I wanted to get peoples take on the old learning skills that were around when eve first started during the exodus times. skills that increased the speed of training and skills that added attribute points. They certainly helped new players with learning skills quicker and in the long run it could shave days off of the final training time. Should those be put back in the game? arguments for? against? just trying to start a discussion. |

instead of learning skills these days we just have more attribute points. also we now have the ability to remap to focus on a skill group for a long period.
tbh I don't care too much either way, as I pretty much have more SP than I know what to do with, but for the most part I think the answer of "hell naw" is applicable.

Learning skills had the effect that some people actually maximized them first before they started to do some actuall skill training. Which means you had to wait for three months or so before you could actually start with useful skills.
And even if you did not maximize this skills, you had to sink some time into them for optimal training.
Actually the points from the skills are now permanent on every char, newbros included, so the new players where the big winners of this change.
I am glad they are gone, which actually allowed me to create this char without much of a headache.

The learning skills removal was probably the best update since I started playing. I spent 5 or 6 weeks at the very beginning training the first tier skills up to 5 and the second tier to 4. No newbie should have to do that. Now CCP needs to remove attributes from the entire game.

I never once thought to myself that learning skills were bad as everyone made it out to be. Despite popular opinion, they were fair. If you chose to forego the training skills, such as your CEO, you would fall behind in SP. This created more diversity in general because it was up to the individual to decide where their account time should be focused into. Fact of the matter is, the change didn't make things fair. It made things better for those who chose not to train them for maximum efficiency. Such as your CEO. People like you, were worse off, comparatively, when these changes went into effect. Me personally, I didn't start training for said skills until I was a year old and I was able to do things other than fly a reaper. At the end of the day, those whining about it, from my perspective, were losers who couldn't be assed to make a sacrifice.
People love to say things like "Takes three months before I play the game", but the reality of the situation was completely untrue. They could have easily did what I did and still have fun and be successful without the learning skills. Instead, people thought it was unfair for whatever arbitrary reasons they may have had. It was their choice to spend all their scarce account time to train learning skills and then log off. They could have done alternative things, but they didn't. Instead of letting it fix itself, CCP caved to popular forum opinion. just as they did to titan nerfs and many other things. Everything the loud minority complained about, was usually another individual/group of people's hard work. To achieve, what people considered fair, was at the expense of others. No one ever really talks about that though. No one talks about how so and so made good choices that helped him get ahead in Eve.
But this shouldn't be too surprising in a video game. This sort of drivel goes on in the real world where real human lives suffer unnecessarily because of laws or rules passed to make things fair for one group of people at the expense of others instead of letting the free market do its thing. Nationality, race, religion, or any other label isn't excluded. Humans are all alike in this regard. It's why title, prestige, other social functions that put others on a pedestal have no meaning to me. Once one understand the true psychology of humans and how economics work, it's very easy to see where things are going to head before it happens despite popular opinion or criticisms. By all rights, you should have pulled ahead of your CEO and been a good example in using your scarce account time as an investment for yourself.
While yes, by design, it does seem pointless, that is something that should have been thought of before such a feature was ever implemented. But by removing them at a later date, you essentially punish those that had invested into it. Refunding skill points for said skills is worthless in the long run because every individual that had trained for the skills would have gotten a much larger return for their investment in the first place.
Anyway, I believe they shouldn't bring them back as it's too late and everybody as already adjusted to it. People need to learn to calm and control themselves and realize that things are not as bad as they think. I believe the direction Eve is heading into is far more dangerous for both CCP and the player base. I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but I started playing eve because of "harsh" it could be. Overtime, through various changes imposed by CCP, I have lost a lot of love for this game. I still have quite a bit thought because there have been changes that I consider good. But, If I had to quantify it I'd say I'm in the negative.
Regardless, a tl;dr: No, but not for the mundane reasons the majority of people have. |

You have simply confused the learning skills with the mechanic that replaced them GÇö the latter did actually help new players and shaved off days worth of training time.
The learning skills were a hideous, idiotic, pointless, and in every way retarded meta-mechanic that had no relevant connection to any part of the game, and were allowed to fester far too many years after the devs had correctly identified the fundamental design error behind them (which they did pretty much immedeately). They served no useful purpose whatsoever for anyone, and their removal was GÇö by far GÇö the best thing that has ever happened to the game.

