as good as possible - and the knowledge that 99% of the people who can fly "my" ship will die to me is really rewarding.

My sympathy is with his family.
However, he may be the best player in Eve from beyond the grave
