I was wondering if anyone could help me with this issue?
When I boot up my notebook (Dell XPS first gen) it runs fine no load no nothing on the CPU I'll then browse the web play eve etc. And within 1 hour Explore.exe starts consuming 50% of my CPU resource. It drives me nuts on 2 levels first it slows down EVE (right there enough to drive a man insane) and the cooling fans kick in (think homebuilt desktop only louder) This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. Is there anything I can do short of wiping the HD and reinstalling windows?

explorer.exe is the shell that runs the gui for windows, and a few other things...
How long has it been since the last install - if it is a while ago - not a bad idea to refresh it. You could back everything up and try a repair first though, see what that does.

The last install was when I got it about 2 years ago. Also forgive this noob question but when you re-install window's don't you also lose everything on the drive?

Well, you could repair Windows. I would suggest a Disk-Defragmentation before any ****-disking. Also, boot into safe mode (before de-fragging) and run the anti-#### programs.
Now, there is also another possible solution, but it requires a steep cliff and a good throwing arm. --- --- --- ---

Try this:
ctrl+shift+esc
Kill explorer.exe
ctrl+shift+esc again
New Task, locate explorer.exe to bring the shell back. See if its still taking 50% CPU.
Also think what was the last thing you installed BEFORE this started happening, and try removing that. Could be a program running in the background, taking idle CPU and then running another program. IE a port scan bot. Takes CPU your not using, runs its little program to generate port scans for its next infection.
I doubt its a virus, but try killing it then re-initializing.

Reinstalls does wipe the drive that windows is on which is why you will need to back up the data you need, either to another drive or DVD. windowsXP does a great program called : "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" which can be found off the start menu that can be used to build up a backup of most of your programs and setting. the same program can then be used to take the backup and put it all back in the same places.

Install that and you shouldn't need explorer.exe. Note that I haven't actually tried it myself, so I don't know if it's good or not etc.

Then why hell did you suggest it?
People gotta really take more ownership of their suggestions and we could less stupid posts like this.
On the OP:
Your problem sounds like the issue that SP2 originally had when it was released (although it began as soon as windows booted) it started hogging CPU. My best suggestion is for you to trawl through windows support libary and see if you can emerge something. Occasionally I personally find it useful (at least the online one, don't even bother with the help files) --------------

Others have said that it's good, but since peoples opinion on what's good and bad varies I think I shouldn't add any biased views without at least trying it myself first and see if I agree first or not.
Also, it would actually solve the problem. No need for explorer.exe means that explorer.exe won't use a bunch of resources. However, since it's a replacement that behaves differently, you may not like the change - or you might like it more, it's a matter of personal opinion.

Use the Blacklight rootkit detector and a virus scanner... that looks like a *very* standard Blaster-like worm.

hmm I am afraid there is not much you can do. It might be rusting kilobites for all I know.. so defrag, clean it all around (registry cleaner and all that).. bhaa I dont know how to keep Windows healty neither. I mean I just use it and it seam to deteriorate itself. Like a digital cancer of some sort. It is strange stuff to me since I am used to months of uptime without any slowdown whatsoever.

Not exactly. bb4win is BlackBox for Windows. Its a 'shell' replacement or better known as a 'Windows Manager'. It still use explorer.exe as the File Manager.. at least that is what It does in here. I love BB. Its a good change but dont put a technically challenged person in front of it or you will get to know how it feel to work in technical support... Welcome back to the 90s I stay there lol. The computer is very zippy now.
