I think someone in a covert ops tried to give me a report on exactly what was on the other side of the gate but it all came across to me as, "Wow, this is a lot of red that you can shoot at. Hurry!" When I ordered the jump in, there wasn't much subtlety to it and we were greeted by a solid wall of red. It wasn't just the number of battleships, but the enemy fleet was also very support heavy. Regardless, lag was pretty manageable so I ordered the fleet to regroup and align then started calling targets.
Ten minutes later, thirteen enemy battleships were dead along with about fifty percent of the support. We'd lost two battleships and an interceptor. It had been a great fight, with ships on both sides warping in and out more than once and support ships zipping about and blowing up all over the place. Somehow, I'd managed to get through the entire battle without losing more than half my shields, much to the chagrin of everyone in gang.
After a quick hop down to G-7 to give the KIA guys a tour of the area, we came back to F4R, brought in a few Dreads and quickly pounded the four small POS into reinforced mode. To absolutely no one's surprise, each one had in excess of three days of strontium in them which meant that the earliest they would come out of reinforced would be the following Monday morning.
We ran regular patrols in the area, but aside from putting a large POS into reinforced on Saturday night the weekend passed without anymore large incidents. From our point of view, IAC was playing it smart and not committing any more large fleets until it really mattered. Everyone knew that the big show would happen Monday morning...
Monday, 16 October 2006
The morning began at about 0245 local time for me. Many had set their alarms for this one. As TS began to fill up, our turn out in Utopia was looking pretty promising. There were forty-five plus in gang and we had twelve MC dreads and four carriers ready to jump in when ready. Seeing as how all we had to do was knock down four small POS with no guns, we figured that one cycle of siege mode with support from the BS would be more than enough firepower. In light of this KIA and FIX kept their capital ships docked.
All seemed to be going well. We'd hoped that the odd morning hours would play a bit in our favor, but then our scouts started reporting in. Local in F4R was already approaching the 150 mark, with a large percentage of them being AXE. Word was that FIX was preparing to move up with a reinforcement fleet of up to thirty more battleships plus support but we had to go with what we had now before things got completely out of hand.
I moved forward with the fleet toward F4R flying my Caldari alt, Erilynn (not like this is a big secret after the tourney). Not surprisingly, we were shadowed by a covert ops all the way in. In stead of coming in through 1-P, we took the extra jump to jump in from VA-6. The fleet elements we already had inside F4R managed to pull the enemy fleet away over to the 1-P gate giving us about a 30 second window to get inside the system. Unfortunately, between the lag and a miscommunication everything went to hell pretty fast.
We jumped into F4R just as the enemy fleet's support ships arrived at the gate. Our ships already inside the system came in at long range and started to provide cover fire as we uncloaked and started trying to warp out. I watched a 'dictor bubble pop up right beside my Raven and punched the MWD to get clear while calling a pair of targets. A few seconds later, the rest of the enemy fleet arrived about 90 km away from me and...
I crashed to desktop. \o/

Previous War Stories:
The Final Battles of 9UY
The Invasion of G-7WUF
--------
The next couple days following the Invasion of G-7 were filled with activity. Despite not being able to hold the station, we'd done quite well tactically and were now faced with where we wanted to take the war next.
The construction of the new IAC outpost in F4R barely twenty-four hours before our invasion had really thrown a monkey wrench into our plans. It gave IAC a fall back position and rally point for friendly forces that proved pivotal. The intervention of AXE, more than anything else, was what helped turn the tide.
We were relaxed in the sense that taking the outposts was not central to our plans, but we did want to take another shot at it. However we were at a disadvantage logistically. Most of our fleet battleships were still based out of ISS Fabrica and ISS Condiso which meant a twenty jump journey to the battle area. We needed to get closer if we intended to extend the campaign much longer.
Many seemed to believe that we were done in the area, but on Wednesday 11th fourteen freighters under MC escort shifted our war hangars from the ISS stations to the new forward base in Utopia, just a few jumps from IAC's new outpost in F4R.
Freighters 1 Freighters 2 Freighters 3
The new target system had eleven moons, six of them occupied by large death start POS's. Our intention was to plant a few of our own POS in the system and see how things played out.
Unfortunately, we did not move fast enough and by the time we were set to move out on the 12th the five free moons each had a POS anchored on them. Four were small Amarr POS with no guns and the fifth was a half-completed large Amarr tower. No problem, we'll just adjust the plan a bit.
Of course, our arrival in Utopia did not go unnoticed.
Howdy Neighbors!
Early Thursday evening, IAC sent a medium-sized greeting force of mostly T1 cruisers and Interceptors to poke at us. We responded in true MC overkill style, which is to say we undocked several HAC's, Blasterthrons and a couple Carriers to deal with it.
By now the word was out and IAC was starting to mobilize. The first snipers started appearing in Litom and we spent a few minutes chasing them off, netting a few kills in the process while assembling a fleet to move down to F4R and pay IAC a return visit.
Earlier in the day we had gotten word that KIA would be joining the party on our side. We worked out our communication issues and then moved to assist them in getting set up in Utopia as well. We moved our fleet over to Doril to give KIA an additional escort to our new base. Here you can see KIAEddz flying his favorite ship in the universe.
By the time KIA got docked up, we got word that a nice-sized IAC fleet was sitting in F4R on the 1-P gate. In a burst of bravery / insanity, I decided to actually take out my long-neglected Megathron and see how long it would take me to lose her in a good fleet battle (with 2x 1600mm Rolled Tungstens, ofc). A few of the KIA guys were ready to roll as well, so we wasted no time in shooting down the pipe to engage the IAC fleet.

