I try to persuade people to come and play EVE. Most are MMORPG players so they know a little about EVE and they are put off by the real time travel between systems which can be boring. Never the less, I still try to get people to join what was a great game. Now I have to explain to them as well as the boring traveling between systems, that they may have to wait in a queue when they get to a gate for it to activate, like I was for 4 mins this evening. Not to mention queues to log on now.
"Dont worry" I tell them, "it is only like that when it is busy." However the busy times are evenings and weekends when most people are able to play.
CCP is so proud of the single universe server setup. However, the amount of players has exceeded the capability of the hardware/software or even both. I think it is time that CCP swallowed their pride and split it up in to more manageable clusters like they do on most MMORPG, and give us the quality of service and gaming we deserve and are paying for.
I do not pay ú9 a month, to lost ships because modules will not activated during missions. I do not pay ú9 a month, to wait 30+seconds to move a module from my ship when fitting. I do not pay ú9 a month, to sit at a jump gate for 4 mins in a queue.
I think I will give the game another month and then I am quitting. After 2 and a half years, it will be hard to do, but the subscrition is now a waste of my money.
P.S. Sorry for the moan, but I just had to vent my anger.

Splitting the server up into different instances would be really stupid and kill the entire idea behind the single universe concept.
Adding additional hardware and upgrading the hardware would do good for cutting down on the lag issues, though. ----- CEO, Astrum Contract Services Group

If you don't pay ú9 a month to do something.... don't pay!
And with the queuing system - oh i'm sorry, I'll wait a bit longer and you can go first!

In a few ques tonight, what that guy said earlier about it all being linked to load balancing seemed to be correct... i was lagging and que'ing in the center and down at the backside of eve with nobody around.
Weird realy:/
More hardware might work i guess, who knows... the sames been said 2-3 times before..
Personaly i don't think they will ever get on top on it...
But whatever, the core issues of lagging, ques in general don't realy effect me, i can live with it. ______

I caught a 10 minute queue in lowsec today , and just spent the last hour undocking from Jita (lol, I know, I'm not whining ).
While I sympathize with the OP, I don't think we need to split up the servers...the problem I see coming is, at what point does it become economically unviable to maintain a single shard world?

I can semi-sympathise with your post, though the way it's worded comes across as just a whine. Anyway, the lag all around has got worse. Where I used to have a bit of lag and no queues, now I constantly encounter lag and have hit several queues.
Ordering more yaardware is a good thing, but as with the major yaardware upgrade that happened earlier this year, the benefits will probably be fleeting. They're throwing band-aids over problems all over the place but not seemingly addressing the root causes. The hardware will help in the short term but as more people join, the problems will again appear and we'll be in the same situation we're in today.
It's not an easy task by any means. I do seriously think CCP needs to get 100% behind server improvements and fix the current lag issues. I know they've got 'people working on it', but so far that hasn't helped lag from a customer's point of view. Sure, their metrics, RAM and CPU usage may have gone down a bit, but from my perspective the lag is still as bad as it has ever been.

I love EVE just as much as the next guy. Its depth is amazing. The devs have created an awesome environment for player-player interaction (which is the only content that truly remains entertaining) that they keep developing and adding to.
I also realize that the whining can get old. It's an online game with a diverse subscriber base. You're always going to have someone whining about something or the other.
However, you posters who jump someone's case for bringing up the issue of increasing lag and queues need to step back and think for a second. It is a very real issue that can make the game not fun at all.
not fun = lost subscriptions = less profitable business venture = possibly no more EVE.
I realize that the queue monster doesn't rear its ugly head to everyone with the same frequency. I realize that some people have more tolerance for delays whilst playing than do others. Understand that the OP and others who have started similar topics have reached or are near their tolerance. That means a soon to be lost subscription, which... contrary to popular belief, isn't good for anyone's EVE addiction.
The constructive thing to do here would be to (politely and kindly) impress upon CCP just how urgently we require them to take action to SOLVE these problems. I know that they are ordering new hardware. Our job is to convince them to order/install it sooner. Order more hardware, recode the load balancing software, whatever it takes. Show them how important a lag-free gaming experience is to you. Probably much more so than Kali content (as much as I am looking forward to it).
PS Good greif, enough with the name-calling and general childishness. If you disagree, just say so politely and let that be that.

