In regard to our solitary complaint as Arthur C Clarke said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." and perhaps what we see here in an artifact of some kind (tech four anyone ).
There again perhaps not, the title is after all "The Greatest Joke". It makes one think and that alone, for me, is reason enough to like it.
Now all we need is an applause smiley for the forums

Ok... what is this?
Are these short stories, designed to flesh out the game, give it background & lore? Which is cool, i can get into that.
Or are they more, are these linked to missions & complexes? << which would rock.

Edited by: Corey Grim on 24/10/2006 05:08:30 Edited by: Corey Grim on 24/10/2006 05:08:21 simple request if i may.
what i would really much like to read is how minmatar accompished their ship technology to so high level. i mean matari is most skill intensive and coz of that most versatile race when speaking purely about ships. only race that armor tanks shield tanks shoots missiles and uses guns etc etc. IF it has something to do with spying other races it would still leave us couple of questions, example where did the superiour speed and agility came from?
there is lot of questions unanswered about matar technology.
anyway if these questions have been answered in some short story/chronicle plz someone point me to right direction
thank you.

Edited by: Ralitge boyter on 24/10/2006 06:28:00 You guys are telling me we get to read more of this great stuff every week.
So a pirate faction story is comming up sometime... soon. Guess I would like to ask for something on the ORE corporation and their reasons for releasing the mining barges and their T2 counterparts to the capsuleer pilots.
Then there is the question of the jump clones and their effect on the mental state of the pilots that are using them. What we have seen so far is that these pilots are more reckless and quicker to attack and kill other pilots then the once that refrain from using these "ebil" things.
Oh, yes one last thing I would love to see is a big story about the history behind the various long gone cultures that we see artifacts apearing from on the capsuleer markets. How are the various factions dealing with this? And the impact on their believes and cultures, could it be that these cultures where in contact with the Jove or might they have evolved into Jove? How do the various factions look at this?
ps, wonderful story looking forward to see a lot more of them.

There's always been a mystical element in EVE, as seen most clearly by the Jove and their offshoot the Society of Conscious Thought. The Sisters, obviously, are going to lean somewhat to mysticism, just as any religious order does simply by virtue of being religious. Don't worry, though; we're still a SF game and I take that into account when writing stories.
Originally by: Derelyk Are these short stories, designed to flesh out the game, give it background & lore?
Precisely. The stories usually have some secondary purpose - to explain a new game mechanic, to cast light on a particular faction, etc. - but first and foremost, their purpose is to lend verisimilitude to the game. The upcoming batch of stories are all related to KaliOne features. This particular story may end up having a 'real-life' counterpart of sorts, once the exploration feature gets implemented...

I'm very interested in the clone concept. However, so are a lot of others; I've seen a bunch of clone scenes and clone-focused stories in EVE fiction (including a good one in a past E-ON issue). As a result, I'm a bit wary of writing about it, because I don't want to tread old ground, or end up nailing down into canon some concept that the players like exploring on their own.
That said, you touch on something that I'd actually had an idea for and completely forgotten about: Leaving aside any possible psychoses or issues resulting from a botched clone job, how will this kind of effective immortality affect a normal human being? You still age, but you've pretty much eliminated the possibility of fatal accidents. It can't be long before people find some way of turning it into a sport.

They are usually a bit of both. The City of God for instance is an actual place in eve, as is the Serpent's Coil. Others like Myth of a Salesman, Silphy and Malaetu Shakor provide an idea of the levels of dealings in eve. The Crystal Boulevard and Dam Torsad provide places that you can't go to (yet), ie on the ground. Then you have chronicles about the factions and their powerplays or governemtn dealings, wars, relitions, political divides and so on. So they are a jumble and all together make up the background of eve called Prime Fiction. ------

