I have a friend recently get his Hulk, 500 million ISK and very happy. Also very careful.
We decided today to enter an 0.4 system normally very peaceful, I was on guard with my domnix and I had friends next door in case trouble came.
3 BCs warp in and all charged assault the Hulk and destoryed it. There was not even time to request a ransom.
Now my friend is 1 hulk poorer and really upset about it. We would have paid 100 million just to be left alone and move out of system. As you guys know how "wonderful" insurance on the hulk is.
So the question here is should a pirate ransom or just blow every ship up? Seems like such a bad business decision. -----------

you can blame the people who do the follwing for this type of event:
1) people who will flame and insult someone who asks for a ransom 2) people who use ransom talks as a delyay to get reinforcments in 3) the sheer amount of people who go around advicing people not to pay ransoms. 4) the amount of peole who will rather die than pay a ransom
all of the above and more im sure make it a waste of time for most pirates (and bear in mind what makes you think they were pirates? they could of been gankers), especialy on a ship like a hulk wehre there is a chance of getting DCSM 2

It's entirely the individual's choice.
If they want to ransom, they ransom. If they want to cut the ship from under you and loot the wreckage, then it's their choice.
You best bet when someone hostile gets into local is to be somewhere else if you have no intention of fighting.

They don't have to ransom if they don't want to. Considering that the Hulk had friends nearby they might of not had time to ransom or may have got blown up while trying to ransom. If you want to guard from people in lowsec I suggest you take a Scorpion aswell as your Dominix so you can ECM any pirates that may enter local and try to rush the Hulk. Ofcourse always stay aligned for station and if any pirates do enter local get your Mining Barges safe.

having had done a similar thing my self with my previous chr..
Your friend in the next system, was he watching the only gate into the system?
did you guys not safe spot as soon as they appeared in local?
if he was watching the only gate in why didnt he mention 3 ships of war were a comming?
as i said. in a previous chrs life I could not resist popping a hulk all on my lonesome. including his mate ina covie and they had no protection.
my advice is. be more aware in futre.

I don't think pirates will do what they think is in their best interests. With a Dominix standing right there and high sec just a jump away (where reinforcements could and were waiting) it makes perfect sense to explode and run. Like someone said, if the hulk had been alone it very well may have been ransomed.
If I may so bold as suggest the following. Mine in low sec with a regular barge for a while until your comfortable that you've got your "Oh MY GOD RUN AWAY" tactics perfected.
Cheaper, and less frustrating then learning at half a billion a pop.

I forgot to mention the reason why we got jumped partly was that they were of postive standing, and after reflection, it would be better to gank and run.

If your going to attempt to ask your average low sec carebear for a ransom, you had better be sure you have a V-chip installed on your convo window.
I've heard people say a lot of things that simply frighten me in this game.
Calling someone an e-murderer, a virtual rapist, claiming that someone must be a real life rapist, that they need to be locked in an asylum or executed in real life because they are degenerate scum. It isn't called for, it is way poor sportsmanship, but I hear it thrown around way too much.
If you've ever watch the TS Rumble video, it really does an amazing job at pointing out some of the levels of insane rage that people that play this game go to.
I can see how it is simply so much easier to just blow them up and pod them instead of putting up with the drama.

As high as you think they are willing to pay to avoid the boring tasks of buying a new ship and finding new modules. It could take hours, and isnt fun. I havent pirated people in a while now, but when I did, almost everybody payed pretty good money to be left alone.

Ransoms are very much pirates-choice. Most decent pirates do, as they know they can make a steadier buck. They were probably scared off of ransoming by the Domi, seeing as its more than capable of taking out a BC if they're unlucky.
Like a guy above said though, they might have just wanted a Hulk kill for their killboards. I hope not, thats a pretty childish way to pirate. Real pirates have a bussiness plan -----------------------------------------------

I don't much care for pirates myself... in fact our alliance is doing it's best to clean up a system we're in right now. That said:
Mining Barge (especially the hulk) is potentially wortha LOT more than 100mil ISK... hell it's potentially worth more than 500m ISK depending on the cargo and fittings. I can understand why the pirates popped it. That's one heck of a payday for them.
However, you could have easily avoided the situation by keeping the hulk aligned. Also a good idea to mine AWAY from the warp-in point. Fields are big... no way if you move to the edge while mining that you'll get jumped that quickly. Even moving just 40k from the warp-in location will give you more than enough time to get to warp before an enemy can finish warp, head your way, and land a scrambler on you.

The thing is as soon as u saw them u no doubt called for backup from the next system so when u choose to ransom u take a big risk and it has to be dam quick. Also remember that just because they blew up ur hulk doesn't mean they are pirates as such. They might just enjoy blowing stuff up which in my book doesn't make them a pirate. I rarely ransom myself because tbh i really don't need the isk and only ever ransom when they ask me 2 because they're skint or if it's a faction ship or something. i once found a lone hulk which i ransomed because he begged me 2 and my mercy crept in and he was alone in system.
Generally they might hav just prefered the pretty killmail to a pitiful 33mil each.

when we warped in the hulk was 4500 metres away from us and top of the overview, thus it got warp scrambled first while we tried to figure out if the dominix was mining or not, dominix started spitting drones at us so all bets were off.

I gave up expecting logical decisions from players sometime ago. Recently I got killed and podded in 0.0, not complaining as it was my failt for taking a risk. I had collected a pile of unsaleable junk ratting and needed to haul it somewhere for reprocessing, so I filled up a Sigil, fitted a couple of stabs, nano, minimal tank and tried a quick run to a station with reprocessing. Unfortunately at the one gate I did not have an insta for I ran into trouble. A player with positive sec from a neutral alliance not known for piracy and in an area at least 10 jumps from there claimed territory, flying a Hugnnin. So I took the chance and ran for the gate.
Anyway he killed me, which although annoying I can understand as the loot might be worth something (it wasnt really but he couldnt have known that). Podding me earned him a killmail it is true but frankly he might have gotten a ransom out of it had he asked. Not much as that body had no real implants but he might have done.
All he has achieved to to ensure that I will kill and pod him or his alliance mates when I come across them, and I do see them in this section of space, often alone and quite vulnerable as it is fairly uncontested and peaceful. Had he at least attempted a ransom I would not feel so strongly about it.
