Anyone else find it just downright annoying/illogical that they're losing TONS of time to skill training because they have to have the eve client open to change skills? Wouldn't it just be downright brilliant to create a Java-script on this website to let us connect to the eve website and quickly update our skill training list or something? I mean people would still have to have an active account to change skill training, and it wouldn't be so #$## annoying. Skills end in the middle of the night or early morning quite often, but I have only 1/2 hour every morning free, which just happens to be the same 1/2 hour of the morning downtime. Just be soo much easier to hit the forums and quickly change it at the college or work.

Edited by: Ethidium Bromide on 11/10/2006 14:19:00 some people hate getting up during the night to set a skill as much as you...
so we change to another skill that takes longer
EDIT: yes, that would be awesome to have an option like that though as i would not have to worry about skills finishing when i'm at work hoestly i don't care anyway, an hour more or less...

Yeah, I concur. I actually tried some "wardriving" this morning after dropping my daughter off to try and set some training points, but had to bail after a few failed attempts to find an open wireless and head to work.
I'd pay an extra buck or two a month to access this feature from the web, to be honest.

Edited by: Emily Spankratchet on 11/10/2006 14:21:15 The Devs have often said that they want people to log in to the game to change skills. However, the drawing board section of the patch notes mentions the possibility of a skill queue. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to be developed, it'll probably be here SoonÖ.
Tools like Evemon make it very easy to plan skill training. I rarely miss time training unless I just can't be bothered to log on.
Edit: Oh, and I forgot the eve mobile client for Windows PDAs that's in development. That will allow skill training, AFAIK.

set short skill to train whilst online.
cant finish short skill? set to a long one and come back later.
It pays dividends to partially train skills in this fashion, since you essentially dont lose potential SP training time in the first place.

The thing is i only get 6 hours on many days between when i'm open to play eve after. If i did that i'd only be able to train 6 hours at a time, and what if i want to train the next skill level afterwards

Heh, enjoy it while it lasts.
When you've been playing for a while, you get to the point, like me, where pretty much every skill you want takes at least a week and a half.

Edited by: DubanFP on 11/10/2006 14:29:40 I do as you guys suggest a lot, but i mean this is the 3rd time in 2 weeks when i've been stuck with 18 hours skill training. if i did it without losing time, it would take me 3 days to train that 18 hour skill. And the main other skill i want to train is the next level of that same stupid skill. It's just a pain in the @#$#@. mostly with skill training times of 3-6 days

The thing with the skill queue, is that it is very specific.
You can only train a short skill, and queue a long one. So you couldnt train say 5 level 1's you have sitting in your Items. You could train 1 of them in 20 mins, then you could queue a 5+ day.

Just be lucky you don't have to grind to get those skills!
CCP hvae talked about releasing a windows mobile client for phones that would allow users to change skills and do market stuff on the go.

hehe. gotta love the skill training dilemna. Finish a skill quick, but lose out on training time because it finishes at an odd time, or start on another long skill, and leave that partial skill until you can come home and monitor it.
If this bugs you that much, I think you need to learn to relax... Sometimes it rains on picnic day. Not much you can do about it. Swearing at god won't make the rain less wet.
Repeat after me -- it's just a game!

Oh, don't get me wrong...as a refuge from Everquest, WoW and Star Wars Galaxies, I'm loving the Eve skill system.
I'm just a little annoyed that the server crashed right as my training completed last night and my morning routine to get me and the kids out of the house is the same window as server downtime...so if I try doing Eve stuff at that point, I'll have my wife locking on her missle systems and ganking me.

Unfortunate events will happen from time to time. This last weekend, while playing racquetball, I twisted my back and was pretty much incapacitated for much of the weekend. Needless to say, logging into EVE was near last in my mind of things I needed to get done. As a result, I lost a FULL DAY's worth of training because I had forgotten about a skill finishing. You can be sure I was somewhat peeved(at myself mostly) when I logged in. Nevertheless, I think people just need to let go and remember that it's just a game. There for your pleasure and enjoyment. It's not supposed to dominate your life, nor cause you undue stress.
If I need to rationalize the loss, I can just pretend that I started 1 day later than my actual start date. So instead of starting on March 8, I can simply ask myself how worse off I would be if I had started on March 9? Not much, so how bad is losing 1 day's worth of training? Not that bad either. At least that's how I can live with this recent "tragedy"!

Edited by: Nigh7F0x on 11/10/2006 16:10:32 Sometimes there just isn't anything that you can do and you will miss training skill windows. That's part of the fun of Eve, not everything will always go your way. I'm about to start my 4th month of subscription and there have been days where i lost as much of 18 hours of training time because I simply forgot to change it before i left somewhere. The best that you can do is relax and remember that this is just a game. It's not a contest to see how many skill points you can get, which the 3 year vets have a pretty good lead. :D Anyway just be thankful that you can train offline and that you don't need the client open to gain skill points.
Edit: Kade made a really good point about how little 1 day of training can affect your character.

Yes. I agree. I'm a dad with 4 kids, the oldest with a learning disability. My wife is a cancer survivor. There's a billion things more tragic in my life than missing a training window.
I'm just saying, I'd give CCP an extra buck or two a month if I could do training via a web portal if it wouldn't ruin their vision of the game.
That's all.

skill training is a VERY big part of the game... why would you take it out of the game

The main reason I believe the Devs don't want an unlimited skill queue system or web access to training is because it would be too easy to script training of characters. It would be alt heaven and character sales would explode. I just don't think it would be healthy for the game in the end.
Though, if the EVE-Lite APIs ever go public, it wouldn't be long until you can do everything (cept flight of course) from a web site or portable device. In this case the potential for scripting would be crazy. I would really like to see what people would do with the APIs, but at the same time, I hope the Devs make a system that is hard to exploit, if ever it gets released.

Preventing easy macroing of characters is a perfectly fine reason for not allowing web access. I think we can probably all agree on that.

If I've got a short train about to finish as I go to work, I just switch to another planned skill and then switch back when I get home for an hour or two.
If I have 7-8 hours left on a skill I set it going before I go to bed and it's done when I get up.
If I have around 14 hours left, I set it going before I go to work, and it's done when I get back.
I often juggle with 2-4 skills all partially done but I can be relaxed about them and not worry about getting up in the middle of the night etc.
You don't lose any %age trained when you switch so that made a lot of sense to me.

its really easy fixing it. a Rank 1 or 2 takes usually 1-2 hours to train to level 1 or 2. And at level 3-4 it takes 6- 20 hours. depends on your learning skills etc. When you are online always train the short time skills, so when you have to go offline you have the skills that takes longer time to train. When I started out in this game, I too had lot of short time skills, but I always managed to get around it. Now i have skills that take 20-40 days to train. and lot of em. If you can work it out the first 2-3 months, you will have long time skills for sure.
The skill system is a critical part of EVE. Most of us find it slightly annoying from time to time that skills take such long time to train, but... at the end most of us dont want it different. This is EVE. And Patience is the main key to enjoy this fantastic piece of aventure.
Good luck!

I've only had to change skills 3 times in the last 3 months.
I think I'd rather have your problem.
