Is there a thread giving an outline of the differences between the races' carriers and motherships? Is one race generally considered "better" for this class of ship then the others? Eve-search didn't bring anything up and I'm sure this has been covered.

Define better.
Gal carriers get best DPS and biggest drone bay. Caldari and Amarr have uber tanks, and minnie are POS fixers.

I wouldnt say the Thanatos is totaly unsexy, it kind of looks like a paddle to me

It really depends on the purpose. For a general purpose carrier/mothership, I would have to say the Gallente ones are the best because of the fighter damage bonus. This is useful in pretty much every combat situation, whereas the other carrier/motherships' bonuses aren't useful for sitting in a safespot with fighters assigned to allied interceptors.
The minmatar bonus is bad because it reduces cycle time instead of cap useage, meaning that a lot of micromanaging would need to be done in order to make it useful.

They all have their uses, though tanking is not that great of a feature if you're sitting inside a POS.