Epilogue
The map on the afternoon of the sixteenth told a pretty grim tale. We spent a good part of the day analyzing what we'd done wrong and how we wanted to approach the next phase of the campaign, should there be one. By Monday evening, we had left the events of the morning behind us and were already gearing up to get ready to go back in again. However, it was not to be.
I spoke with our client on Monday night, outlining our new plan and it was received very positively. I was promised a reply within twenty-four hours as to if we would be moving forward. I would not hear from the client again until this past Sunday, the 22nd. While MC and our allies spent the next few days running small raids into IAC space, our logistics continued to prepare for a follow-up attack we'd never have a chance to make.
Word went out to several third parties who'd expressed and interest in the situation, but most of them now had problems of their own.
With no paycheck and no reason to stick around, we packed up and left.
And thatà was that.
THE END

I gave the order on TS to get clear of the gate by any means only to be told about ten seconds later that the entire node had dropped. Well, so much for that. It was at this point that I realized I'd flown my alt into this mess while she was still wearing a full grade crystal set worth of implants so I wasn't too keen to log back in only to have her pod pop back up at a gate full of nasty red people trying to kill her. So, I logged back in with Sel in a Mega and we set about getting reorganized and pulling the fleet together in F4R again.
It was obvious that we needed to bolster our firepower in system and since the small POS we had to take down were not armed, I had all of our cap ship pilots switch over to battleships. The cap ship pilots formed up in Utopia and started the trip back down to F4R to link up with the fleet inside. Our jump in was a repeat of earlier, only this time the node didn't crash. We lost three battleships on the jump in, killed two enemy BS and a few support before everyone got away safe.
It was now about 0340 EVE time and local was now up to over 230 people, sixty of which were MC, FIX and KIA. FIX command relayed word that our reinforcements had run into problems on the way so we could expect no help from them any time soon. We had to work with what we had.
I put our covert ops pilots to work setting up warp in points around the first POS. There were four carriers there and a few Ospreys helping charge up its shields. After a few minutes, we got a good warp in on a pair of the IAC carriers and we went in. The first carrier I called primary managed to duck into the POS bubble just as its shields died. The second one made it to safety with structure damage just as the enemy fleet warped back in.
What followed in the next couple minutes would define the rest of the morning - while we had an equal number of BS to the enemy fleet, they had the support of at least four - six carriers and three times our support. Not only were we outnumbered but we'd come in too heavy. Over the next hour, we played it as safe as possible, warping in to hit the targets we could and warping away before the enemy support swarm got within range. We focused on the enemy support and scored several kills, but lost another pair of battleships in the process in exchange for three of the enemy's. Each time we warped in, we'd take a few extra seconds to fire several volleys into the POS shields, ruining the work being done by the IAC forces trying to heal them up.
At 0544 we staged our most successful run, killing off several support ships and an enemy battleship as their fleet warped back in. We got away unscathed. As local began to drop a bit, we got word that a few of the FIX pilots had managed to make it into ZXIC and were ready to warp to the F4R gate and jump in. Once we combined our fleets, chances were good that we'd be able to put together an attack that might break IAC's hold on at least one of the POS's long enough for us to destroy it.
Then, disaster struck...