Firstly as to the insults about me being a kid in the playground, please grow up. I have not replied because I dont spend every waking minute on the internet like some.
Siriyana: Splitting the server up into different instances would be really stupid and kill the entire idea behind the single universe concept. I totally agree, the single universe is a great achievement. A good idea can become a bad idea.
Admai Sket: If you don't pay ú9 a month to do something.... don't pay! And with the queuing system - oh i'm sorry, I'll wait a bit longer and you can go first! LOL. A year ago I canceled my subscription for 3 months because of simalar problems and I may do again. Thanks for the offer of letting me go first. ;)
Rehmes: CCP has already staed that they have made an order of more hardware in anticipation for Kali. So after the patch up of Kali is done once it goes live expect things to get smoother. For the mean time avoid busy systems unless u rly need something. If they have ordered new hardware, it will be months before it goes live. Its hard to avoid busy systems now. There are not many places where there are few people. Even the POS I use 10 jumps in to 0.0 space, has 20 people at a time in it.
Sphit Ker: I totally undertand your point! I got a potential subscriber here last week but he laughted away seing how long it is to move around.. I got 4 people to sign up for the trial. None of them joined because they said the traveling was boring.
Gonada: Seriously do it dont whine, moan, or post. frikin leave , go back to wow. It'll relieve the lag and clear up all the B.S. petitions that are out there from you guys claiming ships lost to lag instead of the real culprit: stupidity. Is there a need to be insulting? I have never played WoW and never will. I have done 3 petitions ever in 2 and a half years. 1 lost ship, 1 spam petition and 1 bug petition after a patch. So please engage your brain cell before posting such a sweeping statement.
Tas Devil: Just one thought ? Are you the alt of a WoW developper ? Cause it was just so obvious ! Na, I'm not. The first time I have actaully seen WoW properly was on South Park.
Ice Conch: never been gate queued, whenever i was login queued, i just restarted client and voila! no more queue. Yeah i learned that very quick. First time I waited and never got on. But if you quit and try again you get straight on.
Alekto Erinys: The constructive thing to do here would be to (politely and kindly) impress upon CCP just how urgently we require them to take action to SOLVE these problems. I know that they are ordering new hardware. Our job is to convince them to order/install it sooner I completely agree. That was my intention. I just wanted an email address when I can send an email basically saying, why my feeling where. That I love the game, and its starting to get ruined and nearly unplayable by the lag. I am a believer in constructive critaism, and that is all i wanted to leave. But I could not find an address to send it to. The only way to send it (that I could find) was via petition (which will clog it up and pointless) or on the forum. But my frustration increased when I could not find some where to contact them directly.

Well this is the things that puzzle me...
1) People complain how long traveltime there is...
Answer, I tried WoW, and man did I have to run around ALOT!!!! and it was not fun running from one end of Darkshore to the other.... and constantly had to adjust my way of running or I got stuck at a tree running mad without getting anywhere.
I actually prefer the way EVE is build up when it comes to traveltime.
and I move from north to south constantly in corpbusiness as my missionsystems are 30 jumps away from corp HQ. It honestly gives me time to do things I normally don't have time to do.
2) Que.
Answer: I have NEVER had to sit in a que in EVE, never... I understand that some do have a problem with this but I can't understand it being such a big problem... it can't be or I must have ended up in ques long time ago would I not ?
3) Lag...
Answer: I admit I have never joined any big fleetbattles, I hardly ever is in Jita (actually less than 5 times in my eve-time)... I from time to time experience some lag but very very very few times it can be classified as BAD.
So what do I do that must be right ??? I stay away from hub systems (I trade in Amarr yes but I don't stay there very long), I do my missions in Low sec, I know there is a Node problem so why bother blobwar then ?
Well that is the things that puzzle me abit atleast.. when I read the complaint on this site... to be honest I check the forums less and less ... mostly because of unjustified whining !!! ---------------------------------------------- "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things." 1 cor. |

I do that too. I live in a remote bit of low-sec in a fairly unpopular region. I used to be one of those annoying people who said "I never get lag".
This weekend, I played for about an hour after downtime before the lag made things ridiculous. I toyed with the idea of moving to one of my old hunting grounds to avoid the lag, but travel was so soul-destroying that I gave up.
Whatever I did that was "right" now seems to be "wrong".

I do not want a split universe but I agree with the OP. Lag and queues are causing problems. I was stuck in a queue on EVERY gate I tried to pass last night. This was in a deserted 0.0 area.
I do not wish to leave EVE but the lag and queues is ruining my gameplay and it may eventually make me try something else.

