I would like longer ship names too. My Raven is P.D.C.L., because I couldn't fit Post Dated Cheque Loan (due to the huge amounts of isk I owed out, that the ship was to (and has) earned and payed off).
Some of Reynolds ship names were quite cool too. Will have to check out Banks though. What's a good one to start with?

Of all the great Iain m. Banks ship names, 'frank exchange of views' was the best fighting ship name.
'Grey area' is in second place

Iain is great when it comes to names 
And i will add my vote to the longer ship name thing, will save me from having to rethink names.
Now i'm stuck with short stuff like, not invented here or drama queen..

Excession is good. So is Look to Windward. But imo Consider Phleabas should be read 1st :)
I agree on your choice of first IMB book to read, but his two greatest works are 'Use of Weapons' and Player of Games' in that order.
'Use of Weapons' is probably the finest sci-fi novel I have ever read, and I've read most authors in the genre. Frank Herbert is probably the only writer who can stand shoulder to shoulder with IMB for imagination and literary ability.

While we're at it..I'd like to be able to set the overview to show ship names rather than player names. I understand that would open a person up to being fooled by someone using ship naming to try to trick you - but I like the immersion of it. I'd much rather know that the Nostromo is on approach rather than who's piloting it!

A great ship from a great film.
Unfortunately the source isn't great. If you ever read the novel, make sure you aren't standing up or you may hurt yourself when you fall asleep.
I keep a copy of 'nostromo' next to my bed in case I can't get to sleep at night - joseph Conrad is the most boring author of all time. 20 pages describing a boring scene, 1 sentence of dialogue, another 20 pages describing the same scene etc.,. I started reading Nostromo about 20 years ago and have never got beyond halfway - still don't really know wtf its about

Their ship names are probably stored as the type with a 25 character limit, making increasing it need a lot of database-mucking to do. I guess Valar could clear that up.

Yeah it's a funny restriction too. As if you make active a ship with a long name plus the players name it will be longer than the current player allowable maximum name.
So it's not a display or database issue, 'cause it's possible now to have a default name longer.

yea, its not a hard limit, every one of my ships exceeds what it allows you to type manually. Its frustrating, sometimes I want to rename my curse to be my arbitrator, but after deleting curse, I cannot type anything. 
My RL friend was able to rename his harpy to be his merlin, and he gets all sorts of free kills because of it 
but cooler names is more fun also.

i started to make a list of all the shipnames i wanted to use and forgot to log in. been sat on the login screen for about 3 hours
and now i've just realised i can't really be bother to type up the names out of my notebook....

I seem to remember an option in the overview settings where you could turn on the shipname. but that only worked when you hovered the cursor over it.

Totally agree, longer ship names would be great. So good to see that there are other proud fans of Mr Banks. So far my ships have been called:
ROU Killing Time (Punisher)
ROU PassiveAgressive (Coercer)
ROU Pretty Penny (Omen, my tractor beam can collecter, should rename to VFP I think)
ROU Saving Face (Maller)
ROU Heavy Petting (Prophecy)
Still thinking about what to call my BS when I can finally afford one. I've stuck to ROU's so far as it seemed to fit, if I should ever get so far as a carrier I might use LSV.
I also agree the book Consider Phlebas as the best place to start in the Culture novels, it's a great read. Top of my list though Use of Weapons and Excession are neck and neck. Don't forget his fiction though, those are excellent too.
Still haven't cound a corp called 'Special Circumstances', might have to start that one up myself...

Speaking of Mr Banks, I was very un-original on my character name. Consider Phlebas was his first book and a great starting point, but Excession, Use of Weapons and Player of games are the best (not that any are bad)
Some ship names of the top of my head
Tranis - Killing time
Dominix - Grey Area
Brutix - Gunboat diplomat
Thorax - Attitute Adjustor
Occator - Yawning Angel
Viator - Sleeper service
Megathron - Limiting factor
etc etc
But yes, please give us longer names.

Hot Needle of Inquiry (already in use, a Tristan)
Lying Bastard (ideal for a battle indy if I ever set one up)
Lazy Eight I (write an 8 on its side)
Slower than Infinity
Long Shot (maybe some sort of scouting ship?)

yes, but they will be shorter. the whole point of this thread is so we can have longer shipnames. can spam reduction is a happy byproduct .

There used to be a corp called Contact Special Circumstances (ticker: CONSC). They kind of drifted apart though. which was a shame.