heh, sport... to quote Warren Ellis from his MEK graphic novel: you know what the driving force behind all new technology is? sex. and if its not sex, its drugs. a pod pilot can lay waste to his or her reproductive and inner organs and get replacements without much effort, as long as the only thing that counts, the nervous system, stays intact. i'm pretty sure the pirate factions and syndicate residents are well aware of this and the pleasure hubs outside concord controlled space will propably offer things a non-pod human could enjoy/endure maybe a dozen times at most.
MEK brings me to another interesting point, as it is about posthumanism and implants, and there is also at least one short story from a Shadowrun (Cyberpunk RPG by Fanpro) publication that details the dehumanizing effect of artificial eyes, both for the wearers and those that deal with them. so i've been wondering how implants are viewed in the general non-pod population. do "normal" people use augmentations for everyday purposes (communication, work, sex, whatever)? are obvious implants a common sight in the streets of say... Amarr Prime, or is this limited to taskforce military types and high ranking caldari (who seem to have a lot of metal in their faces)?
personally i like to think of my characters implant heavy clone as a worksuit he has to wear, to him all the metal and plastic is more of a burden. he knows hes one of a chosen few who can deal with the stress of a modified body and pod-stasis and all, so he does it out of a sense of duty, but in his free time he would jump to a "clean" clone to go planetside. hes an intaki treehugger anyways, so he doesnt count

FINALLY new chronicles. And on a regular schedule, too. Even if it was only sort of regular, I'd still love it. The one area where Eve needs most loving is not necessarily content as in game content, but plot. Prime fiction is the basis of plot, therefore prime fiction is good and important to have.

Unless you're Bob Flanagan, I somewhat doubt that genital destruction would ever turn into a recreational activity. Even if you can grown them back afterwards.
As for the implants, it depends. As far as I recall, there's nothing in canon that says they can't be of several different types, ranging from miniature ones that you'd hardly notice, up to these exoskeletal monstrosities. The Amarr upper class use them as jewellery, so they'd have more elaborate constructs, but I suspect other races would go for lighter and less obtrosive stuff. In fact, one of my upcoming stories - the one exerpted in the news piece - has a Caldari man who's given an implant against his will, and the only visible effect is a small scar.
Originally by: Kakita Jalaan I sure hope factional warfare will make an appearance in a near-future chronicle... and detail which factions are counted as factions, and which are not
Factional Warfare will definitely make an appearance. I intend to write at least two chronicles about it, and may do more if I have time and a surplus of ideas. Don't count on the chronicles for too many details on game mechanics, though. I'll do my best to make them correspond to the game proper, but they're intended first and foremost to give the world added depth, not to serve as infodumps. Look to the forum stickies, dev blogs and feature pages for more concrete information. If there's anything we feel that you need to know, believe me, it won't just be hidden in a chronicle.

Interesting story.
Somehow while reading I felt like I was listening to the guy in the Max Payne (c) game who tells the stories in between (and yes that's a damn compliment !).
Very nice
(only comment is that a hell of alot of sentences contain a he-does or a she-says and so. Seconded on "nice one", not seconded on the rest. I like the new approach on storytelling to be honest. Gives more of a new-agey feel to the far sci-fi future.
Its so Serenity-ish, and it wins so hard for not only being a great Chronicle, but for being different.

Realising that I didn't actually comment on the story in my previous post, I re-read it and have this to say:
1. There are clearly a lot of angles to flesh out in EVE, and the Sisters of EVE are definitely one of them. I'd like to hear more.
2. The man seems to me to be either Gallente or Caldari. The impersonalness around him suggests Caldari (the AI is a nice touch, and represents another angle that should be explored), but the pamphlets are more Gallente (I think). Because of several tiny flavour elements (the cafT, for one), I feel he's more Gallente. Am I right?
3. There's almost too much of a mystery here. Unless you write a follow-up, the balance between open-endedness and confusion is tilted too much towards the latter. It's a well-written piece, though. I just felt that it could have revealed a little more.
Oh, and re: previous post - please consider the bit about that space at the start of the paragraphs. They really are an eyesore. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."
