I've heard similiar suggestions across the board, but I have yet to see this particular idea posted so what the crap, I may as well suggest it.
In Khali we're getting all sorts of contracts, but Khali is also supposed to fix a lot of the problems facing eve today. I'm certainly not old enough to really feel the impact of inflation, but I listen when a lot of the older players say that Eve used to and should once again be better than it is now. They often point out that inflation is a serious and ever growing problem. Inflation arises because of injections of isk into the economy, and it's been explained time and time again that insurance is one source of these injections. Since every time I see it mentioned everyone argues it isn't, I'll briefly paraphrase an explanation: Player A buys ship Z from Player B for 100 mil Player A insures ship Z for 30 mil. (30 has left the economy) Player A looses ship Z and gets 70mil. (70 has entered the economy)
In total, 30 mil has left and 70 mil has entered so there has been a net increase of 40 million isk into the game (Player A has lost 60 million true, but much of that has gone to Player B).
Why not abolish NPC insurance companies and make player insurance contracts within the new khali system? I don't see any problem with that, since it moves money around the economy without adding any, and it still allows people to benifit from insurance. Personally, I love insurance and couldn't imagine not having it (it saves me a considerable ammount of cash when I take a risk that backfires), but I hate that it's an injection of isk into the economy.
ps - I haven't read but a sparse few of the dev blogs, so if this is already planned, I will feel like a complete dolt. Still, I'm sure everyone makes a dumb post from time to time... so be gentle with the flames? ---

I never really thought of it that way.
I think this is a good idea, but it seems it would be hard to implement... maybe I'm just not thinking of it correctly.
You would need a bank account of payables, but that bank account wouldn't be able to be withdrawn from only given to players with claims. But wouldn't that take alot more away from the people issuing the insurance? In some way or another, the pod pilot would have to pay the insurance compay MUCH more than the ship is worth for this to be a moderatly profitable business.

I saw the problem, not what the solution would do. You're absolutely right, there is no real profit in insurance companies are there? So who but the rich and kind-hearted would run such an insurance company? And if you add isk from say CONCORD or some other random NPC faction for their services, you instantly have an isk injection - exactly what this was supposed to stop.
So, the real question that I have yet to answer (as you pointed out) is what would be the incentive for any nuttbar to want to run an insurance company? Er... That's a really good question. If I think of something, I'll suggest it in a later post. ---

Hmm... well maybe if you issued insurance for less than a day. I don't know how it would work, but maybe you could get a contract with an player ran insurance company where you could buy insurance from them at any time in any place via electronic funds transfer. You can only contract with that company and if you want to cancle your contract, the company would set a pre-determined amount that cant' be changed before you even contract with them.
Say you're sitting at your POS and 15 Enemies warped in and your aliance wants to jump them. You could buy insurance for 1 or 2 hours, incase you get the crap blown out of you. If you walk away, you just spent 5mil ISK for the financial security.
I'm sure this would only work with insurance claims over 30mil. Because it would just be too hard to get newbies and people who don't fly big ships to remember to get insurance every single time.

You forgot that Player B also lose money by using his minerals to build ship Z which might cost exactly 40 mil ;-).

I think the isk ballance is fine. There are few prices I find that are higher than when I started. Implants are halved, the rare connection skill books are halved, battleships are still several million isk off what they were preRMR. The only things that are really going up are the prices of popular t2 items such as HACs where the issue is supply and demand. Minerals are all cheaper than they were too. Part of this is from the dreaded Macroers and farmers but also because CCP removed the npc buy orders. This meant that certain minerals were no longer being kept artificially high e.g. mexallon and pyerite (though latter is now higher than the old npc buys). I can think of very few other items that cost more now than a year ago except for t2. _______

I'd actually have no problem with them removing insurance totally.

ERM wrong.
Buying minerals again only moves around isk in the economy, it doesnt create or destroy it.

I'm not sure about manufacturing, but I thought there was no isk overhead (or a minor "rental" charge, certainly not 40million) when building a ship. I thought the only cost was materials (and again that rental fee). Either way, the use of minerals is NOT an isk sink because minerals aren't isk. Those minerals might have been harvested by the player or purchased from another player. In either of those two cases case, the isk is just changing hands, not materializing from nowhere (like insurance or missions).
Are you saying it costs actual money (not materials) and a considerable ammount of money per-ship to build one? Ie 40 million isk + materials? If not, it's still isk being injected into the economy. ---
