While this is a suggestion, I feel it fits better in Ships & Mods as this thread is about an issue in EVE.
My main character is Caldari, I use missiles. And I'm not happy about it.
Missiles are boring. All I have to do to delier damage is to get in range and activate my highslots. After flying frigates and destroyers of the other three races in the last month, I've been wondering, how comes others have it so much better?
For instance, when flying around in my MWD AC Catalyst (used ACs to save grid and get me a tank), I had to monitor my speed, cap, and tranvestal speed to make sure I was hitting my enemy for top DPS while not putting myself in the line of fire or running out of cap to keep on fighting. This was definately more fun then gazing at pretty explosions (which is only enjoyable for the first 10 minutes or so).
While Caldari also get rails, and matar also get missiles, it's certain that missiles and caldari go together. That is why, as a Caldari player, I wish missiles required more interaction to use.
Ok screw the long preview, here's my idea: Make missiles fly into enemy ships and then, instead of hit them, begin orbiting them until their flight time is over. Make it so that if there's at least one missile launcher online on a ship, there will be a tab under the overview similar to the drone tab, where all missiles that are in space will show ordered from top to bottom by distance to their target. The missile user will have to click each missile window in order for the missile to detonate and inflict damage.
The damage will not be AoE, but each missile will use its velocity for two things, the current use, and a new use which will be similar to turret accuracy falloff in the way that missile detonation will deal damage to target ranging from 100% to 0% based on the distance of the missile from its target, when distance<=velocity=100% and distance>=2*velocity=0%.
Don't be confused by the word 'similar', I believe weapon systems should be different from each other, not just a clone of each other with different name and graphics. With this mechanic, it won't be as easy to hit targets with missiles at their full range, since the time you'll have to click the missile to detonate will be very small. You also won't be able to spamclick, as that will result in damages smaller then 100%.
Looking at it now, this will make missile quite similar to turrets, since basically they'll hit less at higher ranges and more at shorter ranges... however the way of using them will be different, so, I'd like to hear opinions on this, should missiles, in your opinion, receive a nerf - that doesn't make them weaker - but rather makes them harder to use, and stops people from afking thru level 4 missions?

this has nothing to do with your idea, cause I aint gonna touch that with a dirty amarr ship.
but I do agree on missles being boring to use, I started caldari and ended up switching over to minmatarr because speed and guns are so much more fun to fly, maybe less effective maybe not but still more fun

Since when does a weapon have to be exciting to use. I don't care if I have to click F1 while patting my head, if the target explodes as wanted then thats cool with me.

I never said it does tiller :p I was just saying for my personal preference missles were too boring to use so I started using other things, although in all honesty I had no idea they were boring until I tried a turret ship,
lets just say the first time I took an armageddon out against angel rats(that are damn hard to kill with lasers and low skillpoints) I was freaking amazed at the challenge and how the lvl of fun went up but I am not saying to nerf missles or change em neccesarily, just saying imho I would enjoy the missle side of the game more if there was more to do with em

Well first off you talk about how you want to "simulate" falloff, but yet don't want them to be the same.
Then you talk about how difficult it is to use guns because you have to monitor your speed and cap, because this is something no missile user have to do
"oh, but I have to monitor my transversal speed and distance"!!!one!!eleven!!!111!
well so do every missile user, except they have to monitor overall velocity and not just transversal velocity.
Now you just need to introduce 300% wrecking hit for missiles also

I suggested that mechanic so that spamclicking won't be a way of using missiles.

I never said using turrets was hard. Selecting a target and clicking 'Orbit', then turning my MWD on and off from time to time is not a big deal, however, it certainly is more interactive then clicking F1 F2 F3 F4 F5 F6 and going to post on the forums.

Monitoring overall velocity on missiles is basically doing velocity*speed in your calculator and turning your mods on when the number you got is bigger then the range between you and your target, and turning them off if the opposite.

So when using your artillery when sniping or shooting longrange you do not just press F1 F2 F3 F4 F5 F6?? or more like "look an inty coming at me!!" F1 F2 F3 F4 "POP".. next F1 F2 F3 "POP"... yeah, can see ALL the fun in that, that's really alot more fun, and ohh the brain power needed is immense.
And I'm not talking about MISSILE velocity, I'm talking about the targets velocity.. the velocity of yout target has a severe impact on the damage you'll deal from a missile. As long as the target is coming at you with a very low transversal velocity, a gun will do 100% damage. That's why turret users look at transversal velocity, and missile users look at overall velocity.
I have no idea about what you mean about "spamclicking"

You're missing my point, I'm saying missiles need more interactivity in them, not that all weapon systems are FPS-like. Drones and sniping needs to be fixed too. So do BMs and lag, and Amarr ( :P ) and Target Painters, but lets talk about one problem at a time shall we?
If you don't like my idea that's fine, but you still didn't answer my question, would you like it if missiles had more interactivity in them? And is so, suggest your own idea. Don't just tell me that missiles do less damage to faster targets, I read the missile guide, I've been flying Ravens and Caracals for a fair amount of time, that's no news to me or anyone else for that matter.

