My first association is 16" guns and a day where Naval warfare was a lot more interesting than today.
As for EVE, Battleships = ISK and thats about it. (Yes I run lvl4s) Way too common to be something special anymore. Dreads pretty much have the traditional role of the Battleship in EVE. In a historical sense, I think EVEs battleships are a lot like the 74-gun Ship of the Line of the 18th/19th century. The mainstay of any fleet, but also omnipresent in small gangs. A common tool for projection of power. --------- ZOMG my sig was concordokkened! Link removed due to bad language on remote site. -wystler

A BS to me means Cannon Fodder. Generally in fleets BS draw fire as primary targets, although I will admit gangs and fleets are getting smarter and are moving away from this trend. PvP, or PvE, BSĘs to me mean primary target.

Depends on the Bship in question.
Gallente: Oh, look, a Gallente Bship. How quaint. *stay in SS, no sense losing a ship to a *****mobile* Caldari: Oh, look, ECM. *stay in SS, same reason* (Addendum: Raven in lowsec and possibly 0.0 is a fabulous target in a Phoon) Minmatar: Oh, look, a gate sniper. *stay in SS, no sense trying to get to someone 250km away* Amarr: Mmm, crunchy. *attack in said phoon*

Slow and can beat stuff because or large NOS... thats bout it for me.
P.S. The number of slots helps in beating other things as well but only really the number of webbers/target painters they can fit.

my Image of the battleship is a vessel bristling with guns, much like the floating can of whupass used by the US Navy known as the Iowa class. there is no sight in war machines more amazing then a full broadside of an Iowa class short of a nuclear weapon.

Looks like some players replying to the post just found out how to kill a newb in a battleship, in something other than a bs
Anyway, the battleships today still **** excellence and in the hands of a skilled and expirienced pilot they are the supreme.

Edited by: eVaLF on 12/10/2006 20:01:25 As for me, when i hear a "BattleShip" I imagine 1) Raven - it'a just the first BS i can think of, as many people here do. interesting why? 2) ISK - pretty costy for noobs, which is good 3) Profit - as I build battlehips and I enjoy that very much
I bet many of you have bought battleships from me (if bought in Jita)
This makes me proud when I see a Raven or a Megathron in space meaningfully flying by, and there's a good chance that it was built by me.
Battleships are great! I like em
Thank you everyone for the answers, was very interesting to know

Of course I will take for granted you're asking about Eve.
Then...
Battleship:
Type of vessel seemingly designed to strike terror into newbs, making them whine and grovel until they get all the nerfs they need to finally be able to pwn them solo with a T1 Frig or Beginner one if possible, in such a way that unless Lvl 4 missions are in mind, training for them is highly adviced against.
It all began with a missinterpreted and now missused and definitely abused developer phrase: "They are not meant to be solo pwnmobiles"; catchy and repeated line these days, usually found along spearhead whines such as: "Nerf Stabs!", "Nerf Instas!" and the rather recent one: "Nerf NOS!".
Yay! So much meaning in one word, amazing, huh?
But well I honestly can't complain, because thanks to all of those clever and resourceful individuals who bravely fought for the cause, now everyone can be a competent PVP'er with just training... Ibis IV. So thanks God I noticed the hype soon enough to not to train for more than what lvl 4's require... -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

And of course, I can barely wait to get the needed skills for the Nighthawk and the Vulture already (NH solo, Vulture in gang).
I'm sorry dude...but if you can tank a raven for very long in your ferox, you're not fighting a very skilled raven pilot. /me knows what t2 torps can do.

Battleship is still the backbone of any serious patrol for war targets and the like.
Personally I like spending most of my time in HACs or BCs.

The Battleship is still the only ship that can have a serious, out-and-out slugfest with other ships. Every other ship is limited in some way.
Plus it's very, very funny to watch newbs train BS IV, Large whatever IV and nothing else then moan that they got their BS popped in a level 3 mission.

The be-all end-all presense on the field of battle. The deciding factor of smaller gang fights and the foundation for any serious fleet.(well atleast till ECM was 'fixed' )
What is my first association when i hear "a battleship"?

This is a Battleship http://www.3dhistory.de/elemente/bilder/Bismarck/norway_sun2small.jpg
She was nearly as long as the titanic, substantially wider at the beam and quite a bit faster. Designed to solopwn hauler convoys in the Atlantic, the British were !@#$ scared of her and on her maiden voyage sent 3 BS, 2 BC, 2 heavy cruisers, 1/2 dozen destroyers, 2 aircraft carriers and a cruiser after her (did I miss any?).
After blowing the BC Hood the British flagship into itty bitty pieces in a single salvo from the 8x15" guns, she suffered a 1 in a million torpedo hit to the rudder that jammed the rudder into one of the props. Reduced to sailing in a slow circle the British then set about beating her to death. After being pummelled incessantly for hours by torpedos and shells everything above the deck armour was either destroyed or burning. However out of this entire bombardment not a single torpedo and only 2 shells managed to penetrate the main armour. At this stage the now desperate crew scuttled her.
Really the only word for it is "epic". That was a Battleship. I love Eve so I won't do it the disservice of comparing its Battleships to the Bismarck.