It has been getting worse lately, and then I am talking about when server has comparable amount of users.
However, it is not about swallowing pride when it comes to splitting up the servers, it's about ruining the game's foundation and concept. It won't really benefit the game world at all, considering that it is built completely around the concept that PvP must matter and make impact. Splitting the server up will remove this completely.
As far as World of Warcraft and South Park is concerned. Well, aside from that guy running around killing other players, it was extremely accurate. Should be said, too, that WoW is far from lag free. The month I played it I did dabble in what PvP WoW offered, and there were more than one occasion when I was killed by several people I couldn't see. WoW isn't lag free because of it's server architecture, it's lag free because it is built around, and forces players to do, small scale combat. Essentially, comparably, WoW combat involves less than 20 entities in the immediate local. So as far as a WoW-ization of EVE in order to reduce lag, splitting servers up isn't the way to go, but a more cunning distribution of content (nuking Jita), limiting gangs to 5-6 players with possibility for large gangs of max 50 players, and then work very hard to remove the incentives to have more than 50 players in one local at a time*. Those are the keys - not split servers.
* Can only really be done by removing PvP, but let's not get THAT specific. - Three years old |

Edited by: Elgar Lightfoot on 16/10/2006 11:07:19 I enticed 4 new players to join me these last few weeks. I've not experienced any queues or poor service in all my time of playing. I have noticed a bit of lag, and although annoying, it's not cause any major problems (yet).
I have played on many sharded and instanced world MMO's and I MUCH prefer the single universe to any of them. If I speak to anyone that plays EVE I know they play in my galaxy.

This weekends lag was unacceptable and I'm sure that almost every player in eve experienced lag of some sort. For the time being trial accounts must be stopped and no implmenentation of KALI this year until new hardware has been installed or they find that implementing KALI will reduce lag.Anything else could result in disaster in my view.

Now thats just not nice
If it doesn't affect you, you don't need to reply.
Maybe having a whine isn't the most constructive way to solve the issues the OP is raising - but hey, its damn frustrating to find yourself in a position where lag is making everything take much longer (especially if you only have limited free time to play).
I'm quite new to the game and at the weekend things were running so slowly that me and some friends couldn't even fire back at the people shooting at us - I think our corp lost 4 ships in total. Yeh, we chose to petition it instead of writing on here and CCP are looking at it for us - but hey - I don't see what is wrong with the OP looking for a sympathetic ear from fellow players!
What makes these threads so unreadable isn't usually the OP, its the barrage of criticism that flies in after. We all play to have our own fun - and its frustrating for anyone that gets that interupted through no fault of their own. Maybe we all deal with it differently, but given if i mention Eve to any of my non-computer-gaming friends i get blank stares, i don't blame people for coming on here for a chat to people that understand.
Its just sad that we can't be a bit nicer to other players.
Besides, no one forces you to read or reply to 'whine' threads.

I avoid empire, and JITA like a plague! So I dont have waiting to jump issues...
I lost my password, and the petition system being as it is. I figured, I wont ever get a responce. No it went the other way! E-mails flew back and forth till the problem was resolved and my account restored.
I have lost ships due to lag, and got them back x3. Flying Dutchman III is still parked in the hanger. (Its haunted)
Except here...I have NEVER had a problem with CCP staff, they have bent over backwards for us time and time again.
And I like this single universe we all live and play in.
And did you play EQ in the begining? Try walking from one side to the other!!!
No I dont see much wrong with this game...matter of fact I would like all ships to have jumpdrives, and do away with the gates....Then you would have to slow boat out to the hyper limet before jumping.

Edited by: The Snowman on 16/10/2006 11:42:50 I would have to agree,
As much as I DO like this game, its hard to convince your friends to play, when I myself am so unhappy about it.
If you have played for 2.5 years tho mate, dont quit!.. take a break, play some other games out there..
When you come back everything will smell of roses and you will keen to play again.
I just think 2.5 years worth of skill training is not something to throw away likley.

You know your favourite food manufacturers puts "Improved Recipe!" in big letters on the packet, and you end up thinking "but it tastes the same except now it has a bitter aftertaste"? That's because by "Improved" they mean "It's better for us. We now get to make these things for a penny cheaper per unit, making us several million a year".
Now I remember some Dev Blog, feigning an interest in the community, saying something like "The dragon code improves things a great deal". And ever since that patch was deployed... how was your aftertaste?
I imagine they're having just one big laugh over at CCP just pushing to see exactly how poor an experience they can make it and we all stay like faithful hounds, thriving on the promise that it will actually get better.
And no you can't, I already decided who is getting my stuff when I leave. Which will be the moment a decent competing product arrives. And besides, only been at this two months and never bought any isk off ebay, ergo I don't have a lot.