Ok it's time to have fun at your expense.
When I fire my missiles I want them to fire out all at once and then time freezes right before they hit the target. A window will pop up on my screen and my targets screen. This window with contain a game of Tetris! My target and I will both have to battle each other in Tetris. If I win, my missiles hit him. I I lose, my missiles will miss him.

Well both turret users and missile users "DO" stuff, you just want missile users to do alot more stuff than needed. And keeping track of 50 missiles while doing the same as a turret users does, like monitoring cap, shield, armor, speed and so on seems very unneeded if you ask me.
I would compare it to ask a turret users so type in the exact distance to a target to set the right trajectory for his guns and ammo. seems unneeded to me too.

The problem isn't that people don't want missile to be more interactive, it's that it's just a bad idea.
For one, having to manually click for each missile to explode is silly. 99% of the time, you just want the damn missile to explode as soon as it reaches the target. Also, this would allow missile ships insane alpha strikes, imagine a torp raven launching 6 volleys of torps, then having them all hit simultaneously. Would break any tank. Also, imagine the cries of pain from rocket kestrel, and soon heavy assault missile users as they contract carpal tunnel syndrome from clicking way too much.
Second, that formula you posted is redundant - we already have a mechanism that does the exact same thing, explosion velocity.

Missiles do not need to be like turrets. cookie-cutters and all mods being similiar is BORING. Missiles are good atm, they're easier to use, but are inferior DPS compared to other weapon types, and flight time can be a killer for you.

Trying to be constructive...
I agree that missiles are somewhat boring, and I do wish there was more depth to using them. OTOH, I think a lot of players who use them like them precisely because they are simple. I don't like your solution, as it feels less like tactics and more like forcing people to jump through an extra hoop. It's kind of gimmicky.
The thing I'd love to see would be a fairly short minimum range below which some sort of tracking or additional damage reduction would come into play. That doesn't exactly address what you're talking about though, since it would only affect missile users in some situations.
* * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

QFT
the problem with the idea for change is that it is very gimmicky, your coming from the right place OP but somewhere along the way you jumped out of the plane, landed in a river and floated out to the ocean.....
there are alot of smaller things you could do, like have transversal affect missle velocity or say lower the explosiong radius on all missles and then have a variable on how much inside the signature of the ship the explosiong went off, whatever these arent real suggestions, just saying there are alot of ways more in tune with the game to accomplish having more fun with missles
notice I did not say nerf, just said have more fun(couldnt care less if they improve or nerf overall effectiveness, I just wanna have fun at the game I play)

You could always get some made by the European Space Agency, that way half of them would detonate inside your ship, the rest would either make target then fail to actualy do anything but send low grade images back as a kind of taunt or land on the hull and sit there until you send another barrage over to find out why the first lot did sod all.

More things in space to track for the server = bad for the lag.
More clicks to do = bad for the hands.
And I fail to see how it could be more fun to click repeatedly at the top/bottom of another window in the overview just to make some damage ...
All that from a PvE point of view, but in PvP it would be even worse ...

OMFG!
You've got to be kidding! Orbit the target until the flight time is over?!?!?!?!?
Check the flight time on a decently skilled pilot's cruise missiles. Mine is 28 seconds. Yeah, I want to fire missiles at a dominix 10 KM from me, and wait 28 seconds for them to hit, while I'm chewed to bits by the Ogre II's! Sounds like my idea of a 200,000,000 isk fun evening!
Not to mention that SMARTBOMBS KILL MISSILES! It's damn near impossible to get a smartbomb to hit an incoming missile.... unless it's orbiting you for a HALF MINUTE!
I mean, i've seen some people complain about nerfing and whatever... but this takes the freaking cake.

Rofl. I don't exactly agree with the OPs idea, either. But... reading comprehension anyone? You didn't even read the damn OP post properly. OP is suggesting that missiles orbit the target until either their flight time runs out, or you REMOTE DETONATE them. Actually, that'd allow insane alphas, as you can fire like four volleys of your cruises around that enemy domi, then detonate them all at once.
Now for the OP. I agree that missiles are rather boring, but I don't think that your idea would help. Clicking into the same window over and over again is not my definition of 'more interesting'. Especially as it offers ZERO tangible benefits besides the ludicrously overpowered alpha strike, which'd need to get nerfed badly. (Or alternatively will have everyone and his mother fitting smartbombs to prevent the missiles building up.) It'd prolly also negatively affect server performance.
Missiles aren't exactly interesting to use, but this ain't the solution to fix em. ________ Capitalization is the difference between "I helped my uncle Jack off his horse." and "I helped my uncle jack off his horse."

Explain the super interactive guns to me? Watching for this range and transvers-amachingy.
C'mon, in PvP as a missle user I watch range and transversal just as much as a gun user except from a defensive prespective. As a gun user you are watching it from a offensive prespective. Point is: If you are not aware of it you are dumb and dead.
Yes missle usage in PvE, where I know for a fact I am going to tank the damage of the NPC ships, is boring. But on that note, NPC killing with guns is just as boring and un-interactive.
