Missing items reported by: GM Grimmi | 2006.10.22 23:42:33
Dear customers, we had some database issues earlier tonight and some of you may be missing items bought off the market or minerals from refining. Please file reimbursement petitions with details on what you are missing and the items will be returned as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience. EVE Online Customer Support!

Postmortem as usual.
First of all, the items that were supposed to be created during this time will not appear automatically. To get whatever item you did not get during the time TQ was broken, you will have to petition.
Now to explain the issue.
On friday, I defragmented the indexes of all tables on the RAMSAN. This frees up a lot of space on the RAMSAN, but its quickly consumed as the indexes get fragmented again. I did leave a lot of free space in the datafile, lots more then is normally consumed over a weekend, but for some reason the space was consumed much faster then usually. Under normal circumstances, this would not have mattered at all, because the datafile will automatically grow when needed. However, something cause the tempdb, a system database thats located on the RAMSAN, to fill up the rest of the free space before the datafile tried to grow, so when the datafile tried to grow, there was no free space for it, causing tonights issue.
At downtime today, there was enough space on the RAMSAN, so the issue is not that I overlooked that the partition was filling up, like someone suggested, the tempdb only needs a few minutes and a couple of lines of bad SQL/bad query plan to consume this space.
On Monday, 30th of October, I, two other guys from the operations department, a tech from IBM and a guy from Icelandic telecom are heading to London to make the changes Oveur announced in this news item.
The space on the RAMSAN will be doubled and that should give us a bigger buffer to address issues like this before its too late. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

(regarding lost items)
Yes, you should petition for any items/ships lost as a result of the TQ reboot earlier although there could be a longer than usual wait due to the extra petition load this has generated. As before, please be patient and know that the GMs are on the case. It is also worth remembering that petitioning multiple times or filing one in the wrong category will slow the queues down as each has to be looked at individually.
Thank you!

This isn't meant rudely but we ALL KNOW the reimbursement queues are ridicously long enough as it is without all the extra petitions sent in the last hour have extra personnel been assigned cause normally it takes good 7-14days (if your lucky!!)....

I love how you guys always tell us exactly what happened (even though many people don't understand a thing you just said) because other games wouldn't tell us anything when they have problems. Keep up the good work!
To anyone quitting due to a little downtime: Good Riddance. We don't want or need impatient whiners here.

Hehe, I got home right after the server came back up so I missed all the problems. But if I had lost a few hundred mil, I would just petition it.
If someone quits over something like this, than they probably didn't really like EVE much and are one of those "I'm only playing EVE until something better comes along" people who were going to quit anyway.

You put the tempdb... in a sodastream?
SELECT * FROM tempdb WHERE sodastream = 1;
*cluster crash*

Hrmm,
I bought 30 cruisers and a wad of t1 stuff for them. Is it easy for you guys to reimburse or do ya need to trawl through wallet transactions?
I mean, crap.... the queue must be 20 thousand peeps long.
If its quicker you could always drop 250mil(ish) in my wallet :P Signature file size to big, please keep it under 24000 bytes. Please e-mail us at [email protected] with any questions - Petwraith |

No, this just happened because two bad things happened at once. When we add to the RAMSAN, we'll have a bigger buffer IF something like this happens again. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

Sorry Tas, got your pirate gate camping dealt with. I've bribed the Concord Officials (Heathrow Security) to flank Valar as he comes through the gate and warp to freedom. ------------- EVE-CCG Pre-orders EVE-Ink Tattoo Project |
