Status: unknown, people are telling you the server is down. its not, something is wrong between eve, your firewall and the internet.
Its taken me 10 hours to work it out but i think i have the answer!
Your firewall allows your eve client to access the internet so you can connect to the servers. if you install 2 copies of eve they will need to be named differently. because the firewall will only allow one version of the programme to access the internet. it cannot distinguish between different builds running on the same time. if you try to access the internet with a new version, your firewall asks you to update, you click yes. your firewall thinks the test version is the original, just updated.
so now my problem is, you cannot rename the eve.exe file without getting an error. i petitioned asking for help. i got the predictable response that they do not offer support with the test server.
It looks like my test client, even when running the same build as my original cannot access the internet at all. as far as i can tell theres nothing i can do.
so if anyone has any suggestions that will help, please feel free to post. i was debating test patching my original, then reinstalling another copy to replace it, meaning i could connect to the test server, just not to TQ. That would make it CCP's business to help me. but that is a last resort, which i am sure at least one person will try.
Other info: I am running: windows XP pro, Ntl netguard security.

The issue is server side.
Nothing is blocked at my end, full stop.
I get "status unknown" message at various times. ____________________ MOGarmy

it also happens when it is offline, and because it is a test server it is offline a lot, if it is happening ALL the time, above fix might work... __________________________________________________ This shall be the one thread, the one thread to rule them all, and in the Spamness bind them. - Ductoris |

Update:
I first disabled my firewall, altho it looks like when u click disable or whatever the firewall goes offline, it dosent, you need to reeboot. then you need to install an alternative firewall that can recognize 2 builds of the same program. I recommend ZoneAlarm.
If you get status:unknown all the time, it is your firewall or another issue with your comp.
If you get Status unknown on and off it means the server is going up and down for maintanance.
Please, dont reply saying the server is down if you get status: unknown, because altho it is true, this thread was created to assist me and others when they get the unknown status all the time.

1.) Firewalls use fully qualified executable name (drive:/folders/name) to track access rights.
2.) Every decent one allows you to set access on per folder basis so updating client won't trigger FW block/confirmation.
If yours for some strange reason doesn't do at least 1.), replace it.

Should use versioning information, size and possibly a checksum with name to verify the application.

Status Unknown - mweans the server is down see also Eve Offline or the topic in the eve-chaos channel Windows Firewall is not the best - I don't have eve listed in my exceptions and that works fine. but you can manually add it [and it does rememebr the location from where it is run]
I don't use zone alarm - I have a proper firewall on another mahcine see IPCop for good free one if you have a spare old machine.
Sisi Goes up and down like the proverbial .. if you get lucky you will get on. Sisi access is not a right it is a privilege - They update it to test versions a lot - and then roll it back ...

Did anyone else read this with dismay and think "WTF?".
Dude, the server is down.
Even the most pants of firewalls will not stop 2 eve's running just because they have the same exe name.
Stop trying to fix something that isn't broken, the server goes down at random intervals and isn't up like TQ all the time. If CCP think "right gonna patch it or take it offline" then they will.
I suggest you get someone else to try connecting to it, if they can and you can't then maybe it is a problem your end but personally i reckon the problem is somewhere between the keyboard and the chair.

er, excuse me. read my last post:
Quote: Please, dont reply saying the server is down if you get status: unknown, because altho it is true, this thread was created to assist me and others when they get the unknown status all the time.
the problem does exist, and did exist for me, i have since solved it. for those of you who are too short sighted to see that different combinations of software can have different affects on each other i am gonna say: PLEASE CLOSE YOUR ASS!
For those of you who do have it working, try to connect to tranquility with your test clients, you will see: status: incompatible (release) which means u cannot connect to the server as you have the wrong patch. if however your client is screwed, try to access the TQ server with ur test client, if it says 'status: unknown' for TQ instead of 'status: incompatible (release) you have a good reason that warrants u reading this thread.
so for all you dumb ass f####rs out there who read the thread title and nothing more. Just leave it to people who can and do read to look at and reply to this post.
For all u lot who think the 'status: unknown' means the server is down. you are right. BUT if by you the server hasnt been up since it went down for kali to be installed you have a problem with your firewall and or client side.
Evidence for this is: 1 - both versions of eve ran fine before the patch, why? because TQ and SISI were running the same version anyway. your system would have no problem with it.
2 - as soon as patch was installed i couldnt connect to either server with my test client, and yes i tried to connect to TQ, no success, then patched and tried for SISI. Again it did not work.
3 - after playing with firewalls i can connect to both servers. i am making the rigs for my rokh so i can play with fitting.

Edited by: Thunderbird Anthares on 28/10/2006 17:29:44 well, thats all nice my test client can connect to TQ but not to SISI,i get "unknown" there and thats like 3 days in a row,im depressed
edit: ZoneAlarm tracks full path so it considers my TQ and SISI builds a different program, therefor allows for separate settings ------------------------------------------------ When you get to the end of your journey, everything that really matters is the journey itself. |

A way to test it is if you can see the tranquility server and get the message Status: incompatible (release) Then your eve client is connecting and its just the test server that is offline, hence Status: Unknown

Altho that test is a sensible one and should work most of the time, i just thought i would mention on occasion i have had "Status: Unknown" and still been able to log in.
I know there is nothing wrong with the firewall on the router, and i dont get status unknown all the time.
Personnaly i just try loggin in and if it fails i take it the server is down, as i have connected befor and no settings have changed on the firewall.
