When you have something to sell at a market hub, you may think you can save ISK by offering a direct trade on local, bypassing market fees and taxes if you sold it through the market. But beware! An unscrupulous buyer can offer a trade, post the ISK value you wanted, then switch the value to something much lower just before you hit accept. This happened to me and, ah well, water under the bridge .. but don't fall for the same scam. Let the station have its taxes and just sell it through the market, safe and secure. |

Never use the direct trade window to trade unless it is with an alt. There are contracts for a reason.

Number two rule is, If seems legit it's a scam.
Number three, If it looks like a scam. It's a scam.

The other reason to use the direct trade window is to give or receive something for free. I do that a fair bit, handing out pre-fitted suicide gank ships or even handing out cheap PVP fitted ships in fleet ops.

Somehow, this has to do with avatars that only display the white part of their eyes .. they may or may not have irises, and definitely have a period at the end of their corp/alliance name. But of course you don't care about that ... |

In EVE, there are traders and there are scammers. Only experience will allow you, the freshly minted space cadet, to distinguish between the two. Pro tip: sometimes there is no difference. Carry on.

Wait.
So you fell for a scam that people have been warning others for for YEARS.
Yes, back when I started in 2010 this was already the case.

There are "scammers" - people that treat a reputation for honesty as the mark of a sucker and who avoid it at any cost. And there are "traders" - people who treat a reputation for honesty as a currency to be saved up, waiting for the perfect opportunity to spend it.

Agreed, was going to add in "or if no isk is changing hands" but didn't want to confuse the situation.

to the op: is that actually possible? When they change the ISK amount the green tick drops off and then they have to press the offer button again and you would see all this.
The only way I see it going wrong is if the trade window doesn't actually enforce any kind of transactionality and just accepts whatever the state of the trade window is at server tick regardless of if both parties agreed on a trade or not. I find that hard to believe but this is EVE after all...
Admittedly been a long time since I tested this. Last thing I bought through direct trade was a PLEX in jita a couple of years ago and had no issues. I did double check the offer before hitting accept of course though.
One more game mechanic for me to test added to the list... |

yeah you got hit by the reverse scam that's been around forever in this game, usually its some one offing an item and then they switch items on you when you go to purchase it.
