Hello, recently I was missioning in hi-sec when out of nowhere a frigate appeared and started looting my kills. The pilot was promptly rewarded with the *suspect* status. From what I understand, I would be within my rights to fire upon this individual.
But I withheld any hostile action thinking there was probably more to this than met the eye.
If I'm not mistaken, this is called suspect baiting? And although I could fire upon the pilot, his allies could immediately descend on me? How exactly does this work? If he fired upon me first, would he be alone in the battle?
I'm not complaining, just looking for an explanation of the mechanics. Thank you! |

Was doing missions on an ALT for standings in high sec when such a fellow warped in, and did likewise. I was in the Mission with 2 BS so I microjumpdrived the one that had the aggro 100 k out and all the mercenarry rats aggressed him instantly and he died horribly in a fire.
I loled hard.

You should never engage a PVP ship in a ship that is not set up for PVP.
That being said, the first time I did it, I lost my ship but it was the most fun I had in the game up to that point.
The best way to learn is usually to make mistakes, just shoot him!

As said before he wants to bait you into a fight. A properly fitted frig is capable of tanking and killing a mission fit battleship, even more if accompanied by an offgrid booster alt. Also he may pretend to bail after your first shot (you have no point to hold him) and come back in a better ship to finish the fight as you both have a limited engagement timer for 5 minutes.
I'm my own NPC alt.

To add in, another tactic would be to bring in an Orca or Bowhead and drop off a larger ship with an alt.

Thanks for the answers! Especially the notion of not engaging a PVP fit ship with one that's fit for PVE.
(I did want to light the suspect up though!)

You might be right, but I was also looking for an 'icebreaker' to get myself involved with the Eve forums.

Asking for advice is always a good ice breaker
And despite the insistance of our salty friend up there, you came to the right place with your question. Not only are the crafty baxtards who do these kinds of things all too happy to tell how it works (never know, maybe you'll try it yourself), but anyone who uses the forum to look for targets will now have you pegged as someone who probably won't take the bait. Showing an ability to stay calm and willingness to learn makes you a hard mark.

Who doesn't fall flat on their face the first time they try to walk?
Tell you what, next time it happens light him up, fall flat on your face and die in a fire. Keep good notes on what your opponent does and what you did, make a full write up and post it here. Mail me the killmail and I will will reimburse you. FRAPS the fight for an extra bonus.
The next hint I will give you is that it is possible to quickly change from your PVE setup to a PVP setup, the key is to carry a mobile depot, this will allow you to change your fit within the mission space.

Feel free to light them up. You may actually win. Just keep in mind that they WILL be packing either a disruptor, or more commonly a warp scrambler. If you pull the trigger you are committed unless you can shut that down somehow. Odds are good though that they are relying on having a small signature and a high speed to tip the advantage in their favor when dealing with your mission ship's damage output. For more details on how this is done I suggest reading this: http://evedarklord.blogspot.com/2014/03/carebear-to-killer.html?view=sidebar
Plenty of info on how it's done there. Now, you try it!

@OP this is what was happening: http://evedarklord.blogspot.ca/2014/03/carebear-to-killer.html
This guide explains exactly what was being done to you, why, and how it works. I would suggest reading it if only to understand Crimewatch mechanics. That said, find a suspect baiter, fit up a disposable PVP ship and go have fun. PVP is the -best- part of this game, and if you are in a ship you can afford to lose, even losing can be fun. |

Confirming that void would have given me sooo much more range.
Yes, my killboard is failtastic, but it's mine and I love it. I'm sorry if that upsets you, but I have almost as much fun losing my failtard fits as I do blowing up other people's. Still, +1 for correct use of the word "noob".

OP, no, his corpmates cannot interfere. However be aware that even if you kill that Frig he will be back in a ship that is more than capable to kill you. And even if it were not he has no risk trying since mission-running ships do not fit a warp disruptor so he can always warp off.
In fact, in a case such as yours always assume your fit has been scanned beforehand and its strenghts and weaknesses (and monetary worth!) are known and will be countered. Every possible dice will be loaded against you.