All non-specialist skills are bad.
Fitting skills? They're just as bad because the meta list goes backwards to hurt new players and reward veterans with the ability to more easily fit oversize modules.
The skill trees should be about getting people to dabble in professions and choose specialities.
That's it. The idea that they keep players around or coming back on the basis of the sunk-cost fallacy is an illusion. If players have fewer other players to encounter, it simply increases the likelihood that they will get bored of the game and leave. |

They should but not exactly the same way.
You would have to pick one learning skill in combat, one in industry, one in leadership, one in corporation management and uhhh what else is there, trade? Oh and science.
Then you could pick one sub skill in each, +5 attribute bonus/ level when learning a specific skill related to each field, so for example if you picked small blasters, you would have a bonus to learning the small blaster skills.
Think of these as talent skills, everyone gets to be good at training one thing really well. |

ISK and SP are the only two haviest drugs which are moving this game further. All newbies are in blind desire of millions of isk and millions of skill points. That's why they want it asap. Learning skills were kind of tidi factor fore most of the new arrivals (alts not contented) cause you had some free time untill you could move further with next level of learning. So people spent sometime on learning the abc's about game, environment and content. That was good. No we have those training going way faster especially for focused alts when uou could simply inject +4 imps and add cerebral accelerators. That's why we have SB profession easily achievable nowadays or either fw alts seeded by masses. There are many other examples. But bringing those back has no point now cause we all accepted those changes and i couldn't say that current system is bad. |

While the removal of learning skills hasn't cost us anything (in fact we gained a point IIRC) and it has certainly done what was intended in removing the need for new players to choose between learning learning skills and playing the game...
I have noted that many of the comments in favour since their disappearance have flet something like this:
Ima Wreckyou wrote:I am glad they are gone, which actually allowed me to create this char without much of a headache.
ie: existing players building alts more quickly... Malcanis' Law again...
I wonder if perhaps, before the removal, the time spent training Learning skills (and therefore having poor skills in all other regards) gave new players an excuse while they learned to play the game. Presuming that the new players were out playing the game while the alts were mostly station spinning the training time would only be wasted for the older players...
Of course the primary reason Learning Skills were a problem was that they were perceived as a problem - I wonder how many new players ever actually worried about them without being told to (I stuck learning skills in here and there for most of my first six months (I guess)) and how much of an issue they would have been had the skill queue existed (Learning skills were one of my early "about to log, need a longer skill" skills). |

ie: existing players building alts more quickly... Malcanis' Law again... Not really. If anything, it's quite the opposite: at the time, people were trying to claim that keeping the skills would be good for new players (when the ones they benefitted the most were old players)GǪ somehow.
Older and richer player did gain any kind of overwhelming advantage from the removal of the skills GÇö they just got the same benefit as anyone else. That alone rather disqualifies the Law from applying. For once, new players were actually among those who benefitted the most. People creating alts were never particularly bothered with the 3-month startup time or the three-year ROI timeframe, since they could just keep playing on their existing characters, whereas new players had to play with the stunted builds that the Learning Skills created. With the skills removed, the old players got rid of something that didn't bother them to begin with, and new players no longer had to suffer being stunted.
Quote:I wonder if perhaps, before the removal, the time spent training Learning skills (and therefore having poor skills in all other regards) gave new players an excuse while they learned to play the game. Presuming that the new players were out playing the game while the alts were mostly station spinning the training time would only be wasted for the older players. No. Because that's not what happened, nor would it had worked as an excuse even if it did. What happened was that new players either had to fly with subpar skills, even months after having started, and be frustrated or they had to not fly at all for months and be frustrated. Either way, they didn't really learn to play the game GÇö they only learned to meticulously plan an idiotic meta-game called EVEMon. That, or they just left outright because they couldn't help noticing what a braindead idea it was.
Quote:Of course the primary reason Learning Skills were a problem was that they were perceived as a problem No. They were a problem because they made the NPE awful in every way. They were a pointless meta-mechanic with no impact whatsoever on actual gameplay (which is why they didn't help with learning in any way), and thus had no reason whatsoever to even exist. They served no sane or sensible purpose GÇö they were just a morton's fork where the player picked between being delayed in a big lump or in lots of small lumps. That is pretty much the very definition of a hugely problematic game mechanic: something that makes no difference on the gameplay, and only affects the person outside of the game. They were removed because they had no place in the game and because the game was instantly made vastly better for everyone the second they were gone.

So it was a good change and it actually helped new players.

I well remember the rage from many of the forum regulars (some whom have posted in this very thread) because they might possibly lose a few days a year in skill training from CCP dumping training skills.
I may just go dig up some of the exceptionally funny quotes if I get bored enough today and post them for our enjoyment.

Absolutely no point. When they removed the learning skills from the game, they also adjusted training times so that every player trained every skill at the same rate they would have if they had the learning skills all trained to 5. We definitely got the better deal when they were removed. |

At some point i thought they could be returned back to the game as collectable items but without any kind of usage. |