Edited by: Seleene on 25/10/2006 15:47:07 We warped to the ZXIC gate at 160 km at 0554 EVE time. Most of the enemy fleet was still at the POS we'd just hit and the FIX forces jumped into a small group of support that we were supposed to be able to snipe at except... our screens were completely clear. It was one of the most bizarre graphics bugs I've ever seen. I was 165 km from the ZXIC gate and my overview was completely clear. The guys on the gate reported that a few enemy BS has warped in as well so we decided to do a warp to the gate at 40 km from our current position to help them get out.
The gang reversed direction and warped closer to the gate and still there was nothing on my overview, or anyone else's in my gang. Yet the FIX guys were insisting, "THEY ARE RIGHT THERE!!!" Well, I'm not sure where 'right there' was but then, less than thirty kilometers away from me, a solid wall of enemy battleships and support just appeared. They didn't warp in; they just showed up from nowhere.
What happened next doesn't even deserve the word 'battle'. It was a slaughter the likes of which I've been on the giving end of many times, but this time the tables were turned. We were completely out numbered, the enemy support was right on top of us and the chaos was simply unimaginable. To our credit, our TS stayed calm and disciplined, but Gang chat was a steady stream of "Down".
Even as everything in the world seemed to be exploding at once, I managed to marvel at how beautiful all of it was because, at the heart of it, this was what EVE was all about. For whatever reasons, we'd walked right into a meat grinder and it was payback time for all the hell we'd rained down the past week.
The few ships we did manage to target went down hard and fast but there was just too much enemy support jamming, scrambling and just plain bumping into us. I have no idea I made it out of there, but I did (with 10% armor). The FIX FC, Admentus Cor'vion, did not and the highlight of the morning had to be his flaming pod sitting in the middle of that hell and him still calmly calling targets right up until he woke up in a new clone.
I don't know how many battleships on both sides went down in that fight; it didn't really matter. The heart had just been cut out of our formation. In five minutes, MC alone had lost ten battleships and our Vulture command ship. Over the next hour, we lost five more battleships in hit and run attacks against the next POS. We didn't have to; we just didn't want to give in.
Finally, I made the call:

This is what happened to us in TOXIN when we went up to shoot the Razor egg a few months back... and happened when I was in FIX fighting in FAT vs the CODA a few times.
You warp to a gate (or whatever) and there's nothing there... and suddenly you start taking damage, and then the entire enemy fleet looks like it just spawns in front of you if you're lucky... when we went up to shoot the Razor egg we never even saw them, we just saw our shields, armor and structure melt inexplicably --------------

The main pity from my point of view was that the CVA didn't get more action on the Monday. We were all set to defend one of the gates against an incoming numerically superior FIX fleet - then node crash happened...
The rest of the evening was spent as backup - but by the time we arrived MC/KIA/FIX had already departed.
Good write up Seleene!

I completely agree. Nice reading. Especially the little fancyful details.
Incidentally, for that weekend when we were in war with the MC I did something similar for our internal boards, to give the few of us who couldn't share pod time with us an idea what was going on (and hopefully sharpen awareness and lure some back into their ships!).
It's all past now, so little point in repeating it here, but for the next war I'll see what our diplomats will let me do. --

QFT. From my position on the gate, I saw 1 hostile battleship. Warped out to a can near the thing, and just as I drop out of warp, your entire fleet just pops up right next to him. The strangest thing was, I started scrambling an apoc while orbiting at about 15-17, and then suddenly everyone just dissapears and I lose lock
10 Seconds later, the entire fleet appears again and the apoc is gone
Apart from that and the node crash though, it was a great evening - that attack and the one which occurred at the POS where we warped in around 50km away were the most memorable skirmishes

For whatever its worth, I've been seeing an increasing number of instances of that "insta-appear" thing for both friendlies and enemies, even when other folks are seeing them just fine. It almost seems like the server isn't updating your client properly. I haven't bothered reporting it because the standard reply is "its your fault, buy a new computer". Whatever.

Iwas in that botched battle. what happened is we warped in at 160km, and were off grid from the gate somehow (!). we warped to gate at 100 to provide support, but the enemy fleet, which we could not see, had also warped in at 100 from another angel. we landed about 20-30km from them and it quickly went downhill from there, being so severely outnumbered by BS and support.

Anticlimactic endings, ftl, but it's definitely not your fault, Sel . No money, no shooty.
Good fight to IAC. The description of that fleet battle we took a beating on was pretty accurate from my standpoint. It's a bit of a shame we didn't get to keep playing, as I had a new Megat ready to roll . This is the toughest fight I have personally seen an alliance put up for their home. Granted, I was no in MC for the Big Blue contract, so you'll have to ask some veterans about that one.
You'll find they will pretty much say the same thing happened on the Oijanen gate in BWF. It's kind of funny watching drones attack thin air, and explosions where there are no ships... till it's your ship Such is EvE.
Good read as always