Originally by: Alekto Erinys not fun = lost subscriptions = less profitable business venture = possibly no more EVE.
It's not anywhere near coming to that though. And bear in mind that people leaving over lag will in itself solve the lag problem for the people willing to stay. Given that CCP have managed to survive quite nicely on the lower player numbers before, suggests to me that it would take some diabolicaly bad business management for that to scupper CCP.
Originally by: Alekto Erinys The constructive thing to do here would be to (politely and kindly) impress upon CCP just how urgently we require them to take action to SOLVE these problems.
That has been done to death already. The Devs have responded to death already. There's really nothing more to be done now until their stated solutions come on-stream, at which point we can impress upon them whether they have worked or not.
They already realise exactly how serious the problem is. Whipping the slave who's already working at maximum will not get things done any quicker.
Originally by: Alekto Erinys I know that they are ordering new hardware. Our job is to convince them to order/install it sooner.
How is complaining at CCP going to convince IBM to ship their hardware sooner? Cause from Oveur's dev blog, that's the stage the hardware's at now. Funnily enough, CCP don't have the power to demand the rest of the world bends over backwards for them.
Originally by: Alekto Erinys Order more hardware, recode the load balancing software, whatever it takes. Show them how important a lag-free gaming experience is to you. Probably much more so than Kali content (as much as I am looking forward to it).
Maybe that's why the pulled all the top devs off kali for the last few months to sort out the post-Dragon problems? Maybe that's why they held the stress-tests on sisi? Maybe that's why kali isn't even going to make it to sisi before it's original release date?
Your suggestions are good. It's just that the devs are already doing them.
Originally by: GoddessHekate If they have ordered new hardware, it will be months before it goes live. Its hard to avoid busy systems now. There are not many places where there are few people. Even the POS I use 10 jumps in to 0.0 space, has 20 people at a time in it.
So what would you rather they did?
While it would be lovely if the world worked that way, they can't just click their fingers and magic up a solution just because you're unhappy.
Originally by: GoddessHekate I got 4 people to sign up for the trial. None of them joined because they said the traveling was boring.
If they didn't have the patience for a bit of travelling, then they really didn't have enough patience for eve.
Some people not liking eve is really not a problem. Do we say Unreal Tournament has a problem because some people prefer Rome:Total War? Of course not. Eve will not, and should never try to, every single person who plays computer games. Now, if noone liked eve, that would be a problem. But we are clearly not in that situation.
Originally by: Roshan longshot The other day, there was only 8 folks in system...and for no reason what so ever we all got disconected from the game.
There's always a reason. Local in your system is a very, very bad indicator of load, because you are almost always sharing that node with many other systems. As you can't tell which other systems are on the node with you, you can never really be sure what the true load on your node actually is. My first guess would be that you were unlucky enough to be on the same node as a fleet battle which took down the node. From my experience of the sisi stress-tests, the right situation can cause a node-drop without any significant pre-drop lag. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

To the OP:
Im gonna get warned for this but hey.. will you please STFU seriously? if thats big of a problem post with your main? if your quitting who cares if we know who it is, but the fact is your not quitting your just whining (this is shown as your too scared to post with your main)
Seriously if they don't like eve tell them to f-off tbh, eve is the best mmorpg out there and it DOES require a particular taste, sense of paitence.
And guess what? This is my main.

The Devs have also stated that the problems encountered with Dragon have counteracted those improvements, which is why they've pushed back Kali to give the core team time to address them.
What basically happened is that they put a bigger engine in the Dragon car, but the brake got stuck half-on. Once they get the brake unstuck, the car will fly.

i agree with a new server seperate hardware, its time for newer players to get a chance of avoiding the big mess tranquility is at right now. a new server for new players is a welcome addition. if people want to join tranquility they re welcome. if not, they should have the option to play on a newer server, i mean chinese players play on TQ.

You're right. This weekend it was so tactical, it was practically turn-based. Activate module... wait 30 seconds... forget why you activated it in the first place.

Some of the posts are interesting and make valid points.
I dont believe that CCP are just sitting there laughing. I do think they are working on the problem. What CCP is going is an achievement, but there must be a limit of what the hardware and software can do. Perhaps we have reached it?
Originally by: Laythun this is a patient game, a waiting game, a game of tactics, chess to your snap.
Yeah but even chess has rules about how long you should take to make a move.
Also why are some people so insulting about this? I thought EVE was for the more intelligent gamer?

You pay ú9.00 a month? Dang, I love being on a 6 month subscription
As I tell everyone- if you don't like it, don't play it. If th lag bothers you that much, take a break for a little while and come back later when it might be fixed (CCP keeps your characters warm and safe for you while you're gone). No point playing a game you don't enjoy.
Personally, the lag doesn't seem to effet me that bad, and CCP are working on fixing it. So I'm happy playing as I always have

I used to get anoyed with travle times but there not really that bad.
Think about your generic mmog, you have to walk around to get to places. In eve, you only have 30km per system to get where you're going, otherwise you just warp somewhere.
Best plan in eve is to stay around the same general area you work/play from, either that or try and get hold of some jump clones.
