Umm, traditional trading without any capital is almost impossible, forget about that.
First of all, make sure you always insure your ships, at least while you're new. Don't fly something you can't afford to lose.
To fix your current situation though, I have 3 suggestions. a) Buy a cheaper ship (Condor) and outfit it, then do some level 1 missions for cash. Decline Worlds Collide if you get it, you'll need a merlin/kestrel to do that mission. b) Buy a bantam and go mine veldspar :) c) Some t1 items sell cheaper than the minerals they can be refined into, even with basic refining (80-85% return). Find them, buy those items, refine and sell minerals, and then with the extra cash buy more and repeat until you have enough. You can do that in a shuttle and you don't need any substantial capital.

Oh, and check out the ships and modules forum for good merlin setups. It's a very good frigate but a tracking mod and a heat sink aren't the best mods you can fit on it :p

Any amount of capital is enough to start growing your isk. Moving goods from where they're sold cheap to where they're bought for more is the least skill intensive way to make money in EVE. You won't make huge sums of ISK, but 15% profit is still more than you started with, and can be reinvested almost immediately.
Mineral trading is a good way to start because of the small cargo size, and relative stability of the prices.
15% of 75000 ISK is only 10k. So you're looking at making 10k per trade. At the same time you can do level 1 missions for 100k+ rewards much faster than you can find and fulfil those 10k profit trade routes. You can do 3 lvl1 missions in 30 minutes, and buy a new Merlin.

Yep level 1 courier missions will pay better than trade if you only have 75k. Still IMO it's easier to fit a Condor with some launchers and a basic shield tank, I believe it costs less than 40k, and do kill missions :)
