EVE is one of the most underrated MMORPG out there! You guys need to get the word out. Start to advertise heavily in the US and other parts of the world.
Why don't you release some player made combat videos? Some of these huge battles are simply amazing to watch. Show the world what EVE players have created. THe high level of organization of some corporations, the complex social politics, player made stories etc.
Why don't you start a free trial? There is this horrible misconception going around that EVE is this empty space game that takes weeks to travel around and skills take month's to train. People say this game is lame, they are just misinformed. Give people the chance to check it out for 15 days. Let them see the potential this game has. Make the initial stages of new players more fun and engaging. Don't dump them into the world directly into mining and other boring monotomous activities. Create some n00b agent missions that are fun and informative as far as game systems and how the game works. Perhaps some missions that introduce the new players to the story and the conflict in the game. You need to tingle the imagination form the start.
This game needs a bigger influx of new players if it plans to survive. We need new players to recruit and keep Corp's fresh and alive. Recruitment in this game is horrible. All you get is a bunch of infiltrators, spies and thieves.
I have been going around the net checking MMO's being released in the near future and others next year and beyond, there is nothing that comes even close to bringing a space based game the offers the game elements EVE has and *will* have. You guys need to take advantage of this unique experience, specially for the people sick and tired of the fantasy hack and slash games.
Lets get this game going CCP! Release more game content before the years end. Lets get some nasty empire conflict going. Lets give current players and corporations a purpose.
I know EVE is in its infancy, it is still wearing ****y diapers from beta. Lets wipe that bum and start growing and maturing!

I couldn't agree more. Most of the gamers I mention EvE to have never heard of it

All around I agree but the free 30 days you get when you sign up don't count? :)

This is the case unfortunately. Word of mouth only gets you so much...slowly.
CCP should start a massive advertising campaing displaying what truly sets it appart from the rest of the crowd.

That requires people to buy the game in the first place. They need to have a free trial with a downloadable version of the game. People are more willing to invest the time doing that compared to actually making a monetary investment, on something they are not sure about.

can anyone even imagine the horrors committed with free accounts by the 'nasty' people?
using trial accounts to spy on people, to attack in 1.0, etc.
Probably not such a good idea
Although releasing player videos *is* a good idea. I think they may start with footage from the amarr tourney. .

Theres people out there playing space pokemon games where you spend 8 months Leveling your character to xxx and collect loot.
(Earth and Beyond comes to mind...)
People need to know theres a REAL space MMORPG out here for people aged 20-60 which is not easy and not hard to play, and gives you FULL control over your gaming experience.

Doing free trials for your game is *always* a good idea. This scenario you paint is overly pessimistic. What kind of damage can you do with a 15 day old n00b character anyway? I can certainly imagine these guys in their Ibis trying to kill people but getting pwned by Concord in 1.0. I don't even hear of griefers wasting their time with a n00b alt character in 1.0 space bugging the newbies. I don't see it as a big con against the pros of having new people checkout the game for 15 days.

What about setting up some trial systems on the Chaos server? No need to worry about spies... |

I don't think that would help. Imagine logging into the game only to find 15 people online.

Edited by: Killgorde on 31/10/2003 11:58:13 A great idea MrPops and I for one agree with a lot of your points but...
...sorry to be a tad negative here - but why bother advertising at all until they get the serious content (POS etc) in that most of us have been waiting for since release of "paid-beta"?
If they don't the result would be:
a) Big influx of new players trying game out b) A healthy percentage of new players get gripped by game and sign up c) After 3-6 months 75% of new players cancel subs when their expectations about "that which is promised" doesnt materialise - I can only relate to my corp's (and all the others on the forums) experiences here.
Example: I persuaded 15 guys to migrate from DaoC at launch. They all fell in love with Eve. They all got frustrated/bored waiting for content to come in I had inadvertantly misinformed them was imminent when they signed up (well if you can't believe Pann, who can you believe?). 14 of them are back playing DaoC...most lasted around 3-4 months.
Be better to get the content into the game (preferably yesterday or sooner) THEN do a free trial period so those that do sign up at the end of the free period are here for the long haul.
It's blatantly obvious that CCP are drip-feeding a lot of content (which we know actually works fine) to extend the life for those who joined on launch, and are missing the big picture: that if all the significant content is in people will stick around a hell of a lot longer, and the game will grow (player number wise) because corps have far larger (station construction etc) long term objectives to motivate and capture the imagination of their members with.
I:COM's stats bear this out - slightly negative growth over the 6 months or so since release. If CCP are happy with those figures they need a "Business Implant" or two inserted.

Because Chaos is trial a server (right ?), if people see a bugged and unstable version of eve, they could have a bad idea of what eve is. The trial char could have a mark "TRIAL" with their name, so no need to worry about spies from this type of account. People who want to spy will create an alt char just like now.

It only takes one to spoil the game for hundreds, if not thousands.
if you think about it this way, one person can get an account, make it a female noob for example then use that account to maybe gain entrance to a corp, maybe a old or young corp, no difference they all have some cash. Try to make passes as quickly as possible or try to take / borrow (But not return) money and goods from them and give them to your main character or corp.
The outcome will be that the corps will end up locking out new players for a month till they are past the 30 day trial and the 30 day trial player will leave cause EVE is boring cause FedX and licking roids is mindless and numb.
But thats just an opinion / thought i had.

I can only tell u how I started playing Mankind for half a year before EVE came out. I was reading and posting in the forums of the game called "Master Of Orion III" and someone put a link to the game Mankind, I surfed a bit on the site and then downloaded the trial version which gave 15 days trial with item limitation, I immidiately got into the stuff and bought the game over the internet on the next day...
If CCP didnt had this agreement which doesnt allow them to make the CD-Keys purchaseable over the net, this might call in some ppl!

(Sorry to double post but I accidentaly pressed "post reply")
Anyway they might not be allowed to sell CD-KEYs but CCP could have a trial version with link routes that come from various MMO sites and multiplayer community sites...

I aggree here, a trail is NEEDED. Everything which brings new players into Eve.
2 weeks would be perfect. And about trial-chars inflitrating a corp- if someone gives his money and/or corp rights as fast.. well, then it's their own fault. An alt could as easily infiltrate them.
