My signature has been removed twice, the first time it was too big and I discovered that after it was removed. I was told the max limit for sigs is 22k, my sig was 21.36k, and it was removed. Even stranger I was told it must be under 24k bytes... I'm not very good with images and all, but last time I checked 24K > 21.36k.... Whats going on? ...although you probably could've just done a barrel roll. Signature removed - Please resize your signature graphic to be smaller than 24,000 bytes in filesize - Jacques([email protected]) |

Regarding signatures :
Signature graphics are permitted, but must follow these guidelines: Signature graphics that may only contain your character name, corporation logo, corporation or personal slogan or other text that is directly related to your in-game persona, or content directly related to EVE Online. All content must be in good taste.
The size limits for signature graphics are as follows:
* Maximum height: 120 pixels * Maximum width: 400 pixels * Maximum file size: 24,000 bytes (not kbytes)
I think your signature was just too big in pixel size

The limit is 400x120, not 120x400. And if your sig was 120x300, then it was outside the height limit.

THat signature is against the rules since it is above the 24,000 bytes filesize limit. I see your sig at 32,684 bytes.

oh damn.. photoshop was lying to me
anyway.. i'm curious.. what exactly is the REASON for the 24000 bytes limit? i could understand it if you were uploading your sig to the server.. but.. you're not.. so.. ?? __ Nope, still over the 24,000 byte limit. -ReverendM [email protected])

Well, think of it this way...
Person A has a sig that's ... 100kb large...
This may be fine for person A and maybe even others... but there's bound to be others with a worse connection that said image will slow down their speed of opening the page.
Now, imagine a full page of posts, not sure on the posts per page amount... but I'll use 20 as an example... now think of if everyone had a sig of the same size.
With a 100kb sig, that comes out at roughly 2 megs, nothing much for broadband but can give a dial up user some hassle for a bit, trust me...
Now let's go with 24... 480 kb, that's about, 1/4th the strain, much more freindly.
Now, this mgiht not seem bad for one page, but how would you like it if everyone had 100kb sig and caused so mcuh slow down you chased away the people... not including whine threads, ofcourse.

Just as Acinonyx Jubatus said, it mainly has to do with some users still using dial up. We want the forums to load as fast as possible, so we decided to restrict the size of sig files. As for the pixel width, thats just so they don't stretch the forums.

Isn't that why there's a disable sigs option in the forum settings? I'd be interested to know how many players are still on dialup theses days?

Disable sigs option works very well, I can still see your signature with the option checked. :)
EVE is rated to be playable over dialup connection. (A 56k or better Internet connection), thus it might be nice to enjoy there forums as well.

It has nothing to do with screen width of 400, but the thread text area minimum width is 400(+ borders). Thus, a signature wider that 400 messes up the right-side info bar. -- V.H. |

Edited by: DefJam101 on 30/10/2006 19:34:42 Ok how exactly can I tell how big my signature filesize is? I made it in photoshop, saved it as a JPEG. It SAID 21.36kb, I RClick/Properties it, it SAID 2136** bytes. There is no way it was bigger than that, why is the filesize so big, other people have signatures much bigger and of much bigger quality than mine, how are they keeping the fielsize so small, which isn't an actual question since apparently my signature told me the wrong filesize, I kinda want an answer as to why my file is so huge...
EDIT: photoshop lied to me, actual filesize was aroudn 29kb, and it still looked like crap. How do people have these detailed signatures? If MINE was 29kb there is NO WAY any of these can be smaller than that, let alone under max. I don't get it, am I doing soemthing wrong in the filesaving process? ...although you probably could've just done a barrel roll. If you use photoshop, best thing to do is to 'save for web' You egt a control panel showing the max quality image and the quality you will save it at and move a slider to reduce quality. Reduced quality means smaller file size. The file size is displayed on the bottom bar. (At least in v7 that I have, not sure about new versions) So fine tune it to be just within the rules.
Also, the Save for Web feature compresses an image much better than the standard save option so you can me totally sure of it. ------

Try the Save for web anyway on the original full quality file. You would find it might not reduce the visual quality as much for lower file size compared to a normal save. Though that depends entirely on the original image too. If that is already compressed or not too good to begin with then it will only reduce further and that can't be helped. ------

Whenever I make a sig, I use said Save For Web option. It's very good at compressing the files, meaning I rarely have to sacrifice and noticable quality in order to get it into a filesize limit.

I use Paint Shop Pro instead of Photoshop and there you have a small slider when you save compressed images so you can get just the right amount of compression to stay under the file limit.

Simple.
In Photoshop:
File - Save For Web -> JPG -> Quality: High - 50
Should be 18,000 to 20,000 bytes.
