Poll time.
When firing missiles, particularly at a target which will take several volleys, do you:
a) Just mash F1-F8, launching all missiles at once. b) Try and time your volley, launching roughly evert 1-3 seconds, thus causing a constant stream of missiles heading towards your target. c) something else (elaborate)
I use method (b). With a @9s ROF on my cruises, I hit the launchers about 1.5s apart (not exact science) to get a constant stream.

Not 100% sure, but defender missiles cause a whole "blob" of missiles to disappear and not just 1...but this might have been changed/solved.

There is no reason to do option b and not a, using b makes u loose allot of dmg potetial. Personally when I get the chance I activate the launchers before the locktime is up making my launchers activate exactly as the lock is made and maximising my dmgpotetial

the only reason b would be an option is when using fraps

firstly, sometimes launching in a steam is better when a target is heavily tanked, as it provides costant damage which is slightly harder sometimes to tank.
Secondly, with npc defender missiles, if you launch a volley at once of lets say torps, several defenders will hit the same torp. That means a torp goes pop. By doing B, the defenders hit several torps.

A bit of both, depending on the NPCs I'm fighting in my missions ... some of those NPCs can repair their shield to the max in the 9 seconds between each volley, so a stream is better against them, while some others spam so much defenders that you need a big volley to have one or two missiles that hit the target.
In PvP ? No idea.

during the alliance tournament a dev (forgot who) stated on eve tv that defenders are the only weapon (except smartbombs) that still deal splash damage.
so missile blob = bad.
dunno if its still true, though.

Anyone want to let me lob missiles at them to test this theory?
I stagger them to do with the tanking thing. NPC's 'seem' to lose shields faster when staggered.
PvP wise I normally either pre-arm the launchers (F1-F8 and then target), or I'm caught with my pants down and I just mash all the F-keys

I'm quite certain my dual blob of missiles have had defenders going into them popping a missile and the blob became slightly smaller and continued to target.
Thus a blob isn't erased by a single defender, but if they do splash damage a few defender might erase alot more missiles, i cant say anything about that.

When using torps against a npc bs I find that their defenders still only kill one of the torps even though they are in one big ball, if I choose to fire a stream the npc gets to fire more defenders before the first land wich also means less dmg. U got the delay of the launchers u fire later then the first one+u got the chance of the npc getting more defenders off. I must specify that this is when using torps, I do not know if defenders kill more missiles when using other types of missiles. People tend not to use defenders in pvp so there is no issue there, I always fire everything asap in pvp. As for the tanking I find that its harder to tank a 2000dmg boom then a 500-500-500-500. The dps is higher and if in fleet the target will go down faster

The defenders shouldn't kill any of them because it takes 3 defenders to down 1 torp.
Could be wrong but thats what I've been told and I've only ever seen npc BS fire a maximum volley of 2 defenders.

Personally I stagger.
For the simple reason that it just "Feels" as though I'm doing more damage that way, always spitting out a missile every few seconds instead of spitting out one missile blob every 10 seconds or so.
*Shrugs* I like the way it looks.

F1 - F6 preactivated, hopefully firing all at once. Stream vs intys/fast stuff.
Blob of missiles is better as they don't know how many you are actually shooting(and they aggro you since they think they can tank you and you bbq them). Also package delivery is better since they sometime die b4 they realize it's too late.

Edited by: CFC Fodder on 18/10/2006 16:27:50 Well, not using missiles, but I find that staggering delivers a constant stream of damage, that is much more likely to break any tank. That, and it looks like I'm actually fighting harder against a target, rather than being bored about it.

Personaly if I am near the limit range of them and laggy i stagger so that if I fail due to a lag busrt puting me momentarly out of range.. I loose only a single one.

I stagger usually, because of 2 things. First, if they DO happen to get lucky and time a smartbomb just right, it won't take out the whole blob. That's a holdover habit from when people actually used smartbombs as a defense. Second, I think I'm less likely to waste ammo shooting at a target that'll die in a second anyway, because if they're staggered, one is always almost about to fire, rather than all of them about ready to fire or all of them already done firing. Might only save a couple missiles, but it's better than docking again.
Lastly, I think it's more intimidating to see lots of missiles inbound rather than one. (at least it's more fun to watch.) ---

For NPCing, you'll notice there is a small delay before their shield starts recharging again. If you have a fire hose of missiles going at them, they recharge less.
In PVP, you're less likely to lose your whole volley to a smartbomb if you send them in a stream.
There's good points and bad points to both, tbh.