Awesome write up.
A few things From IAC's view.
In the beginning of the Fight there were 100 IAC, 60 AXE, and 40-50 ish CVA. 20 IAC pilots were dedicated to maintaining the POS's and they did an awesome job that night.
While CVA stayed on the ZXIC gate to stop the FIX backup fleet from arriving, My IAC gang formed up at snipe spots on the 1p- gate. Our scout network soon began reporting on the MC movement from Utopia and kept eyes on them while they tried to make their way through KOCN and VA6. This, however, gave us more then enough time setup on the Va6 gate in F4, with the AXE gang waiting for my command to warp in as soon as the MC began jumping, and they didn't have to wait long.
But the node utterly failed us.
As soon as the first MC started jumping in from Va6, FIX forces began to jump in from ZXIC. What should have been an epic battle spread across 2 gates simultanously, involving 250 people, turned into me clicking on "INVITE" more times then i care to think about.
After this one hiccup in the server though, everything seemed to run smoothly, I don't even rember their being any module lag (except for the messsed up grids of course), But the damage, in my mind, was done. The MC and Fix forces had been allowed to gain entry into our system, where they would be a mobile sniper force, very hard to counter.
The first "real" battle after this was at the first pos about to come out of reinforced. IAC pilots in the gang reported the MC fleet to be 100 above the POS, sniping away happily. I warped my gang into the pos , and told the tacklers to strap on the helmats and shout "leeeerrroy" into the night. I believe 1 or 2 MC BS succumbed AXE tacklers in this attack, with a few losses to our support fleets.
and then the grids decided to go AWOL.
A Few of my tacklers had reported engageing and scraming an Apoc 100km off the Va6 gate. I gave the order for my Fleet of 70ish (this was after AXE had left, aparantly they have this thing called a "life" so they don't play at the un-godly hour that it was :P) to start aligning for the gate, I also gave the order for everyone to load short range ammo. I could literally hear people grinning...
I warped us to the gate at 100 and was like "WTF there is No one here..." and then it happened. The MC appeared outa nowhere.
My overview lit up red, and all of the distances on my overview read less than 40km. The Antimatter in my guns couldn't shoot fast enough :D.
And then it happened again... everyone vansihed.. i was sitting there in space with about 7-10 blues around me thinking i either need to lay-off the 20 year old twinkies, or i need to get some more sleep...
Aparently the grid had just shat itself and i could no longer call targets. But the backup FC did a hell of fine job, and most of the MC forces were killed.
A few skirmishes happened after this, but that was the main fight, and indeed, the turning point of the War for F4( oo catchy :D)
I have always held the greatest respect for the MC, and the fights of that morning have only hieghtend my respect for them and their abiblity to bring the best day in and day out.
But i also learned that I fly with an amazing group of people, The IAC pilots who showed up that night were mostly fighting in their first Large scale fleet fight. And all of them did an awesome job of listening to orders and doing everything they could to stop the invaders.
Also i can't say enough about CVA and AXE, you guys were there when we needed you the most, and don't doubt for an instant that we won't be there for you. Go MAZ your a crazy SOB. :P
Even though the fight took place from 11pm to 5 am EST, i still had the most fun ive ever had in EvE and i know for a fact that every IAC pilot who fouhgt in F4 had a blast.
don't be too ruff on me this is my first "war story" and me and my spell check button don't get along to well.
hope you enjoyed seeing the fight from both sides

Awesome write up. It sure would be nice to have a whole forum devoted to combat reporting. (hint)
I remember jumping in from VA-6 with the gang. I started targeting the called primary and secondary, and punched the ab as soon as I heard "dictor!" on TS. Just about then, I was hit by a massive wall of lag--which likely coincided with the rest of the hostile fleet jumping in at range. I could see a Rook hanging there about 30km from me, (I can't remember the pilot's name, but omg, it was so tantalizing), and then my overview started its telltale christmas-tree flash of me being called target.
I was clear of the bubble by then and we had gotten the call to bug out and regroup, so I repeatedly began hitting warp, with no real idea if I was getting a response. Finally, the fog began to clear.
The last thing I saw was my fleet tempest warping out at 2% structure(!) and then...node crash. I logged back in to a shiny new pod.
Totally messed up. I'd do it again in a second. --------------

Awesome story and it was also very unbiased. Props for including the loss on your part i know most people would like to gloss over their losses but you guys didn't. Fantastic opponents sums you up. A+ writeup.
You guys were always curtious in local too which was nice. Granted the 2 bship 2 carriers on our 4 man gang wasn't fun that one time lol, but understandable as us running around scrambling the dreads from jumping out was probably annoying.

Well worth the wait! A really good "summary" of the final push (before the final push that didnt happen).
Awesome!
Cheers, Lowa

This was a good read as always.
I had fun that day, got a few kills had some laughs and didn't get killed . Props to you guys for keeping on coming while heavily outnumbered Though it was kinda late for everyone, especially for the euro's (like me).
