I just finished training my caldari cruiser skill to level 3 and I need to cose a ship to replace my trusty Cormorant. I mostly plan to use it for solo pve at the moment (mission running, ratting etc). As far as I can see the only two viable choices are the caracal or the moa.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros and cons of these two? As far as I can see I have a choice between survivability with the Moa and higher dps in the Caracal. Also what level of missions can I hope to take on in a suitably equipped cruiser? Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance. _______________________________________________

My opinion only - don't complain!
PvE ship for mission running - Caracal. No tracking issues, plus with half-decent missile skills you can get 40 km range - with light missiles. For most purposes, I'd fit a full rack of assault launchers - same damage on frigs as cruisers, and MUCH easier to fit, so you can tank better. Incidentally, use the ship's bonuses and load Bloodclaws. It's also faster, I think - good for looting afterwards.
I am assuming that your general skill level isn't all that high, so bear that in mind if I'm wrong. Also assuming that you don't want too much risk of ship loss, I would go for level 2 maximum with any cruiser. Maybe some of the easy level 3, but not the hard ones.
Just my 0.02 isk.

The Caracal is a long range missile cruiser and it fufills its role extremely well. Its only shortcoming is that it has a kinetic missile damage bonus (which is not that bad tbh) instead of a RoF bonus, otherwise it is damn near perfect.
The Moa can tank better and is a great frig/cruiser sniper in pvp, but its less versatile and take more SP to use effectively.

That pretty much sums it up... I would say you should think caracal short term, and moa long term. JMHO tho. Really though, if you know you like missles better than turrets or vice-versa than go with what you enjoy. Think about where you want you char to be at 12m sp... That will probably help you choose. Do you want to PVP a lot or PVE a lot? PVE? Missles without question. PVP? Rails. Missles will still work in PVP, but you will find yourself wishing you had that nice insa-dmg.

Great thanks guys Caracal it is then :), my missile skills aren't that great at the moment but I don't have that much time to play in the next couple of weeks so I can use that time to upgrade. What skills should I be looking at getting to use it most effectively?

Caracal is easier to fit and fly, but the Moa can take more punishment and do more overall damage.

All the supporting skills + heavy missiles. 3s at least, aim for 4s in the longer term. 5 in heavy missiles is reserved for if you're planning to cruiser specialise.
I'd second the recommendation for Caracal. Moa's a good ship, but not nearly as user friendly. Turrets and missile skills are needed to do 'effective' damage with it, as well as ... well turrets are just a bit harder to use than fire and forget missiles.
Caracal's a great PvE ship. I'd recommend looking to passive tank it (large shield extender, 2 hardeners). It's not all that hot at PvP, but it's no slouch either.

Moa's high slot layout is a bit broken imo. Caracal is much easier to train
