Hello Tomorrow we will live an EVEless day. Could it be a good opportunity to watch an EVEish film? I mean, a film which evoques perfectly the atmosphere and overall spirit of EVE. Or even better, a film that in fact COULD be in the EVE universe :)
My humble proposal: - Blade Runner - Alien (the overall "space feeling" is close to EVE imo, not the alien, lol)

I keep wishing I could put a cyno field in a planet's upper atmosphere, jump a dread in and let it freefall, for some reason. That was just too cool.
Bladerunner was also a great movie, I prefer the director's cut, but I wouldn't call it eve-like.
I'd have to vote for Star Wars IV-VI.
Although there's a lot to be said about Wing Commander. None of it good, of course, but a lot to be said, nonetheless.

For a good representation of Alliance recruiting practices and fleet combat doctrine, I would recommend Gallipoli.
And, of course, there's always The Straight Story, David Lynch's film adaptation of the Innominate Nightmare saga.

Edited by: Ixianus on 01/11/2006 06:04:10 Firefly, for a thousand different reasons. Saying that firefly is cowboys in space is rather ignoring the entire scope and purpose of the show. The meshing of cultures, crappy outlands, etc, the episode with the assassin on the ship, its all very Eve-ish.
[Remembering in Eve the vast majority of famous historical and literary figures that pertain to space flight and the like would undoubtedly be non-pod pilots, seeing as pods are a rather recent device.]

I know I'm going to get slated for this but I there is one scene in Independance Day (just the one though) which is very similar to Eve. It's just as the alien fighter with Earth's 'heroes' enters the mothership.
The structures and lighting of the internal structure of that ship reminded me very much of a Gallente station. So much so that I wonder if it is really just coincidence. - No-one provokes me with impunity.

I think the Romulans would be more likened to Jove, after all the Romulans closed their borders and were not heard from for 30+ years, and they are more advanced the vulcans.

You have GOT to be kidding.
The Dune mini-series is like some kind of high school play of the real thing. Despite the fact that the Lynch version contains errors, it captures the epic feel of the novels. And it contains real actors.
The girl who played young Alia in the mini-series is it's only redeeming thing about the entire series. Everything else about it makes me want to vomit. (I still cant scrub the image of the campy rhyming Baron Harkonnen out of my mind...oh the horror....)
The only thing worse than that mini-series were those abominations that Brian Herbert published after his father died. I am still bracing myself for DUNE-themed transformers.

I think Serenity is closer than you might think. Take a look at the ship....Moa anyone? The whole deadspace bit with the fleets jumping in on top of each other was very blobtastic. Anyway, I move on, yes, Space above and beyond had the whole clone underlying theme. Star Trek has the faction element, Star Wars was way too ground based to be applicable.

Battlestar Galatica is a good show but the only time you see decent space battles seems to be season beginnings or season finales. People will chose it as default since its the only current sci-fi thing going.

What? Immortel was the last word from the devs on what movie inspired them or they thought most EVElike.
Wing Commander is a crap movie, still the combat scenes there and the usage of torpedos not to mention the jumpqueue with kilrathi ships getting wasted one at a time jumping in a long stream is very much EVE.
People thinking themselves lameass Billy The Kids in space explains a good deal. Now if there only were vampires you could all be Space Buffy!

Granted the nasty ugly movie-rapiers looked kinda minmatar-rific, unlike the awesome original rapier design... but man... that movie was *almost* as bad as Battlefield Earth.
I cried when I saw the big stupid ruber Kilrathi outfits.
And while Serentiy is cowboys in space yes, it also reminded the most of eve out of any spacey-type movies I could think of. A lone ship flying around doing its own business against a bigger backdrop of goings-on in the universe. Pretty EVE-like imo.
Maybe Battle Beyond the Stars a little bit too... sorta like a bunch of corps getting together to gang up on an alliance or something :P
And Ice Pirates yeah... I know eve has Space Herpes, and you can catch them from Wierd Beard.

Wouldn't really say it's EVE-like or anything, but a great movie anyway, I have it on DVD
Hard to say what I'd think is EVE-like... but perhaps Farscape comes closest from series. After all there's the "evolved humans far away from home" thing, where they don't even know their origins. Firefly does have some similarities in the feel of it, but otherwise the world itself is not really alike. BSG is awesomeness, but also a bit too low-tech for EVE, and doesn't have enough racial variety for EVE-ish feel.
Oh well, all good stuff regardless, so doesn't matter if they're alike with something or not

The Dune mini series and children of Dune, yes. But not that convoluted travesty given to us by David lynch.
The Dune miniseries was a far greater travesty than the glory that is Lynch; however, I assume they fired everyone in the higher echelons of production, because CoD was as near perfect as one could expect a translation of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune to film could be.
Still not getting the beardless Stilgar or lack of stillsuits, but meh. :p
At any rate, yes, Dune. I'm waiting for our giant sandworm God Emperor to be released with Kali. Then we can laugh at the Gallente and their silly 'president'.

Wing Commander, definately.
I ran across it on cable the other night, and though it's a crappier movie than I would usually watch, it was Eve, right down to the unstable worm-hole that they took to get where they were going. Since it was a 1999 movie, I wonder if it was actually one of the inspirations for the game.

Doubt that, but it was a pretty good movie for the budget it had. Nowadays you can get more bang for the buck with CG than back then (Battlestar Galactica, anyone?). It was cool seeing Wing Commander on the big screen, even with the utterly horrid compositing.
For example, watch the battleship destruction scene, with the point blank torpedo hits. The explosions show off some really disgusting compositing work. Still a pretty cool scene though, and sounded awesome in the theater.

Wow, really? How so? I don't remember much ship-to-ship combat in either one of those movies. Wing Commander was really really similar though. The tactics, the weaponry, fighting in astroid belts, whole nine.

Wing Commander is a great example how a poor director can ruin a film that has great premise. Back then, Wing commander was still a pretty good franchise and Chris Roberts had made a name for himself with the games, but unfortunately he can't direct a film to save his life. Wing Commander had good sets and CG effects, was bsed on a rich background story and had some very talented actors in it. No, not Freddie Prinz Jr. It also features one of my all-time favorite film scores. The overture and theme for the opening credits are simply stunning.

Not so much the ship to ship combat, but the look of the ships and the ambiance of the movie.

Talking about Rid****? I totally agree. Loved how the drop ships could fold up and form faces, and bow. That was a nice touch.
Plus, those massive cannons they have... god.

Roberts CAN actually direct pretty well, but I think a lot of his creative decisions were overridden by the studio. I remember reading about the readouts in the*****pits and on the bridges of the capships and how the studios dumbed them down -- Roberts had these awesomely complex UIs designed for everything. Studio thought it was too much for the casual audience to take in.
Yes, that would make sense.
I remember getting a feeling when first seeing the movie that the kilrathi were supposed to have been faceless enemies never actually seen on screen in the manner of germans and japanese in some old war movies, but Roberts was forced to make them "visible" in the film.
This might have also been written about somewhere, but I can'r remember the source, if any.
